PAGE EIGHT THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 1948 MARKS A powerful drama, made to order for those 'who appreciate the ironies of warfare, is the Repiiblic picture, "I Jane Doe," starring Ruth Hussey, John Car- roll and Vera Ralston, which opens at the Marks Theatre next Monday. Based on a poignant Faith Baldwin magazine story, it is a timely depiction of an ill- starred love affair which begins in the Nazi-occupied French country-side and reaches its tragic aftermath in peace- time New York City. otal Love Story is concerned with a Ppt one which is absorbingly ." It deals with a pathetic young of a one-sided love affair who is the shadow of Sing Sing's elec- tric chair because she once trusted Steve Curtis. Handsome and debonair, Curtis is an American flier who bigam- ously marries janeve, Dubois in spite of CLA nd a lovely wife back home. When Annette learns this, months af- ter her "marriage," her reaction is to kill -- and she murders Steve in his apartment. Trio Stars In Drama An intensely dramatic court trial fol- lows at which Curtis' widow, a lawyer by profession, takes a startling stand. The two women in Curtis' life face each other in front of the judge and jury to,give their testimony. The court scenes are among the best ever filmed -- and are fraught with human inter- est. Ruth Hussey, in her first movie ap- pearance since her long and successful run on the Union," plays th John Carroll is seen while Vera Ralston portrays Annette DuBois, his unworldly victim. The trio of stars are supported by a large cast headed by John Howard, Gene Lockhart, Benay Venuta and Roger n. John H. Auer directed and pro- red the picture. The added attraction is "King of the expose of the Gamblers", a sports world. REGENT WALTER | PIDGEON, EON, DEBORAH KERR TOP DISTINGUISHED he WINTER COMES" CAST For acting at its very best, you will have to turn to "If Winter Comes," M-G-M's richly effective adaptation of A. 8. M. Hutchinson's novel of a man whose code of hormior forces him to take the blame for 'gnctheér man's misconduct--even thougl. + means vilification at the hands cf his wife, employer and neighbors. Four of the year's outstanding per- formances are compressed in this grip- ping picture, which opens its initial engagement on Monday at the Regent Theatre. Deborah Kerr, the English actress who swept Into overnight American popularity as the result of her work opposite Clark Gable in "The Hucksters," has an even meatier role as the woman whose fine sensibilities prevent her from renouncing an anti- pathenc hasband for an idealistic Valier Pidgeon as the writer, caught up in a web of incriminating circum- stances when he befriends Effie Bright, a young girl who has gotten herself into trouble, turns in the most force- ful and compelling dramatic charac- terization of his entire career, while Angela Lansbury, as his petty, jealous ana misunderstanding wife, "adds an- other brilliant portrait to her gallery of "heavles." Last, but far from least, is the work of Janet Leigh, who with but one pre- vious picture to her credit--"The Ro- mance of Rosy Ridge"--brings to the role of the 1ll- fated Effie Bright a com- assion and tenderness that ls nothing ess than remarkable in a player of so limited experience. These are the principals who tie up the threads of a story of English vil- lage life, the story of a man whose Jiveral ideals fortify him when he is led to the stake of malicious gossip his false accusation and who in the end finds his vindication in the heart of the woman who has always res- ected and loved him. It is a narra- ive permeated with LEE, sus- ense and drama and one that keeps Foe spectator fascinated from begin- ning to end. Among those who can take bows for one of the more worthwhile of Holly- wood's offerings are the picture's splendid supporting including Binnie Barnes, Dame May Whitty, Reginald Owen, John Abbott, Rhys Williams and Hugh French, and Vic- tor Saville, who has given "If Winter Comes" thoughtful and persuasive direction. It is a mature and stirring motion picture.
