BUNDESEN, M.D. Treating Cancer of the Lip It is not often that a mild dis- order develops into a serious one, but cancer of the lip is a decided exception to this general rule. It| often begins as nothing more dan- gerous seeming than a mere thick- ening of the skin, or it may develop from such apparently harmless conditions as a tiny sore or a re- current cracking of the skin. If any of the conditions develop which might lead to cancer of the lip, immediate treatment by a phy- sician is advisable, As a rule, some type of simple operative treatment is all that is required to get rid of these condi- tions. Naturally, when the thick- ened skin or ulcer is removed, all of the affected tissues should be cut out. : On Lower Lip. . The usual location of a carcino- ma of the lip is on the lower lip. It appears that this type of tumor growth occurs almost entirely in men. It is thought that the con- tinued exposure to bad weather or irritation from tobacco may help to bring on this type of cancer. L J Much of the success and dur- ability of a permanent wave de- pends upon the thorough shampbo, which is the basic principle of hair loveliness. The home shampoo is not always what it should be. You are fighting a combination of at- mospheric dust and sebaceous oil; it does not give way easily. The shampoo medium must be first class, washing technique perfect. Start with a brisk brushing fol- lowed by a warm water rinsing with a bath spray. Using a good liquid-conditioning shampoo, do zig-zag rubbing along the hair line--forward, sides and back. Gradually fluff up the suds to the crown of the head. When scrub- bing the crown let thumbs and fin- gers meet, do a vigorously clawing movement, Warm Water Instead of turning on the spray to remove the lather, keep pouring a little warm water on the head to weaken the suds. While doing this, keep lifting the hair, strand by strand.. Then tun on the spray, using water as hot as can be com- J * fortably endured and rinse thor- oughly. Repeat the lathering, repeat the spraying. If the hair is extremely oily, there should be three soap- ings and a fina] rinse with vine- gar. Fill the wash bowl with warm water, add three tablespoonfuls of vinegar, pour over the head, lifting the hair so the water will be dis- tributed. Hamburg Potatoes-- ingredients: 10 potatoes; milk; flour; season- ing; five medium onions; three- quarters pound hamburg steak. Method: pare potatoes; slice and place in layers as for scalloped po- tatoes; slice or chop onions; spread hamburg over top of potatoes, then add sliced onions; add just enough milk to come to the level of the potatoes, but do not cover the meat. Bake in a moderate oven until potatoes are thoroughly cook- ed, and hamburg lightly browned on top. Beef Loaf -- ingredients: one pound ground beef (hamburg); one large onion chopped; grated rind and juice of one-half lemon; three cups bread crumbs; one egg; one teaspoon salt; one-half cup milk. Put all ingredients together in bow! and mix well, (Two table- spoons tomato may be used if lem- on is not available). Put in well- greased baking dish, and bake 45 minutes.
