"WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINE | [Refused to Kill Husband )| With Car, Man Testifies "As 'Would Lose License' i i \ i Montreal, March 17.--(CP)-- Ar- mand Lafleur, truck driver, testi- fied in court yesterday he had turned down a $700 offer to kill one of the principals in a love triangle because he feared if he ran his truck over the prospective victim he would lose his driver's - lieence. Lafleur gave his startling evi- dence at the preliminary hearing of Camille Caron, charged with counselling and offering 700 to Léfeur to do away with Eugene " Bedard. Caron was ordered to stand trial and bail was refused. Lafleur said he knew Caron was in love with Bedard's wife, Caron had offered an added inducement ~--"you will be free to marry the daughter and I can marry the mother," Lafleur admitted he was in love with Jacqueline Bedard, the-daughter. "First Caron suggested I knock down Bedard with my truck on the street," said Laflaur. "Next he showed me two firearms, one a .32 calibre automatic and the other a 38 calibre revolver. I didn't like the look of either." Lafleur also said, in reply to de- fence counsel, that the offer was not made as a joke. Name Committee Handle Material Far East Bale MRS. B. OKE Correspondent 'Courtice-Ebenezer, March 16.-- The March meeting of the Wo- man's Missionary Society was held in the Sunday School room with the presdient Mrs. A. J. Oke oc- cupying the chair. A hymn was sung, followed by one minute silent prayer for our departed member, Mrs. Frank Worden. During the business period, Mrs. Eric Courtice, Mrs. Wilfrid Brown and Mrs. Sydney Worden were ap- pointed to cut out the material brought in and the sewing to be handed to the W.M.S. ladies to be made ready Yor the bale to be packed shortly for the Far East. "-A letter of thanks was read by the president which was received from Miss Luella Rorke, for parcel received. Those in charge of the Easter meeting will be Mrs. Ross Pearce, Mrs. Yardley and Mrs. Ed. Wade. The devotional period was in charge of Mrs. Blake Courtice ' and Mrs. Esli Oke. After singing a hymn, Mrs. Courtice led in prayer. Literature secretary, Mrs. Hopkins, gave a short account of "The Bible For All the World," and stressed the point for all members to do more mis- sionary reading. Prayer was of- fered by Mrs. R. E. Osborne. The topic of the program, "The Bible for Africa and South America," was taken as a round table discussion by five ladies: Mrs. A. J. Gay, Mrs. Robert Courtice, Miss Ann Holt, Mrs. Carl Down and Mrs. Russell Gay. This was made interesting by each of the ladies presenting a word picture of the difficulty en- countered by such missionaries as Rev. and Mrs. Deck, who went to South America; Rev. A. Hensey to African Congo, and Dr. Eugene Nida of the Armenian Bible Society. Meeting closed with Hymn 253 and benediction. C.G.LT. Meeting The C.GIT. opened its meet- ing with games, after which all re- peated the C.G.I.T. and Explorers' Purpose. The Scripture reading was given by Mrs. Lloyd Courtice, followed by repeating the Lord's Prayer. Secretary and treasurer reported and the roll called. This week the meeting will be held on Thursday night. Hymn 502 was sung and work period conducted, with fancy work, knitting, shell work, etc. The Woman's Association held an all day quilting at the church on Thursday,- when many ladies were in attendance, and three quilts were done. A pot-luck dinner was served and some remained for sup- per and finished the quilts, after which a Sunday school meeting was held. The regular monthly meet- ing will be held on Wednesday night, March 17 in the church, The "Pussyfoot Minstrels," a show from the I.O.OF. Lodge, |da Oshawa, will be presented April 13 at Courtice Church, under the aus- pices of the Women's Association. Keep this date open. A piano, radio, new cupboards have been bought and paid for, and 'then chairs and tables were needed. B® Some thirty chairs were pro- /8 cured and nice ones, too, but which ere to still be paid for and on Friday night some very mean and low down person or persons, broke a new sixteen dollar lock, on the. school door. and stole all but four of the chairs, the two motors for pumping the water in 'the school, and would no doubt have taken the small tables but they had been Joaned to the Woman's Association for their "Lost Heir" party and had not been returned from the church. Just a few weeks ago some person had tried hard to pry open the new cupboards which had the in also. This is really pretty dis- couraging as the ladies have done everything possible to try and make the grade. On Thursday of this week, a shower is being held at the home of Mrs. O. Hooey for supplies for the cupboard, and on Saturday, March 20 at 2:30, a spring tea is being served with booths of fancy work, home-made cooking.
