Anyone who likeg the way it looks but feels more comfortable in her old posture can get the ef- fect in a costume from one of the Spring collections, It's one de- signer"s newest silhouette. Big collars and almost no shoulder padding give the hunch- ed effect. The "hip hitch" ----. usually an abrupt jut on the pel- vic bone -- is strictly padding, It's rather fascinating on the models, none of whom appears to | measure more than an under- nourished boy at any given point. Collars, with or without hip tricks are the biggest other news in the collection which is notable for beautiful, ladylike detail and | a heavenly range of blues. (} Cut Like Cape Most prominent collar is cut like a cape and seamed to go | steeply uphill before it starts down. It stands high at the back of the neck and the sides and is | pushed away to frame the base of the throat in front, Other collars soften the shoul- der line but avoid the hunch-back look. A double sailor collar with a rippled edge is extended side- wise to cover the shoulders of a black wool suit. Other shoulders wear softening capes and fichu draperies, | In the stand-up category, but | modified to please any posture ad- mirer, are collars of two hand- some white linen shirts modeled | after the haberdashefy of a 19th century male. The collars are open, the shoulders unpadded and, in one case, extend over the tops of the arms in square tabs. Sleeves are long and full. One is trimmed with open-work medal- | lions which are repeated for the |§ look of cuff links on the sleeves. Hip Juts on Suits Abrupt hip juts are prominent only on suits, Dresses achieve the silhouette in modified form with | dirndl-like skirt gathers. And both have an alternate hipline-- completely slim and rather little- boy. | With the exception of the] dirndl fullness, skirts are tapered | to the hemline for a lean look. | There's a wrap-around coat with | a shallow diagonal buttoning to keep the hand off the tummy, There's one hobble skirt on an evéning dress in bachelor button | blue chiffon. It's frankly gather- ed all around, a few inches above the ankles. The flounce below gives some walking grace, The blues ran a range from a deep lovely glate--prominent in a wool suit with wide white linen revers and a hip hitch--through a brilliant evening sapphire to pal- est pastel. The latter is used in linen for one of the most beauti- ful dresses of the collection -- a summer afternoon dress with long waistline, dirndl skirt and long shirtwaist sleeves with collar, cuffs and down-the-front trim of white eyelet embroidery, Prettiest coats in the collection are fitted to the waist and have a crinoline swing to their taffeta or linen (combined in one black coat for stunning effect). One trick may prove the ans- wer to the dress with the hem that won't, let out. She bands some of her afternoon dresses in contrasting color for a slip-show- ing look. Delinquent Parents "A National Evil" London, March 17 -- (Reuters) -- Bad parental example is a prime contributory cause of juvenile de- linquency and amounts to "a na- tional evil," says Dr. Leslie Hous- den, chairman of the Parentcraft Teaching Committee. "Manyof these young thieves," he said, " go out on their depreda- tions straight from drinking their tea out of cups stolen from the lo- cal railway station." Because "the- joy of family life is not common knowledge today," much of the bitterness in national and international affairs stems from childhood unhappiness. If so, what style and color costume should she wear?" It is not considered correct wed- ding form to have your mother give you away. That honor should go to your mother's nearest male relative or the closest family friend. Your mother's costume would be governed by whether the wed- ding is church or home, formal or informal. Gray, lavender, del- phinium blue, -all are charming wedding colors, x x x Second Weddings: "I am a widow marrying a widower who is well known, well connected, a veteran of both wars with a decor- ation. My intended wants tbo be married in a dress suit. Does that mean I wear a long dress? Is it correct. for my grown-up daugh- ters to be' bridesmaids? How hould wedding a ts be worded? Is it correct for my daughters to have a shower for me?" Ordinarily, second marriages are informal but that is no reason why yours should be. If your groom wears a dress. suit, you should wear a long dress (not white). There is no reason why your daughters shouldn't attend you, but if I were you, I would turn the shower into a tea. Ryrie- Birks have the correct wording and rules for announcements, x x Xx Fragrant Tootsies: "This Is one of life's embarrassing moments, What causes too fragrant feet? What, cures them?" No situation is too bad when it can be remedied. Ostentatious feet often come from nervous strain. To alleviate that condition, it's plain food, plenty of sleep and lots of water. For the aroma, soak the feet night and morning in a solution of 3 teaspoonsful for- maldehyde and 5 quarts hot water, Dust the feet with disinfectant foot powder. Wash sox nightly with Lifebuoy soap. Soon the feet will smell like a rose. x x x Women are not wonderful: "You make me tired with your ever- lasting 'women are wonderful.' They are not! Women won't bear children, they won't work, they're selfish, vicious and weak, Stop trying to build up an imaginary goddess." Women are people and hence human. . There are selfish, vicious and weak people in the world, both men and women. But women keep up churches, they fight for prison reform, for adequate schools, they serve on hospital boards, they work for Jouth centres and, incidentally, ast year's baby crop was a bumper one, so they must be having children.
