PAGE SIX "THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY (4, 1948 BEAUTY FOR YOU -- How Goes the Hoofing? By HELEN JAMESON Women seem to take it for grant- ed that painful feet are the com- mon lot that there is not much to be done about the matter, It is a sort of curse, like relatives you don't like and bills that flock into the house the first of the month. A Gallup poll revealed that one out of every three of Uncle Sam's citizens complained of painful feet. The percentage of women alone would be considerably higher. Chi- ropodists claim that only ten wo- men among 100 have feet that are free of corns, calloused spots, in- growing nails or deformities. A fine record! It is a disgrace to the sis- terhood, since there is no need or reason for most of the discomfort. Dr, Benjamin Kauth, head of the Podiatry Society's Foot Care Insti- tute, like many a specialist before him, says that high heels should not be worn all the time. Women love them, will wear them. The shoe de- signers give the women what they want. The ill effects of spikes will be lessened if the dear girls will wear them only on festive evenings, find the right heel height to be worn during the day. The spike throws the body for- ward at an abnormal angle, causing a compensating backward move- ment which may produce curvature of the spine. Calf muscles may be shortened and, of rcourse, the big toe is cramped and distorted, If you have been' wearing high heels for many years, as many wo- men have been doing, avoid a sud- den change to flats. Get heels them~ selves accustomed to their new hou. ses, At no time should flat, sloppy house slippers be worn by the home- boss who must travel the domestic beat all day -- answering doorbells and the telephone, going from room to room, washing dishes, standing for hours at the ironing board. The good old oxford--not always handsome, but always dependable-- is the correct selection for the housewife, It should have an all leather sole, a heel not higher than 14) UH Avoid a sudden change from high to low heels. LAE BR 3 one and one half inch, This style of shoe provides support, so neces- sary if the feet are not to get tired long before a woman is ready to crawl into bed, Mid-season shoe styles are sub- dued in decoration, tend more to- ward contours that will provide comfort. Slender ankle straps are cute tricks, as many a woman has found out, to her delight. You can even have double straps on the an- kle or instep. Delicacy is enhanced by the thin, clean edges of the lea- ther soles. When you fare forth to stalk footwear, do not consider style alone, Give your feet a break. House them comfortably. Be good to them and they will be good to you. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT Ordering Dinner? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: I am to ha + first "date" * dine out soon, oy friend | g invited me to dine with him in a very nice restaurant in our ollege- town. In talking this over with my brother, he insisted that I must give my order to my escort, who gives both our orders to the waiter. He said that fellows could "choke girls who gie their own orders to the waiter." Is it true that the girl should give her order to her es- cort, not to the waiter? Lorna. It certainly is true that a girl who knows what's what tells her order to her escort, who relays . both orders to the .waiter, men- tioning first her order. And it cer- tainly is true that a man who is being the host and who is trying to be a good host, strenuously re- sents a girl's giving her order di- rectly to the waiter, or calling the waiter to ask for bread, water or . whatever she wishes, or in any other way taking over the man's position as host. She Is Going To Her First "Deb Party" Dear Mrs, Beeckman: I have never been to a tea which is also a coming-out party, but |- now I have been invited to one which is to be given for a girl whom I don't know very well, but whose mother I have known well for several years. (1) Should this formal invitation be answered? If 50, how? (2) Am I expected to send her a gift? If so, what? (3) What type of dress should I wear? (4) Will thére be a receiving-line? If so, what do I say to those in it? R.M. (1) If there is an "R.S.V.P." on the invitation. (and there usually is, for the hostess wants to know how many guests to provide for), vou must reply, and you really should reply even if there is no special request for an answer. (2) You may, if you wish '(it is not necessary) send the debutante a bouquet or a box of flowers . . . these flowers are used as a decora- tive background for the occasion. (3) Wear an afternoon dress (street-length) and a harmonizing hat. (4) The debutante will receive with her. mother, Wish the debu- tante a "very happy season." It 1s The Hostess Who Rises First Dear Mrs. Beeckmany My husband and 'I have just moved into our new house and are planning to give a series of simple dinners, for six or eight guests. | (We are deep in social debts to our friends!) There are two sisters in: our new neighborhood who are available as visiting cook and wait- ress, and with them we can have a bit more formality than we otherwise could. One question I'm eritirely uncertain about: Do I, the hostess, or m# husband, the host, or the guest of honor (when we have one) rise first, to indicate the close of the dinner and suggest that we go to the living-room for after-dinner coffee? Roma. You, the hostess, should rise first. If gonvenient for your plans (and for your visiting service!) your husband may indicate to the men that they stay at table (al- though, of course, they have al risen when you and the women guests rise) for after-dinner coffee and smoking, and you go with the ladies (for most formality you go first with the woman guest of honor) to have coffee in the living- TUSSY WIND and WEATHER LOTION | is a 108 1.50 Regular $2.50 Size. Yet there are inumerable -between- tones and tints, True red can be extra gay, it can be medium, it can be natural, it can suggest the the- atrical. To use these selections, a girl should have a complexion that is without a blemish because there is a strong contrast. between the glowing lips and the skin. Nail polish, of course, should be definitely related to the color of the make-up, If the finger nails carry a ruby glow, so should the portals of the mouth, If you have a yen for polish that is paler than the popu- lar wine shades, then use the same tint for cheek coloring, One must be on the watch concerning these mat- ters. Don't let your nail care end with putting on the veneer which often covers some good-looks errors. The nails need lubricating if they are to retain a delicate appearance. Massage stimulates the un- derlying blood streams, from which the nails get their nourishment, With circulation brisk, the nails will not be likely to break. A broken nail makes a woman as mad as all get out, can curdle the disposition of an angel. There are times when the home manicure must suffice, Remove the polish, and shape -the nails. Wash the hands with warm soapy* water, rinse and dry. Apply cuticle cream, lift the flesh away from the nails, with a circular motion of the orange wood sticks. Snip away hangnails, if they ap- pear. Use the nail white pencil un- der the eaves; it is more convenient than nail bleach pressed under the eaves with an orange wood stick. BUNDESEN, M.D. CURING A DIFFICULT PROBLEM All mothers witness new stages in Baby's developments with de- light. Sitting alone, the first todd- ling steps, the first recognizable words are all milestones which Mo- ther hails with pride and happi- ness. Occasionally, however, ° certain steps in this progress from baby- hood may not be taken just at the time Mother expects them 'and then she becomes apprehensive and wor- ried, with the result that her atti- tude reacts on Boby to retard him It is this sort of situation which is behind a great many stubborn cases of bedwetting or enuresis, one |' of the most common problems with which parents have to deal. Of . | course, there may be other causes, too, such as improper training, or lack of power in the muscle which controls the outlet from the blad- der, but the so-called psychogenic or mental factor is the. one mast frequently to blame, The older the child, the greater the likelihood that bedwetting is due to psycho- genic causes. A. promising new. treatment to correct. this fault. has been sug- gested. It involves the use of a substance called chorionic gonado- tropin, a glandular product. , Injections Given : Injections are given twice a week, and the dose gradually increased. As a general rule, only six injec- tions are employed and no other form of treatment used. The first injection is given directly into the skin tay determine whether or not there is any sensitivity to the pre- paration. Those who are benefited by: the treatment usually show improve- ment by the time the third injec- tion is given. If mo improvement has been evident after six. injec- tions, it is useless to continue. with the treatment. The treatment is employed until at least one week has passed without any bedwetting and at least five injections have been administered. The children are usually cured or markedly im- proved after three weeks. Those cases which have been cured have remained so after three days. Sixteen Children In a group of sixteen children treated with chorionic gonadotro- pin, the ages ed from three to fifteen years, and in all of them bed-wetting had persisted since in- fancy. There was no abnormal condition of the urinary organs. The cases were classified as im- proved when the bedwetting de- creased from three to five times weekly to about once a week. Eight of the sixteen cases showed this type of improvement. Seven of the sixteen, or almost half, were com- pletely cured. The cures, as a rule, were in the children more than six years of age. In only one instance was the treatment a complete fail- ure. No complications were noted. Of course, it is possible that the improvement occurred not only from the gonadotropin, but rather from the combined giving of the in- Jections and their mental effect on the parents and the children. As a matter of fact, bedwetting can of- ten be cured entirely if the parents will adopt the proper attitude to- ward the problem, avoiding punish- ment, 'bribery, and similar measures 32 the attempt to overcome the ha- When the bedwetting is due to some physical abnormality of the bladder or kidneys of the spinal column, this treatment will not help. When the cause is due to some disease, such as an infection of the bladder or kidneys, or diabe- tes, then again this treatment will fail. For this reason, a physician must first carefully determine the cause of the bedwetting < before treatment is st arted.
