It is about hidden treasure -- a fabulously-rich lode of diamonds, no less--which may be found with a smattering of geology, the ability to tap a few rocks with a small hammer and the stamina to spend the next few years in the northern wilderness looking for the rocks. The secret was imparted to us by an ancient and bearded professor at the international gathering of geologists held here this week and he placed the site of the lode "somewhere" in the wild country of Northern Quebec east of James Bay. The story of the diamonds goes back nearly 100 years to a time when people in the northern United States began finding high-grade diamonds on their farms and in their back yards. They still find them today, although in smaller quaintities. By geological reasoning, it was determined that the diamonds were -- | carried down from the northlands by the great five and six-mile-thick inched over this continent between 25,000 and 800,- 000 years ago.W Through a complicated process of charting the various areas where diamonds have been found and scratches left on the rockbed of the earth as they were carried by the gaciers, our geologist friend has de- termined that the diamonds came from the area east of James Bay. In that' region, he says, there must be a great treasure of dia- mond-bearing rock which will yield gems worth untold millions. He spent three months in the area this year and plans to go again next summer in another effort to un- earth the lode. Just in case you plan to embark tomorrow or next day on a dia- mond-hunting expedition, you might keep an eye open for black volcano rock. That apparently is the type which contains what geo- logists call diamond "pipe," the vein through which the diamonds run. > . The council took over the plant last February and now working in it are 1,000 skilled workers, half of them scientists. 'They are '""working at top speed to produce radioactive materials for countless uses in medical and industrial research and in the search for the newer knowledge which is fundamental tg scienti- fic progress," said the neil. As an example of the value of nuclear research, the council point- ed to the discovery this year of Dr. J. W. T. Spinks, now of the Uni- versity of Saskatchewan but for- merly on the staff of the atomic energy plant. Dr. Spinks found that phosphate fertilizer added to the soil at seed- ing accounted for 80 per cent of the phosphate 'taken up by wheat plants in the early stages of growth. He also showed that plants fertiliz- ed at seeding take up later a high- er percentage of plant foods from the surrounding soil than do unfer- tilized other plants grown in the same soil. These results were obtained by using radioactive phosphorus which served as a trace and could be photographed merely by bringing the plant in contact with a photo- graphic plate. - "Hundreds of similar new discov- eries must be expected to follow the use of radioactive materials," said the council. In other fields, research touched on industrial processes, food chem- istry, refrigeration, radar, aircraft, motion pictures, heating, lubrica- tion, textiles, rubber and construce tion. The review said there was still need for greater expansion both in government-sponsored research and by private enterprise if Canada was to maintain her rightful place among the manufacturing coun- tries of the world, It recalled that Dr, C. J. Mac- kenzie, president of the council, suggested recently that at least one per cent of the national income be used to advantage in the prosecu- tion of research. Half of the sum might be spent by governments, but at least an equal amount should be invested by industry in the application of science to the processing of Cana- das raw materials, sald Dr. Mac- kenzie, The review sald the council is I continuing with research into the development of by-products from grains, "Fermentation studies, which earlier prcduced butanediol from low grade wheat and surplus crops for use as anti-freeze and as a source material for numerous or- ganic chemicals, have been extend- ed," said the review. Cabinet Studies To Press Senate | To Give Dicision On Seaway Bill Washington, Jan. 3.--(AP)--Sen- ator exander 'Wiley (Rep.-Wis.) said Friday he has "definite assur- ances" from Senator Arthur Vane denberg, (Rep.-Mich.) that the lat- ter "will insist" that legislation authorizing the joint -Canada United States St. Lawrence Sea- way be placed before thie United States Senate this month for "final consideration." Wiley, chairman of a foreign re- lations sub-committee that held hearings on the much-debated legislation last spring, sald he sought the assurance from Vanden- berg. after* Senator Robert Taft (Rep.-Ohio), chairman of the Re- publican policy committee, failed' to include the measure on his list of "vital" legislation to be taken up at the regular session opening Jan, 6. Vandenberg, as presiding officer of the Sena te, is ex-officio a mem- ber of himself and 13 other - sen- behalf of himself and 13 other sen- ators, introduced the Seaway Bill. "We have fiddled around with told a reporter, "and it is absolute- ly outrageous and intolerable that the bill be delayed any further." Wiley sald that "from all indica- tions" the measure, if brought up, will pass the Senate. The measure authorized imposi- tion of tolls to make the half-bil- ion-dollar international project self-liquidating. In addition to ep- ening the Great Lakes area to oce- an-going shipping, . the proposal would permit creation of a 2,200,000 horsepower development in the In- ternational Rapids section of the St. Lawrence' River. Meanwhile, reliable congressional sources disclosed that Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (Rep.-Mass.) has completed the foreign rela- tions committee's minority report in opposition to the seaway. Lodge, one of the four members of the 13-man committee that vot- ed against endorsing the measure, will make the report public when the senate convenes on Jan. 6. The report, one source observed, "is a strong indictment of the pro- posed seaway in which Senator Lodge has made full use of all the argumenst at hs command." Should the measure succeed in winning Senate approval it will then go to the House of Represen- tatives where heaarings are yet to be .tompleted by the public works committee headed by representative George Dondero (Rep.-Mich.). Re- garding the measures fate before the latter group, Wiley said: "It appears .. .that (the) commit- mittee will vote for the bill."
