THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1947 | Si 2a FLIGHT LINE Lee By A Burr The heavy snow falls experienced during the past few weeks would lead one to believe that all air- craft have been grounded. One of the most important bits of information garnered from the re- cent Annual Meeting of the Royal Canadian Flying Clubs Association held in Ottawa was the fact that the 42 member clubs in the Associa- tion flew an aggregate of 30,000 flying hours during 1946 represent- ing 2,550,000 air miles, with no fatal accidents, Continuing from our lesson in words of last week we progress to the second flight in our series prior to soloing. After a thorough de- monstration with the aid of a mod- el aircraft in the flight lounge, you proceed to the Aeronca you flew on the last trip for a lesson that is go- ing to show you "how the aircraft works." The instructor will show the simple effect of the elevators in the pitching plane--how the nose rises and the airspeed falls off -- the nose sinks towards your feet and the airspeed builds up. He will also show you how the aircraft is banked by the use of ailerons and how the use of rudder produces a swing of the nose towards the wing- tip. It will also be pointed out that the faster you go the more sensitive the controls, the slower the speed the more sloppy. During these demonstrations, you wil] be following through on the controls, then afterwards you will try out the various effects yourself, The aircraft is flown by the smooth co-ordination of all three controls and that is why you are shown how each works separately 80 that when it comes time to co- ordinate their use, you will under- stand the action of each individual- When teaching a person to drive & car 'you start by first explaining the function of the clutch, gears, and steering wheel then through the smooth co-ordination of all these, a person would learn to drive--at first inexpertly, but as more experience is gained, the smoother the driver becomes will be used in a num- sequences later in the it is imperative that the effect of controls be fully under- stood. Getting back to our socia] news the week we find the General Motors Badminton Club proved to 'more expert than our pigeons to e extent of winning 10 games to at last Friday's matches, Wetnesday, February 19. An excel- lent program consisting of a speak- er and a full length feature mov- fing picture will make up an even- ing of real enjoyment for all mem- bers and their friends. TomorrowTheDay Cupid Holds Sway Dan Cupid, the sprightly tyke with the insecure sarong--and quiver full of money sighs--once again mixes historical fact with fiction tomorrow.to usher in St. | Valentine's Day. And he'll not be any more mix- ed up than most modern men's unromantie, dry-as-dust-probers into 'the antiquity of the ancient feast day of the world's swains and swooning maids, Myriad stories have been woven by poet, historian--and promot- ers of lacy, lush greeting cards-- about the origin of the bow-and- arrow armed Kid's big day. Some say St, Valentine was one of the eight historically-obscure saints, mentioned by early chro- niclers. Others, more specific, say tomorrow is named after a Chris- tian youth who in 270 A.D, was be headed at the Flaminian Gate in Rome by the impetuous Emper- or Claudius II, , Searchers among pagan lore ¢laim the day coincides with the Feast of Lupercalia, a Roman fes- tival of spring, which was held in honor of the gods' own darlings --Pan,and Juno, The Romans, it is said, set as- ide fretting empire troubles and grisly toss 'em-to-the-lions circus amusements that day to fete lov- ers. And, early Roman settlers in Britain carried on observance of the day, In Scotland, the 18th century lassie celebrated a type of "Sadie Hawkins" day Feb, 14. When "captured" by his fleet footed Highlander miss, Jock re- mained "hers" for the balance of the year. Naturalists, too, have an oar in the discussion. A few say that, in the balmier parts of the globe, birds were supposed to mate on Feb, 14 or 15. However, history, fact or fic- tion--tomorrow's the day when shy approaches take a back seat and faint hearts take strength to quiver: "Will you be my Valentine" TRY "THIS TONIGHT @ Do what thousands are doing to wake up smiling each morning and say bright all day. Dick Hearing Is Now Set For Feb. 24 Hamilton, Feb. 13.--~ (CP) -- re- sumption of Supreme Court consid- eration of charges arising from the murder of John Dick, 40-year-old Hamilton Street Railway employee, whose torso was found on the mountainside near Mount Albion net March 16, will start Feb, 24, it le court house officials were "mum" about the date of the hear- ing of the much-delayed trials, To- ronto sources said that the court would again deal with the charges concerning the John Dick murder, and that of the infant, Peter Dayid White MacLean, a week from Mon- day. Those charged with the John Dick murder are his widow, Mrs. Evelyn Dick, 26, who after she was convicted last October was granted a new trial by the Ontario Court of Appeal; her father, Donald Mac- Lean, and friend, Willlam Bohozsk. Mrs. Dick, at one time under sentence of death for the murder of. her husband, also is charged with Bohozuk with the "baby murder." These charges were laid during in- vestigation of the murder of John Dick, when a cement-filled suitcase containing an 'infant's body was discovered by police. Little was known today of the Crown's method of procedure con- templated for Feb. 24--whether or not the'trials of all three would be proceeded with joinily. This morn- ing, however, a telegram was re- ceived by Attorney-General Leslie Blackwell from Crown Attorney McCulloch, K.C., informing him of the date set 'by Mr. Justice J. C. McRuer, Chief Justice of the High Court of Ontario. This development came after the decision of Justice Robert Tasche- reau that the Supreme Court of Ca- nada should not hear the appeal of the Attorney-General against the Ontario Court of Appeal's ruling by which Mrs, Dick was granted a new trial. The two men were scheduled to be tried in January when the Crown sought an adjournment so that the Supreme Court might be given an opportunity of reviewing the decis- ion of the Ontario Appeal Court, Mr. Justice J. Keiller Mackay made the adjournment but said the ac- cused should be brought to trial "at the earliest possible time."
