At 27, Sinclair 1s Canada's out- standing radio playwright. In fact, with several awards from United States . institutions connected with the radio arts, this ex-lecturer in pure mathematics has achieved a degree of fame throughout the con- tinent. "A Play On Words and Other Radio Plays," (Dent) by Lister Sin- clair' was published recently, The volume includes 12 plays which were written between 1944 and 1946 and have all been produced by. the Canadian Broadcasting Corpora- tion. The title plece of "A Play On Words" won first award at the 1945 CKEY CKEY L lecturing at the Academy of Radio LAFF-A-DAY New Chairman Cop. 1948, King Waid gs store." "We were madly in love--then his father sold the candy OSWALD E. LENNOX New chairman of the Ontario Se- curities Commission, succeeds C. P. McTague to that post, accord- ing to announcement of Attorney- General Blackwell. Mr. Lennox, veteran of 20 years at Osgoode Hall, was a Master of the Supreme Court of Ontario, and had served as vice-chairman of the Securities Commission since 1947, Tomorrow Arts in Toronto. Sinclair's wife, Alice Moather, a noted radio actress, is her hus- band's severest critic and keeps the bearded author's clothes more or less tidy. Careless about such rou- tine matters as dress and time of day, Sinclair is critical of sec- ond®rate writing and revises his own work several times. All 12 plays in Sinclair's book have been edited by the author in a way to appeal to the ordinary reader. Production notes are writ- ten in a brief, lucid style and should be of great value to groups interest- ed in producing the plays. Special directions have been in- serted so that moods which would ordinarily have to be interpreted by the actors have been made clear to amateurs. This is reminiscent of the published plays of George Bern- ard Shaw, a writer whom Sinclair greatly admires. Indeed, this is not the only re- pect in which the work may be compared with that of Shaw. The plays are, in the main, propaganda pieces for the author's ideas, pre- sented in a compelling fashion yet with enough spritely wit, or some- times sardonic humor, as in "Epi- taph On A War Of Liberation," to keep the reader's emotions aroused. "An artist" says Sinclair, "is a person entrusted with a red-hot message which he has to deliver or it will burn his fingers." COMBAT ALCOHOLISM Montreal, June 25 -- (CP) -- The National Committee for Edu- cation on Alcoholism, meeting here Thursday, laid plans for a domin- jon-wide industrial conference on alcoholism.
