Veteran Thespian Recalls Early Drama By DOUGLAS GREEN Canadian Press Staff Writer Calgary, Feb. 2--(CP)--Early re- cords aof amateur dramatic activi- ties in southern Alberta generally are overshadowed by stories of the "cow town" era kind and the obiter dicta of such legendary figures as the late Bob Edwards of "Calgary Eye-Opener" game, But Frederick 8. Dyke, formerly of Calgary and now living at Lantz. ville, B, C., who was connected with many of the early performances, recalls that gala performances at the old Hull "O'ry House" of such perenhial favorites as the "Mika- do," other Gilbert and Sullivan op- eras and the frequent musical and minstrel shows organized by the late Crispin Smith, a police magis- trate, caused a stir in society. Calgary became really conscious of the drama with the building of the Sherman Grand Playhouse in 1912, Modern for the times, the playhouse seated about .3,000 and offered an inducement to first class travelling companies to play Cal- gary. The first amateur production re- called by Mr, Dyke was a perform- ance in 1927 of Sir James Barrie's "Alice Sit-by-the-Fire," in which Mrs. Ida Landale, now a torchbear- er for the Victoria Little Theatre movement, played the lead. The Alberta Drama League was formed in 1932. In all subsequent regional drama festivals held un- der the league's auspices up to the outbreak of war, the Calgary L.T.A. In Alberta and its successor, the Calgary Thea- tre Guild, were well represented. The Calgary L.T.A. joined forces in 1931 with a sister organization, the Calgary Green Room Club, and under the new name of the Calgary Theatre Guild presented with increasing success may even- ings of full length and one-act plays. An annual city drama festival sponsored by the Guild and organ- ized by Mr. Dyke enabled church, school and other dramatic groups to compete, In its fifth year it at- tracted no fewer than 15 local en- tries, necessitating a five-night run of oneact plays. Somewhat later the Guild en- gaged Frank Hoyroyd of Edmonton as professional director. A new playhouse, formerly an abandoned oll exchange, was opened in 1936 by, the late Lord Tweedsmuir, when a' performance of M. Shairp's "The Crime of Blosscm" was presented under Mr. Holroyd's direction. The present Calgary Civic Thea- tre was formed in 1944, with pro- ductions given- e former Bu- gene Coste home, ich is the nu cleus for a future civic centre. The influence of the Banff School of Fine Arts, inaugurated in August, 1933, under the auspices of the extension department of the University of Alberta has been noteworthy in the development of amateur dramatics in southern Al. berta. The school's annual sessions, now covering an entire month, at- tract students from all parts of Canada and elsewhere. 's wax Yorks Q. 11:15--Christ! CJBC 11:15--Robe!
