Payments to the royal family are made through the civil list ap- proved by parliament. His Majes- ty received the following in the fis- cal year 1946-47: The Privy Purse (his personal in- come), £30,661. Household salaries and pensions, £134,000. Household expenses, £152,800. Royal bounty, alms and special services, £13,200. Accounts of these expenditures are audited by the exchequer. Until the restoration in 1661 all expenses of government, civil and military, © were met from royal revenues such as the rent. of crown lands and 'hereditary taxes aad rights. The decision then was made to distinguish between war expen- ses and civil establishments and government. In George III's reign elvil list expenditures were £10,030,000 com- pared with present £330,000 but from this sum were paid judges, ambassadors and other officials of state.
