(Girl and Dol) De Gaulle Poses Problem On West Germany Issue By RELMAN MORIN Associated Press News Analyst For the first time in their mutu- ally acrimonious history, Gen. Charles De Gaulle and the French Communists are political bedfellows today, a fact that reaffirms the truth of the old axiom. Neither De Gaulle nor the Com- munists approve of the plan to uni- fy Western Germany. The General's political party, Rassemblement Due Peuple Fran- cals, is the strongest opponent of Communism in France. Vice versa, De Gaulle is the man whom the Reds hope is least likely to succeed. Nevertheless, and for totally dif- ferent reasons, they find them- selves lined up together today on the German issue. Together, they ney be strong enough to bring about the dissolution of parliament ani to cause a general election, and a new government. And so the question again arises in the minds of millions '2f people, on both sides of the Atlantic: is Charles De Gaulle another dictator- in-the-making? . The answer, I believe, is "no." And I would hasten to emphasize that that is a strictly personal opin- ion, not shared by all the corres- pondents who watched him, during the war, and came to know him. De Gaulle is an odd combination of a soldier, a mystic, a college pro- fessor, a technician, a historian and an idealist. = What he is not is a politician. Compromise is the essence of po- litics -- and De Gaulle has dem- onstrated, over and over again, that he will not compromise on matters of principle. In London during the war, the clang and clate ter of his cyclopean Battles with Winston Churchill could be heard all the way from 10 Downing Street to the East End docks. At Casae blanca, he clashed, almost on sighs, with President Roosevelt. Again, immediately after the war, remember that he came to power in Paris. But when the rest of the French government declined to ape prove his plant for & centralized regime, with greater power concene trated in the hands of the Premier, he did not compromise. He resigned, De Gaulle has an inexorable single ness of purpose. And once he sets his sights on an object, he will not look the other way--even for power. That trait alone would. disqualify him as a potential dictator. He won't make deals. He won't trade horses. And if he owns a backe stretcher, he has never been known to use it. His mental powers are unques- tioned. History may show that he had an almost clairvoyant vision, of the future of. Europe.
