WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES.-GAZETTE PAGE FIFTEEN Democracy Is An Irresistible Force For Good BOSTON, Mass. June 7--De- claring 'that democratic govern- ment is the instrument through which an irresistible, spiritual force being channeled into the affairs bf men, The Christian Science Board of Directors today urged Christian Scientists, in annual meeing, here, to work strongly and actively for the defense of free governments throughout the world. | d Rightly conceived, the Directors told the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, democratic gov- ernment is something more than an aggregation. of legislative acts and legalized rules of conduct. Thousands of Christian Scien- tists from many parts of the world heard the Directors issue a dis- tinct challenge to the proud boast- ful "Goliaths of today, as they go to and fro in the earth. Denying God, they are denying their own life, for God is the only life of man," they stated. \? In free governments, now seri- ously endangered by the modern Goliaths, the directors com- mented, there is a force that gathers its strength from "the same eter- nal truth given by Christ Jesus in his peerless Sermon on the Mount," Ultimately it shall be seen, they said, that "no individual or na- tion on earth can withstand the power and presence of God and His Christ." ' The Directors' statement high- lighted a series of papers and re- ports made to the Annual Meet- ing. Set against the background of the great Mother Church dome and the Church' park resplendent with mid-Spring blooms, the re- ports stressed the renaissance of religious activities throughout the postwar world, and reemphasized the privileges of free assembly and human symbols of "spiritual free- om. With the warnings of serious d.ngers to democratic government, the Directors also gave assurance that the antagonists of free gov- ernment, like the Goliaths of old, were merely "inviting their own doom." . . The incoming President, Harry C. Browne, whose only official duty is to preside at the Annual Meet- ing, declared that the success of any organization, institution or government depends upon the spi- ritual efficacy of the governing or controlling instrument. Other reports from the Treas- urer and Clerk of The Mother Church, The Christian Science Board of Lectureship, Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society, Committee on Publication, and Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy stressed the world-wide progress of the Christian Science movement during the last year.
