Dr. Vojtech' Winterstein reports that 110,000 Slovakian Jews were exterminated during the war. Of M | the 30,000 survivors, he claims that 60 per cent have formally signified their desire to go to Palestine. "I'm going myself next year," Je "I'm through with Europe where people still mutter 'stinking Jew' behind my back." - Since the spring of 1945 he has supervised the departure of 1,500 Jews for the Holy Land where, he admitted, "most arrived illegally according to British regulations." Besides pleading the Zionist cause, Dr. Winterstein is engaged in fight- ing for complete restitution of for- w (mer Jewish property in Slovakia. He estimated the property's cur- rent replacement value was approx- imately $50.000,000 of which only 10 per cent had been restored to Jews. In 1942, he directed a clandestine Jewish intelligence service from the EY | Bratislava ghetto which collected the first authentic reports of the i) mass murder of Jews in Nazi camps in Poland." (Oswilecim, in South- DO | western Poland, was the most no- Bo | torious of these). The reports were so staggering to the civilized mind that foreign Jewish organizations waited several months before lending them cre- dence. Then they charged the L | German government with the larg- est massacres in history. Dr. Winterstein, who was arrested seven times, had been active mean- while in trying to save Hungary's Jews through ransoms paid to Himmler's Gestapo. At last sent to dreaded Theresienstad by the Germans, he was liberated a few months later in 1945, by the Soviet army. Friendly Slav-Bulgar Pact Seen Sofia, July 28--(AP)--Georgi Di- mitrov, Bulgaria's Communist pre- mier, said in an interview with the Athens Communist paper Rizos- pastis available here that Bulgaria in the "not distant future" would conclude a treaty of friendship, collaboration and mutual ald with Yugoslavia. He said Bulgaria had "sincere feelings and sympathies" toward Greece but suffered from constant border provocations, though she did "not interfere in Greek internal affairs." "The present neo-Fascist reaction, which by means of foreign aid caus- ed the Greek civil war," he declar- ed, "is a constant danger for Balkan peace." Dimitrov said that "not mutual ideological reasons but the vital and supreme national interests of Bul- garia dictate imperatively the clos- est friendship and co-operation with the Soviets." He pronounced himself convinced that the Slav countries together with what he called other forces of world democracy would be the mightiest "barrier against attempts to prepare a new war for world mastership of one or another im- perialistic country." 600 Persons Get X-Ray Tests At Lions Clinic PAULINE DELINE ndent Newcastle, July 19--Mr, P, Hare, president of the Newcastle Lion's Club, the executive and members, wish to thank the ladies who gave their time in carrying out the cleri- cal duties in connection wth the re- cent chest -Xray clinic sponsored by the Club.
