Net Paid Circulation Per Issue 7,91 5 Average NOVEMBER, 1947 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1947 Protecting Wildlife "At its annual meeting recently in Hamilton, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters had considerable to say about the rapidity with which game in Ontario is being de- pleted, while at London, Ontario, the Middlesex County Council voiced . the opinion that game wardens were "sleeping on the job". The anglers and hunters organization drew attention to {the fact that airplane hunters have become such a threat that even the Canada Goose is in danger of extinction. This fall, it was stated, planes carrying hunters flew 'over. the breeding grounds, driving the geese into the guns of the hunters. Hunters in planes are also flying into the moose country, killing these great beasts and flying out with the carcasses. The association urged the Provincial Government to halt all flying into the James Bay area by hunters and prohibition of all parties unless accompanied by a licensed guide. We do not subscribe to the ideas held by the Middlesex councillors as we know a number of the game wardens in this district and are sure that they are trying to do a good fob. The only difficulty is that they cannot be everywhere at once and too many hunters and fishermen, who have no 'thought for the future, take advantage of this fact. The Provincial Government which seems to be alive to the need for adequate protection is confronted with a real challenge . and should take immediate steps to prevent the indiscrimi- "nate slaughter of game and fish next year. Surprising Comeback Those who have visited Europe since the war have been e Readers' Views STREET CONDITION DEPLORED Editor Times-Gazette, Dear Sir: I note in your Column "50 Years Ago" that a horse wae almost bur- ied in a hole on King Street. It will not be surprising to see. the modern version of this news item appear in your paper any day now under the heading "Car Disappear- ed on King Street." Holes in the road on King Street are growing larger daily and have become a hazard to both motorists and pedestrians, and aside from untold damage to delicate car me- chanisms could be the cause of a tragic accident, the result of a car going out of control after hitting one of these holes and crashing on to crowded sidewalk killing or ser- fously injuring several people. Must Oshawa follow the example of the railways and wait until there have been a series of accidents before steps are taken to install safety devices or correct a public hazzard? When they do get around to fill- ing these holes why not fill in the tracks alo. Freight trains have no place on any city's main street. Our city is spending thousands of dol- lars on modern street lighting yet we still have our ancient system tracks. A front page article in your paper might arouse public interest enough to get some immediate ac- tion on these conditions. Yours very truly, C. W. Forde. 212 Gibb Street.
