/ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE = PAGE ELEVEN Quinte District 3-Day Seed Fair Starts Here Tomorrow Fair Gives Experience To Juniors For 20 years the Quinte Seed Show has provided a testing ground for Juniors in the Annual Seed Judging Competition, During that time nearly 800 budding seed ex- perts from the counties in the Quinte District, have tested their skill for the first time in a major seed judging competition. Contest- ants in former Seed Judging Com- petions now rank among the best farmers and showmen in the dis- trict, The present president of the Quinte Seed Show, as well as for- mer Presidents and other officers, secured their first interest in bet- ter seed through the Quinte Seed Judging Competition, Others have since graduated from Agricultural Institutions and are holding pro- minent positions in the Provincial and Dominion Departments of Ag- riculture, and in the commercial field. Due, credit must go to Col. R. Vandawater who was president for the first three years, and to his of- ficers, and to thé agricultural re- presentatives of that day for their, wise judgment in creating in jun- niors a lasting interest in the pro- duction of better seed and a con- tact with the Show by means of the Annual Seed Judging Compe- tition. The first essential to success in modern .farm practice, is to be a good judge. This is true both in live stock and farm crop produc- tion. In order to accomplish this, at least two esesntials are 'necessary. First, it is necessary to have an in- terest in or a liking for, live stock or improved crops. Secondly, it is necessary to carry in one's mind the ideal type of the live stosk Head Ontario County Fair LLOYD LEE H. L. FAIR The Ontario County Seed Fair will be held in conjunction with the Quinte Fair. Lloyd Lee of Seagrave is president of the Ontario County Fair while H. L. Fair, Ontario County agricultural representative, is secretary- treasurer of this fair and also secretary of the Quinte Fair. breed or seed variety, This can on- ly be acquired by constant practice and study of breed type whether it be in live stock or varieties of crops. The practice of judging in the Quinte Seed Competition and the previous training for that Com- petition, probably aroused the first interest in the contestants in good seed. It gave these youthful con- testants their first realization that there is just as much variation in size, color, plumpness, and quality in seeds as there are variations in type, capacity, size and value of live stock. Furthermore, many of the prizes offered in the Quinte Judging Com- [ 4 , petition have been in the form of Registered No. 1 Seed of the im- proved varieties. This in itself has been instrumental in the introduc- tion and distribution of improved varieties and a still further stimu- lation to the interest in better seed. The Quinte Seed Show Judging Competition has always been a pro- minent feature of the Show and as such, has played no small part in developing in the minds of hund- reds of young farmers, not only a loyalty to the fair but also an in- terest in the advantages of better | seed of improved varieties resulting in higher yields and better Agricul- ture over the whole area, Introducing Ca GENUINE PFISTER HYBRIDS to ONTARIO COUNTY and DISTRICT OUTSTANDING SILAGE CORN fl | ship, were sprayed. with COME IN AND SEE US {| ture in Eastern Canada is clearly AT Quinte District Seed Fair § | close to 10 million acres under hay DEALERS WANTED Raise All our chicks hatched from Government breeding stock! It is not surprising, therefore, that more and more attention is being 2iven to the methods of improving these crops, says F. N. Nowosad, Forage Plants Division, Central Ex- perimental Farm, Ottawa. Sowing the most suitable seed for a particular purpose under existing environmental conditions is an im- portant step in the improvement of | the production of hays and pastur- | The selection of a seed mixture | | for hay or hay-pasture will depend largely on the length 6f time the! | fleld is to remain seeded down. For example, some farmers follow a definite crop rotation, where the mixtures of grasses and legumes are used for one or two crops of hay before the field is used for pasture for one or two years. In such cases hay-pasture mixtures would be recommended and would be somewhat different from the mixtures: which are intended for a long-term pasture only, where no hay crops are to be taken. It should be borne in mind, how- ever, that no one mixture can be recommended to suit all purposes and under all conditions of soil, climate, etc. The following mix- ture may be regarded as a general basic recommendation for hay or hay-pasture (short-term) where al- falfa can be grown successfully: Timothy 6, alfalfa 6, red clover 6 and alsike 2 pounds per acre. Where alfalfa is no pted due to soil acidity or inadequate drainage then 'the following may be regarded as a general recommendation for hay or hay = pasture: Timothy 8, red clover 8, and alsike 3 pounds per acre, Udisitors!
