PAGE SIXTEEN THE DAILY TIMES See Fuel Pump Test Important Job of Tune-up Fuel pump test and inspection must always be an important part of proper engine tune-up procedure. | If shortly after he has paid for a complete engine tune-up, a custo- | mer's car stalled on the road due to | fuel pump failure--well, it would not be necessary to guess at his! opinion of the service organization. Fuel pump service is profitable * business, but it is poor practice to ~ walt for complete failure of® the unit before selling customers pump service. The purpose of the fuel pump is to move fuel from the tank to the carburetor float cham- ber at the correct pressure and in| sufficient quant®y to meet the maximum requirements of the en-! gine. When this function ceases! . completely the vehicle just does not | €o any further under its own pow- | er, which means a job for the tow | truck, and an irritated customer to pacify. shop; otherwise someone else is likely to get that business. The en- tire fuel supply system must be checked--not just the fuel pump; and always check while the pump-is installed on the engine. Don't take it off to check it. Test Procedure Inefficient fuel pump perform- ance may mean that the engine will not run at all, or loss of power will result if the pump does not supply enough gasoline for maxi- mum demands of the engine. In some cases it is possible for the pump to supply too much gasoline, causing the carburetor to "flood", particularly when idling. If the carburetor floods, the engine will be hard to start when hot. If the engine is not getting gaso- line, first check to be sure there is gasoline in the tank--do not take the driver's word. Remember, the fault may be in the pump, in the fuel line and con- nections, or in the gasoline tank. A quick test may be made by discon- necting the line at the carburetor and turning the engine over with the starter with the ignition switch off. If gasoline spurts out of the fuel ling in full stream," 1t can be assumed that thesystem is okay. "nect the line and check for leaks, or loose connections, all the way pack to the tank. A slight air leak on the intake side will reduce the vacuum and consequently cause | an inadequate supply to the pump. Bubbles in the glass filter bowl in- dicate such an air leak. 2. Chéck for leak at filter bewl seat and in- | stall 4 new gasket to ensure a seal. | 3. Remove and clean the stainer in | the filter" bowl, which may be clog- ged to such an extent as to ob- struct fuel flow, particularly the type ith thin metal discs. 4 | Check the flexible fuel line for por ous condition and replace if 'neces- sary. 5. Make sure all fuel pump external plugs and filter bowl drain valves are tight; also check the "cover screws and tighten them if necessary. If gasoline drips from the breather holes in the pump body, this indicates a defective dias' phragm and the pump must be res moved and completely overhauled. Fuel Pump Analyzer with the engine running at idle and the time required to fill a pint measure, through a "bleed" valve on the tester, is noted. The pumps used on small engines should {ill the pint in one minute. If a gréater length of time is required the pump must bé removed, provided - the points mentioned in the above par- agraph have been carefully check- ed okay. A fuel pump in good operating condition is capable of delivering about double the amount of gasoline the engine will use un- der normal conditions. Vacuum Gauge Tests If a' fuel pump analyzer is not available, the vacuum gauge may be used for testing. First: Disconnect the gasoline line at the pump in- stake and connect the gauge to the pump, being sure the connection is air-tight. Now start the engine and run it at a fast idle on the fuel in the carburetor float chamber. . How Pump Operates An understanding of the operat- ing principles of th. fuel pump will help the .mechanic in diagnosing and correcting troubles in the gaso- line supply system. These pumps are of the mechanical diaphragm type and power for their operation is applied to the rocker arm by an eccentric on the camshaft. As the high part of the eccentric moves the rocker arm towards the pump body, this movement, through the linkage and rod, pulls the dia-| phragm away from the fuel cham- ber against the diaphragm away from the, fuel chamber against the diaphragm spring pressure. This lowers 'the pressure. and creates a partial 'vacuum in the chamber, which allows atmospheric pressure on top of the fuel in the gasoline tank, to force the gasoline through | the pipe line to the inlet valve i (which is pushed open against light { spring pressure) 'and into. the fuel | chamber. During this part of 3Ee operation the outlet valve is seated by {ts spring. rocker arm returns to the low part of the'cam eccentric the compressed diaphragm spring is released and the pressure created forces the out- { let valve open, allowing the fuel to | pass through into the carburetor i bowl, During this part of the oper- When the' ation the pressure in the fuel | The flow of fuel from the pump 'is controlled by the carburetor float, which opens and closes a needle valve. s pressure is built up in the- pump fuel chamber it prevents the diaphragm from mak- ing fuel flow. In fact, while driving at constant speed, part throttle, the diaphragm will only move a few thousandths of an inch on each stroke, Note that the diaphragh spring operates the. pump on the discharge stroke. Hand Operation of Pump | Reoperation of the pump of the car is a comparatively simple job. Before disassembling, mark the pump body and cover so that they can be reassembléd in their origin- al position. Prouer installation of the 'diaphragh when.the pump cov- er is assembled on the body is the most important single *item to be observed. Line up the marks on tha body and cover; then get the diaphragm levél by moving the rocker arm. Hold it in this posi- tion-and start thé screws, being sure that they pasy through the holes in the diaphragm easily without damaging the fabric. Tight- en the screws only enough so that they just touch the lock washers. | Then, in order to flex the dfaph- ' ragm properly, push the rocker arm Back and forth several strokes, re- leasing with a snap, Finally tight- til the defect is located. | For a simple bench test, set up' the pump 30 inches above a con- | SO TING 2 IRON DoW tainer of gasoline, using a length , steel glove f | of tubing.
