4 WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1947 It's no secret at all -- we're wishing one and all the ' merriest kind of Christmas and hap- plest New Year. 0 AR AS: (1) ) APY. P] 313 ALBERT ST. LIZA) 4 (ol 0) SE 94 KING W. GREETINGS ...to You and Yours! Along with our most sincere wishes for your Yule joy all of us want to thank you for your patronage in 1947. ' To All Mankind The Christmas Season revolves around the birthday of the Car- penter of Nazareth. Around this birthday have been woven the happiness of the human race, sym- bolized in the greetings of the] angel chorus: "On earth peace, and good will toward men." That these dreams have not yet been realized is true, but that the i struggling upward still be- lieves that they can be realized is also trye. It is this hopefulness of our common humanity which makes Christmas Day -- the birthday of the Carpenter of Nazareth -- the most cherished of all our holidays. Jesus of Nazareth walked this earth teaching the people of the land. These teachings fell afoul of those who then sat in the seats of the mighty. He taught the brother- hood of man, and told His disciples to pray "Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven." He held rout a goal of happiness during the lifetime of His followers, as well as happiness in eternity. This, in the eyes of the powerful of His own nation, was "sedition", that is, "arousing discontent among subjects." The Carpenter of Nazareth be- came a criminal when He de- nouneed the tyranny of the rulers. He said to those rulers: "Woe unto you, for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne and ye your- »selves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers." It was for this plain speaking that He was seized, brought before the courts and crucified. And from the Cross on Calvary, in the midst of His agony, came the greatest cry for tolerance recorded in 'his- tory: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." One of the poets in our day has written of the Carpenter of Nazar- eth: They called Him "fool" and "traitor" As through the land He went They cried out "agitator" And "brand of discontent." At length they seized and tried Him That they might have thelr will, And then they crucified Him High on yonder hill. The outcast "agitator" Driven by scourge and rod, They called Him "fool" and "traitor" And now we call Him God. At this Christmas of 1947, true peace does not rule over the earth, nor is there goodwill to all man- kind. We find hope, however, in the | ever-increasing number of people who are joining in the struggle for greater social democracy. People are struggling to achieve both in- dustrial and \political freedom = Each flicker of the Yuletide candles lights the: way for us to wish you a wonderful Christmas abundant with health, happiness and prosperity. And may we include in our greeting our sincere thanks for your appreciated patronage of the past year. We look forward to serving you in 1948. A Wis pel, I ------------------ » A Season's Greetings to Members and Friends of ALBERT STREET UNITED CHURCH May the spirit of our Lord inspire your Christmas- cele- brations, and goodwill fill your lives in the New Year. not only in our own land but in other lands. The journey of mankind toward the light has been a long and weary one, but, in each generation there have been those who can truthfully be called torch bearers. They have kept alight the torch of freedom and have handed it on to their successors. . Despite the troubled world upon which we look, we can wish for all our readers and for all the 'peoples of the world that, each year will bring an increasing desire for that freedom and that peace, in which we may truly celebrate a Merry Christmas and look forward for a Happier New Year.
