Instead of summonses, police chief Horace V. Grayson has equipped his officers with red and green Christmas cards bearing a request to obey local ordi- nances. * Bb BH Miami, Fla.--Thomas ' Baird, 86, veteran of more than half a century of work on newspapers in Europe and America, died here in hospital. Baird, who re- tired from the Miami Herald copy desk in 1940, was born in Londonderry, Ireland, in 1860. He worked on p pers in Scotland and London before settling in Chicago in 1891, * "Kyoto--Mrs. oth Oichi, one of the first women elected to the Diet, is campaigning for mayor of this ancient capital of Japan on the slogan: "Equal sake and tobacco ra- | tions for the women of Kyoto." Only Japanese mex, are allotted such ra- ns. +* +* Los Angelo men were evicted from their quarters be- neath the city hall steps yester- day, health officer George M. Uhl reported. They had been occupying the quarters for months, he said, cooking over an alcohol stove, sleeping on gunny sacks, and judging by the large number of empty bottles, drink- ing a lot of ite and whisky, * Hamilton. --Bdward Mantle's hob- by concerns a field in which he has little or no competition--seismology, or the study and recording of earth- quakes. Probably the only amateur seismologist in Canada, Mantle built a recording machine which register- ed the recent 'quake in Japan. His records have often been used and published by the Dominion Observa- tory in Ottawa. * * Herford, Germany.--Twe hun- dred car drivers serving at the headquarters of the intelligence" and legal divisions of the con- trol commission in the British zone of Germany decided at a meeting last night to stop work until further notice unless they were assured by mid-day today of adequate heating facilities for their billets and mess, The Brit- ish zone was shivering as ther- mometers read 20 degrees. * Hamilton. -- The only difficulty General Hospital authorities here are having with Felix Wilson as a patient is keeping him still long enough to get better--and he is 94 years old. Temporarily incapacitat- ed by slight injuries in a recent car accident, he is eager to get back to his home on the street where he is constantly being held up as an ex- ample to younger husbands. Mr. Wilson is always the first to take out M | ashes, cut the lawn and shovel his sidewalk, while his 91-year-old wife does all her own housework. Built In Ice For Super-craft Boston, Dec. 28'-- (AP) -- New sup- ersonic airplanes flying in the in- tense cold of the upper atmosphere may need built-in refrigeration to keep the pilots from roasting, Brig.- Gen. Malcolm C. Grow told the American Association for the Ad- vancement of Science. ; The army air forces surgeon ex- plained it is estimated supersonic speeds -- above the 750-mile-an- hour level -- may generate such heat from air friction against the skin of the airplane that cockpit temperatures will rise to 300 degrees. Wire Rate Up 10 p.c. in U.S. Washington, Dec. 28 -- (AP) -- Telegraph message rates in the Un- ited States soon will go up. about 10 per cent. The increase for the Western Union Telegraph Company was au- thorized today by the Federal Com- munications Commission in a five- to-one decision. The increase, covering full rate, day letter, might letter, seridl and press messages, will yield around $8,500,000 in revenue annually, the commission said. Western Union, which can put the higher rates into effect one day af- ter filing revised tariffs with the commission, proposed to increase its rates for services bet the United States and Canada, Lab- rador, Newfoundland - and Pierre- Miquelon. The commission deferred action on the: proposals, 1 Yank in Six Has Worms, Scientist Says Boston, Dec. 28 -- (AP) -- A scientist who studies parasites said today that "this wormy world" had better turn on the worm. Dr. Norman R. Stoll of the feller Institute of Medical Rese: said in an address marking his tirement as president. of the Am erican Society of Parasitologists that "about one in six Americans is harboring garbage worms."
