The margarine ration is helped by a few more whales taken in the Antarctic and weakened by slow | progress in bringing new acres of peanuts to production in Africa. | A three-month agreement with Canada ensures bacon shipments for the time being, but future meat | supplies from Argentine, which pro- vides one-third of Britain's needs, are jeopardized by difficulties in negotiation, Poland, Denmark, Russia and other European countries undertake to send food for man and beast, but they can't send enough to compen- sate for the £66,000,000 ($264,000,000) reduction in food purchases from dollar countries. | Vast Australian areas of waste land will be brought into use to raise livestock and crops, helped by British finances if necessary. But it will be years before this production fattens. the British ration. In the meantime, Food Minister Strachey says he may be unable to maintain | the potato ration of three pounds a | head weekly, | Soon the peace will be three years old--and British rations are smaller | than when Hitler stood on the French coast. The new year dawned with the promise rations would give | the individual 2,700 calories daily | compared with 2,870 in 1947 and | 3,000 before the war. | For 1 prices are increasing. Shell | eggs have been boosted from 1s 9d to 3s a dozen. Other recent increases have been bacon, up by between 5d and 9d a pound, sugar by from | 3d to 5d and tea by an average of 4d." | These gains follow the govern- | ment decision to hold present food | subsidies at the present level of | about £392,000,000 ($1,568,000,000) | annually. This means that when | higher prices are paid for Canadian | bacon and similar imports the in- | dividual consumer feels the sect | at once. Britain's children still get special | consideration, including rations of cod liver. oil and orange juice and free milk in schools. But older | people especially elderly couples or | those who live alone, find rationing increasingly harsh. The basic ration | which includgs nine ounces of bread | daily, 1s woyth of meat weekly and | eight ouncgs of butter -and fats, | provides a pare subsistence diet. | the chemical element fluorine. | the drinking water | THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW By Al Fagaly and Harry Shorten A MR WHETLIP CALLED, MR. ANY- Fluorine Tested ' As Prevention For Tooth Decay By HOWAKD W. BLAKESLEE New York--(AP)--Dentists are testing a treatment to germ-proof children's teeth against future de- cay. The germ-proofing is done yi his is not a case of being certain of better teeth but of offering pa- rents what looks like the best bet yet in dentistry. It is being tried by dentists in New York and else- | | where. The germ-proofing treatment is the latest in a series of studies covering 10 years of fluorine and teeth. Up to 10 "years ago yarine was regarded as a heain hazard. This chemical, found in in at least 200 areas in the United States, was known to cause mottled teeth. These green-brown spots disfi- gured teeth permanently, but this misfortune happened only to chil- | dren who drank water continuous=- | ly for years. The damage was done only under the age of 12. After | that teeth became immune to fluo- rine damage. Just about 10 years ago a scien- tist poking around with some rat teeth experiments noticed that ani- mals with teeth mottled from flu- orine had less decay than others. This suggested that perhaps a little bit of fluorine in drinking water or elsewhere might build better teeth instead of spotting them. The spotting came from too much flu- orine. It was found that a little of the fluorine entered the enamel of children's teeth. This fluorine ap- parently became 'a permanent part | sonably | proof, because only | pen with no fluorine. In all these cases the drop in tooth decay in | from 25 per cent to 50 per cent. of the enaniel. Then it was learned ! that decayed teeth contained less | fluorine than sound teeth in vir- tually all cases, A further step came with find- ings that there were fewer tooth- decay germs in the mouths of chil- dren with the larger amounts of fluorine in thei teeth. The germ is lactobacillus acidophilus.
