MONDAY, JULY 3; 1948 tudy Methods To Combat Reds Canterbury, Kent, England, July (CP)--The Lambeth Conference bt 339 Anglican bishops from every corner of the globe, including 23 from Oanada, gets down to work dar. the bish thering at . Some e ops ga this I in the series of Lambeth meetings--the first in 18 years--have suffered first-hand &xperience of religious persecution, unknown in Britain since the 17th century. . Deliberations will be in Camera. Not until the conference ends, a fortnight from now, will a commun- igue be published detailing the re- commendations which the bishops will make to the various autonomous branches of the Church. .~It.4s. apparent, however, that the onférence will give much of its at- ention to the problem of combat- Communist doctrines. } e Times said Saturday that dis- cussion would be carried on with #realism and a sense of urgency im- arted by the fact.that some of the church's) branches are in Russian- dominated areas." ¢ The paper added that "it will be fs uncompromising as that already iven by Rome need not be doubted. fo the Anglican mind Communism is to be fought not as 'a political goctrine, but as religious heresy." In the church unity debates, close scrutiny will be made of the terms of last autumn's establishment of the Church of South India, This khurch is outside the Anglican com- munioh;' although formed by union of four hitherto Anglican dioceses with various non-episcopal bodies in Southern India. | In the discussion of the church in he modern world, the bishops are nderstood to be prepared to consi- er various forms of "contemporary idolatry" including "idolatry of tate." : ! This was referred to from the pul- pit of St. Paul's Cathedral during Sunday Communion service by Dr. fienry Sherrill, presiding bishop of otestant Episcopal Church in the nited States. \ Dr. Sherrill sald: "The sin of modern nationalism is that the na- tion is made an end in itself and as p result it has become a religion." Syndicate The Saving Habit By JOSEPH LISTER RUTLEDGE As individuals we know quite . well that there is a point of spend- ing beyond which we may not go, and remain solvent. There are many things we would like to have and do, and most of them are ad- mirable. But they all cost money we quickly realize that we have to forgo some that we may realize the others. That seems a simple and reasonable practice that all might follow, even governments THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE strangely enough, when elected to office, become unlike ourselves in private life. We lose these restraints when money ceases to be a personal thing, of which we control only a modest sum, and be- comes a budget surplus that burns our fingers until it is spent. But people, whether as individu- als or governments, have obliga- tions to meet. In neither case we would want to avoid or scamp them. We want to be very sure that as we ourselves would con- sider this a check on any reckless idea of spending, that we, as gov- about it. We want government to ernment, should feel the same way recognize, as much as we it ourselves, perhaps even more, that we can't have all--even of the very good things--and that to try, with this spectre of debt behind us, is to do so to our own grave economic hurt. We individuals are now paying about 29 cents out of every dollar we earn, in taxes. That is a pretty large slice out of our income. We had hoped that this year it might have been less, so that we might invest some of our own dollars in --but, our own security, Of course we rather like all the talk about it being wiser and safer course to liquidate our debts. That seemed to be in line with our own private economic theories of buying only FINE WATCH REPAIRING Our Specialty FELT BROS. Established 1886 12 SIMCOE ST. But, when 'We came to look at it the actual debt reduction seemed a lot less than expected. That's what wor- ries us. If we were certain our money was being used to-repay our obligations) we would feel that, in a way, we were protecting our future by saving. But, every time that there is a sizable surplus of money that would make quite a dint in that debt, we. hear another beautiful scheme costing in the millions and involving the administrative ef- fort of thousands of new workers, who will thereafter cease to be productive workers. Our old habit of thought returns to us. We won- der if we are not trying to get more of our wants satisfied, all at once, than we ¢an afford. Person- ally, we can't do it all. Isn't it possible that governments can't either? READY MIXED CONCRETE Crushed and washed sand and gravel for pavements, driveways, oundations or any concrete work.
