Associated with that move is the Republican platform promise to re- duce taxation by 20 per cent, Democrats who naturally want to support any move to cut costs of government, and just as naturally to see the Republicans embar- d, supported a house majority bo to reduce the budget by $$6,~ 000,000,000. But the leading republican Sena- tors who are wiser economically and politically than the majority, are heading a fight in that chamber to make the cut only $4,500,000,000. It all makes good reading for the taxpayer but as a matter of fact there is little likelihood that there will be any reduction--and therein lies the danger to the Republican party. Campaigners in the elections last fall boasted that the Republicans, if given control of Congress, - would drastically reduce public spending and also reduce taxes. Some of them said $20,000,000,000 could be lopped off the annual budget. Now they cannot fail to support in some measure the budget-cutting proposals no matter how much they feel it will be impossible of achieve- ment, Even 'if the budget is slashed by the higher or lower amounts pro- posed, the eventual spending by the end of the fiscal year, which co about convention time in 1 probably will exceed even the P " dent's original estimate. % Then the Republicans will be faow ed by facts of promises made and failure to carry them out, Elee= tions come every two years in thi country--too close together for the people to forget.
