(¢c) No welding, brazing, or solder- ing of any type is allowed on any part of the car, even if done by the boy himself, except as pertains to axle rods or steering parts. Ready-Made Parts (a) Running gear '(wheels, tires, bearings, axle rods) and the steer- ing wheel and steering shaft are the only parts that may be used in ready-made form. (b) Steering system--Automobile or other ready-made steering wheels and steering shafts may be used, but/ no automobile parts are per- mitted in the construction of the remainder of the steering system, (c) Springing system -- Second- hand automobile spring leaves may be used in the springing system, or suspension, of the car. Spring leaves may be taken to a workshop for cutting, shaping, tapering, tempering, trimming, punching or drilling. (d) Coil springs may be used, front and/or rear, in the springing system. (e) Hardware (such as pulleys, turnbuckles, hinges, door springs, metal cleats, nails, screws, and bolts) may be used freely in the construction of both chassis and y. Wheels, Axles, Bearings (a) Wheel size--No car may have wheels more than 12 inches in dia- meter, including the tires, (b) Tires of solid rubber must be used. (c) All cars must run on four wheels, like an automobile. %e (d) Wheels and axles may ob- tained from coaster wagons, tri- cycles, baby carriages, and other small vehicles in popular use, or official wheel sets may be pur- chased. (e) Axle rods may be taken to a workshop to be brought to proper length (by removing or adding stock in the middle of the rod) and rejoined in a straight line by weld- ing, or to be threaded, but no other alterations or machine work in the approved wheel assembly is per- mitted. V-axles are barred. ~ (f) Axles turning on bearings are prohibited. Special Bearings, etc. Cars having precision bearings or special bearings, and cars having specially machined wheel hubs or axle rods, will be barred from com- petition. Car Measurements (a) Width of wheels--not less than 30 inches and not more than 36 inches. (Measured from centre line of one tire to centre line of other tire on the same axle.) (b) Width of car--shall not ex- ceed 42 inches. (c) Wheelbase--not less than 40 inches (meas red from hubcap to hubcap). (d) Length of car--shall not ex- ceed 80 inches, (e) Height of car--overall height not over 28 inches. (f) Road clearance--at least 3 inches below lowest point with driver in car, Weight (a) The car itself shall weigh not more than 150 pounds. (b) Car and driver--The com- bined weight of the car and the driver in any class must not be more than 250 pounds. (c) Added weight--The addition of material (such as bricks, lead, iron, cement, water, and wood) or any object which is not necessary in the construction of the car and is used primarily to increase car weight, is not permitted. Use of added weight-material will disqual- ify the car. Chassis Frame The frame of thec hassis must be made of wood of any thickness, and may be reinforced wilh metal braces or diagonal struts only at the corners. This is not intended, however, to prohibit 'the use of metal braces, T-braces, or L-braces, for holding wood frame members together. Metal braces mu:t not be more than 3 inch thick or 132 inches wide. Body Construction (a) The entire body must be constructed by the boy who drives; Bodies fazhioned | the car. Note: from airplane gas tanks, water tanks, or similar units are not per- mitted. (b) The "nose" must be the fore- most part of the car; that is, the nose must extend farther forward than any part of the front wheels. (¢) The. body must not confine the driver's head, and it must be wide enough to permit the driver to have free use of his hands. The body must be so built as to permit easy inspection of all parts of the car. The seat back must be hinged or removable. (d) The cockpit of the car must be large enough to permit the driver to get in or out without re- moving the steering 'wheel and without removing or opening .a section of the body. (e) Cockpits must be open at the top. No enclosures or partial en- closures will be permitted. (f) No car shall have more than seven bulk-heads. (8) Body covering -- Tin, sheet metal, aluminum, aluminum foil, fabric, wood, leather, paper, fiber wallboard, papler-mache, plywood, linoleum, wire, or cardboard may pe vsed as body covering. Do not use metal lath in body construction. Plaster or concrete is not permitted SATURDAY, JUNE 26, in the construction of the body shell or body covering. There must be no exposed rough or sharp edges. Metal braces used in body con- struction "must not be more than % inch thick or 1%; inches wide. (h) Windshields of any kind are not permitted in the 1948 car. Transparent material cannot be used in body construction. Steering (a) Safety--The utmost care must be taken in designing and install- ing the steering system to insure easy, positive control and safe operation. (b) Steering position -- The body and seat must be so built that the driver sits in a normal driving position (as in an automobile), per- mitting easy operation of steering and brakes and a clear view to the front and both sides. The driver may lean forward in his seat dur- ing the race, but a reclining posi- tion (leaning back) is prohibited, (c) Steering must be by hand, above the knees, (d) The steering control must operate the front axle (on a king- pin) or the front wheels (as on an automobile). (Rear-end steering is not permitted.) The kingpin shall not be less than 3% inch in dia- meter. (e) If the car is steered by swinging the front axle, axle move- ment must be limited so that the front wheels can turn not more than 2 inches either way. (f) Steering devices are: Wheel, | half-wheel and airplane-type | wheel. If a steering bar is used, | it must be at least 18 inches m= and used in conjunction with a steering wheel. All steering 1.... be with a steering wheel operated | with both hands and above the knees. (g) Steering wheel--The steering wheel must be above the level of the driver's legs when the driver is in position. There must be a clearance of at least 2 inches be- tween the rim of the steering de- vice and any part of the car. Steer- ing wheels cannot be less than 6 inches in diameter. (h) Steering cables -- Steering may be by flexible connections, which must be of woven wire cable. car, showing the purchase price of each item. Driver (a) Entrants must drive their own cars in authorized races. No car shall carry more than one bo Race Procedure (a) Heats--All races will be r on a system of elimination by heats. (b) Starting -- (By gravity or ramp). (c) Heats will be started by the foremost part, or "nose" of the car, The car whose nose is first over the finish line will be the winner. Officials (a) The: decision of local race officials regarding the interpreta=- tion of these rules will be final (b) Officials will disqualify - any car which, in their opinion, may prove dangerous to the driver, other drivers, or spectators. (c) Officials will disqualify any car which, in their opinion, was not built by the boy Who entered it in the race. Steering connections of rope, chain, or clothesline cable are barred. Brakes (a) Single drag brake required-- Every car must be equipped with a single drag brake capable of stop- ping the car safely in a straight line. No other type of brake is permitted. The brake facing shall not be more than 18 inches from the extreme rear of the car and must be in the exact centre of the width of the car. (b) Operation--The brake must be operated by a foot-pedal, Hand brakes are not permitted. (c) Brake facing -- Drag brakes must be faced with a piece of tire tread with a contact area of at least 9 square inches, to give a good grip when applied. Facing must be bolted to brake shoe. Attachments (a) All attachments, such as dec- orations, pennants, or ornaments, must be securely fastened to the car. (b) Glass is not permitted any- where on the car. (c) Starting devices -- No car may have any device that can in any way aid in the starting of the car, Cost Limit (a) Total cost--No car may cost more than $6.00 over and above the cost of the wheels, axles, and steering device.
