Market stalls are stacked with food and store windows ccowded with American luxury goods which, more than anything else, repre- sent to Europeans today the luxu- ries of a far-off world. British commercial relations have existed for centuries, and now the hig aireraft that make Lisbon's up-to-date airport a European landfall bring a steady flow of visitors from the United States. In the big hotels English is heard more often than Portugese and al- most every downtown newstand has as many. British and Anwerican publications as Portugese. The luxury goods so lavishly displayed remain out of reacii of the great mass of 8,000,000 Poy- tuguese, however. Living standards are still low compaled with the western world, though they are higher than they have ever heen in Portugal. Remote villages now can be reached in a few nours over good new roads. In the villages them- selves, old cottages occupied for centuries are bing renlaced by mo- dern houses. The Salazar government is mak: ing steady progress with a house and school building campaign.
