Aim For 1947 Toronto, Feb. 12 -- (CP) -- Dele- gates to the annual meeting of the Ontario Crop Improvement Asso- ciation today pondered a suggested motto for 1947: ten more bushels of grain to the acre. This objective was suggested by Professor J. C. Steckley, chairman of the standing committee on field crop improvement, who asserted that the supply of coarse grains from the west would probably be smaller this year than last and that Ontario farmers should strive to produce more of this grain for use in feeding their livestock. He emphasized that responsibility for filling Canadian food contracts rested with farmers and food or- ganizations and added: "Our production in certain lines of agricultural products this year is most important. We have contracts to fill and if this is not done, some markets for Canadian agricultural products may be lost. This would be detrimental to the future of our agricultural program in the prov- ince of Ontario." 'Governments could not fill food contracts. This could only be done is | by farmers and farm organizations. and prayers follow inton in her work. Rediscover Caves In Aussie Desert and "catacombs" for 67 years. The party is headed b§ Capt. J. ALKALIZE AVOID DISCOMFORT OF ACID INDIGESTION "This is the year to produce a lot of items which will ensure increase in feed production on Ontario farms." 2 K. E. McNaught of the Ontario Department of Agriculture said im- ! proved farming conditions were im- portant in increasing production. "Bigger yields and better crops can best be obtained through crop improvement. Progress in crop im- provement is achieved through soil improvement and conservation, bet- ter cultural practices, more thor- ough weed control, improved vari- eties which are higher-yielding and disease-resistant, improved hay and pasture mixtures and better man- agement." Third Dimension Broadcasting Makes Strides By EDWARD CHANTLER Canadian Press Staff Writer "Third dimensional" sound re- production in broadcasting today is a practical reality . , , with in- finite possibilities, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation recently demonstra- ed to a concert studio audience latest techniques of "stereophonic reproduction" or "auditory per- spective." Putting aside technical terms, the unique part of the demonstra- tion was the illusion created whereby the studio audience was able to sense the special relation- ship between various instruments of a symphony orchestra. For purpose of the experiment, two microphones, spaced about 20 feet apart, picked up the sym- phony being played at Massey Hall, Toronto. The sound was fed through two separate high-qual- ty circuits which in tun fed two special speakers in the con- cert studio. Thus, as the violins took prom- inence, it appeared as though their tones came from the left side of the stage. When the cellos took up their throaty refrain they seemed to-sound from the right hand side, Woodwinds appeared to be loc- 'ated in the approximate centre of the stage, with rumbling percus- sions being obviously located near the stage rear. Engineers said that such local- izations are impossible under con- ditions where a single channel is employed regardless of its qual- ity of reproduction, Listeners were asked to remem- ber that most forms of sound re- production--radio, phonograph, or sound motion picture used a single channel. Subsequently, the sound heard is one-dimensional, with listeners obtaining a limited illusion of sound perspective, par- ticularly of music. On ordinary home receiving sets under present broadcasting conditions, listeners hear a range with an upper limit of less than 5,000 cycles, Frequency response used n stereo demonstration was 15,000 cycles. In other words, the actual volume range of Massey Hall. High-fidelity transmission, us- ed with stereo channels, is of lit- tle value if reproducing speakers Apply, Rinse and Shine! 32 KING ST.
