SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINE Canada Supplies Caviar To Markets Of World Toronto, Juné 4.--(CP)--- Caviar s Canada's newest industry and Apparently going places, Harry L. Dongldson of North , Ont, (Northern Caviar, Ltd.) EB up 30 years as a mine manag- to get into something that would t¢ up his time and give him a modest living, f After four days #t the Canadian nternataional Trade Fair, where is jars of caviar line a booth, he hinks he is in a considerablé bu- biness. : "About every country in the world as shown interést i our product. have one offer to buy my- entire production, which, however, I won't e. If I had four or five times much, I could sell it right hére. t would have taken fivé or 10] yéars to do what the fair has done or me in a few days." Donaldson started his study of paviar two years ago, first with the ntention of importing the Rus- flan product in bulk from New Work and packing it. Then he became interested in de- eloping a Canadian caviar. Hé brought in sturgeon roe from the orthern Canadian lakes from Lake ipissing in Ontario to Great Slave for the last year it has beén on the tables of leading Canadian hotels, while experiments continued, The sturgéon which produces this black gold is a luxury fish en all counts, Its flesh, aside from the ro€, sells for about $1.40 a pound in the New York market, wheré it is smoked. It ranges in size from about 35 or 40 pounds to 78 or 100, land from 20 pounds up of roe may Ibe taken from one fish. No. 1 Ca- nadian caviar produced from it sells for about $15 & pound, or r&- ther more in smaller packages. While sturgéon is the source of caviar, Canadian or Russian, Mr. Donaldson says he has been asked to. also produce salmon caviar next year, : : : He chose North Bay for his plant because of its facilities as a rafl and air centre to which roe from northérn lakes can be flown in. His production to date has not been large, but he expects to pro- duce about 4% tons this year, and 0% the b of his experience at the fairsH€ doesn't know where he is going from there. It has been a family affair, him- self, his wifé, and two daughters, but he thinks he will have to ex- ake in fhé Northwest Territories pand his plant fo the extent of em- hnd experimented. Now hé thinks ploying a dozen or more girls for hé has a product to rival any, and | packing. True, he will come armed with LIBERAL pre-election PROMISES. Promises which CANNOT? be fulfilled by a dying Geévernment. Thé Liberal method has been to pay no atfeén- tion to its supporters ONCE THEY ARE ELECTED. For that. reason, as well as for many others, Liberal private Members are AT LAST droused. They are deliberately refusing to support this teo-long in power Government and are giving clear evidence of their belief that LIBERALISM is gone forever if his Government is NOT DEFEATED and the Liberal Party, in ition; brought back fo the practice of its principles and \raditions, "MR. KING'S Government has been in office, through 23 or 27 years; has been int office CONTINUOUSLY since 1935. The Record CLEARLY indicates that if the ESSENTIAL SAFE- GUARDS TO OUR FEEEDOM are 16 be maintained and éxténded, the LIBERAL GOVERNMENT MUST GO at the First Opportunity. SPEED THEM ON THEIR WAY. LET THE BY-ELECTION be notice to THEM that IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE. HIGH COST OF LIVING WHY are we, Canadian citizens, faced with an unpregedented Hsé in the COST OF LIVING? " WHY are we, at tHe samte time--and so long affer the war-- burdened with the HIGHEST taxation. DIRECT AND INDIRECT that was ever i d in our peaceti history? The Liberal Government has all the fr ver required to eontrol the banking affairs of this country AND YET, it has followed a poMey of credit expansion under which Canada's credit has expanded twice as fast as the supply of g60ds hs béén increased. NOTHING COULD HAPPEN UNDER SUCH A POLICY BUT THAT PRICES WOULD RISE, . . The Liberal Government has MAINTAINED A TYPE OF CON- TROL over the farm prices of foodstufls; YET it has wot maintained cofitrols on the costs of producing these foodstuffs. THUS IT HAS PENALIZED THE FARMER AND PRODUCTION HAS GONE DOWN. The Liberal Gover has been insistent on easing its own debt burden. In doing this, IT HAS CONFISCATED ONE-THIRD of the value of the income of EVERY PERSON IN CANADA LIVING on a fixed income who has had no .inerease im that income. The Liberal Government has been building up a surplus--but HOW? Out of unwatrentedly high direet taxation and by refusing to implement those long-proriised Social Seetirity measures to which YOUR taxation entitles yom, The Liberal Government has refused to discard the Sales Tax and many other Hidden Taxes which drive pricés UP, OF INTEREST TO OSHAWA WORKERS Prior t6 ABBOTT'S radio édict of November 17, 1948, the Exclse Tax ofi Passenger Cars sold in Canada haa® 4 STRAIGHT TEN PER CENT OF THE MANUFACTURERS' PRICE. Thi: was replaced by an ding seale as follows: 25 pet éent on the first $1,200 of the manufacturers' price; 50 per ¢ent on the amount between $1,200 and $2,000; 75 per cent on everything OVER $2,000. This onerous Excise Tax is piled on top of the 8 per cent Sales Tax--which remains unéhanged. ADDED TO ALL THIS is anh IMPORT QUOTA resiricting the amount of importation of CARS AND PARTS. This formula effec- tively limits both the number of cars to be manufactured in Canada, hod well as the number of COMPLETE AUTOMOBILES which may be ported. The Automobile Manufacturers, Dealers, ind the GENERAL PUBLIC, quite propérly conténd that effective import controls have femoved the last vestige of fieed for the excessive excise tax as a means of conserving United States' dollars. The fact that OUR NATIONAL SURPLUS is in the neighborhood of $800 MILLION is a CLEAR INDICATION that the Excise tdx on automobiles IS NOT REQUIRED FOR REVENUE, S80 WHAT? The Automobile Industry, feeling that this EXCESSIVE and DISCRIMINATORY TAX POLICY of the Liberal Government is bound to be reflected in a dwindling market and reduced employ- ment, has SOUGHT IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF THE EXCISE TAX ON PASSENGER CARS. ALL THEIR APPEALS TO DATE HAVE BEEN IN VAIN, The Motor Car Industry quite properly contends that the auto- mobile is NOT A LUXURY and that this EXCESSIVE exci~s tax is a discriminatory burden upon those whe have real need for auto- mobiles in business. They have also pointed out that the particularly heavy tax now in effeet RAISES THE RETAIL PRICE OF AUTO- MOBILES BEYOND THE REACH OF A LARGE SECTION OF THE BUYING PUBLIC. Unless the Goveriiment recognizes seon the validity of these points, SERIOUS DAMAGE WILL BE DONE TO THE ENTIRE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY IN CANADA, and thots- ands uf persons, directly and indirectly dependent upon it for their livelihood will find themisélves in a serious plight. The Party whose Battle Cry is "SHARE THE MISERY!" I you elect ~ C.C.F. candidate, you give your approval to a party seeking your vote with impractical promises and half-truths in their claims of swccessfal implementing or their reforms in Saskatchewan, In fiction, regarding the much discussed Government Automobile Insurance we hear from our C.C.F. candidates that coverage in Sas- katchewan costs $6.00. In fact, we know that there are variables which increase this cost, or destroy its effectiveness, The public have been compelled to accept limited benefits, the collision coverage has $100 deductable as has the property damage, n. it is a matter of record that four out of five property damage claims are under $100. That the Saskatch Gover t is aware of serious gaps in its scheme is evidenced by their offering a package policy which cost $18.00, It is a little difficult to understand why the gaps cost more than the original cover. The Saskatchewan government advertises now. Your license-- plus the Package Policy, equals adequate protection. There does not seem to be much equity in collecting money for a service you cannot provide. C.C.F. COULD GRAB OUR FARMS With, their only substantial success scored inh agricultural Sas- katchewan, the C.C.F. have been notably silent on one major plank in their platform for socialism--nationalization of farm lands. That sort of thing, they know would hardly appeal to the men who till their own land in Saskatchewan and whe incidentally, cast the deciding vote in any election in that province, Party strategy, presumably, directs that the farm nationalization plank be kept well wrapped in moth balls until perhaps the CCF wins some urban ground. Then, in keeping with the well-established CCF policy of stirring up one class against another, it could be dangled in front of city voters who would be told that taking over the farms would mean cheaper food. But sometimes in the heat of debate a CCF spokesman, forgets the offi ial time table and lets the cat out of the bag. That appears to have happened in Parliament the other day. The Printed Word dug up this disclosure: MR, E. L. BOWERMAN, CCF member for Prince Albert: "We are driven to this conclusion--the only thing that will solve our present social and ec ic probl is absolute Christian social~ ization of the means of production and distribution of all neces- sities of life. MR. GRAYDON: "Does that include farmers?" MR. BOWERMAN: "That would include everybody." Canadian farmers everywhere would be well to note that direct threat. When CCF orators start talking of the State taking over they don't just mean the banks znd the insurance companies and some of the big urban industries, they mean all forms of produc- tion, of which the farms are the greatest and most important. These examples are just a few of the many unkept election promises of the CCF Saskatchewan Government. Truly it has laboured like a mountain and brought forth little white mice. The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommended a system which is characterized by rigid ob- servance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improve- ment. . They call themselves liberals, but they are intent on abolishing ty. , They call themselves democrats but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the gover P They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office. Every man a subordinate clerk in a bureau, what an alluring Utopia! What a noble cause to fight for! Against all this frenzy of agitation there is but one weapon available; r Just sense is needed to prevent man from falling a prey to illusory fantasies and empty catchwords. And when you have exercised your good sense, we feel suge you will repudiate this organization, high in promise and sterile in execution at the June 8 polls. If OUR Canadian Way of Life is to survive, it is IMPERATIVE that, at the FIRST opportunity a SOUND, SANE, PROGRESSIVE GOVERNMENT MUST BE INFTALLED at Ottawa. Vote Progressivc-Conservative for realistic legislatio.
