TUESDAY, JULY 27, 1948 Engineers Repair One-handed Clock In Ancient Church . Coningsby, Lincolnshire, Eng- land--(CP) -- Modern engineering skill, often has unusual applicat- ions. A first-class example of this is the restoration of the ancient one-handed clock in the tower of the church of St. Michae: and All Angels here. Said by many to have the larg- est dial in all England, the clock's face is 16 feet six inches in dia- meter, and has only the hour hand to 'tell the time. Clocks with only one hand were in general use bee fore the middle of the 17th cen- tury, but with the introduction of the minute hand most were con- verted. The Coningsby clock is one of the most. outstanding of those which escaped conversion. The length of the hour hand is such that the time can be told to the nearest five minutes without diffi- culty. The main framework of the clock is of oak beams. The original wheels and pinions were of wrought iron with hand-cut teeth. In some cases the divisions had been wrong- ly made, and later corrected. PACE THIRTEEN THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE many years the clock became so worn that no amount of local re- pairing was effective. 'After it had been disused for some time it was proposed to scrap it and replace it with a modern clock. There was a good deal of local opposition to this suggestion, and in the end a Not- tingham firm agreed to recondition the mechanism. Every worn tooth in the wheels was built up by welding and re- shaped by hand, and only one wheel had to be replaced. In many. places welding was used to build up worn parts. Since the clock was repaired it has varied only a few sersnde a week from radio time sig- nals.
