DECEMBER 19, 1945 They Listen -- For A Change ""THOSE THREE' LEAD BRUINS TO WIN OVER RANGERS; CHIHAWKS FLY HIGHER THAN RED WINGS By JACK MITCHELL Press Staff Writer If sharing makes Buddies, then the name selected in a Boston con- test for the favorite forward line of their National Bruins looked considerably sharper today. Hockey League Headline writers generally - drop- ped the tag like a hot-cake right after the rechristening ceremonies last season. The "Kitchener Kids" label seemed better to describe the rugged trio it denoted. But the Bruins' big three of Milt Schmidt, Bobby Bauer and Woody Dumart showed the spirit of buddies last night in the dividing the Boston goals one aplece as the Bruins came through with a 3-2 victory over New York Rangers. They Stick Together 'That division'continued the same pace the trio has set all season in keeping the Bruins in a contending spot. The scoring statistics show both Schmidt and Bauer with 11 goals each and Dumart with one Schmidt, the lanky centre of the trio who returned from the R.CAF. part way through last season, stole the headlines at Boston last night by scoring his goal with but 17 sec- onds to play. Besides avoiding the eighth tie for the Bruins in 22 games, that tally enabled the team to lessen their margin behind the second-' place Montreal Canadiens, idle last night along with the leading Tor- onto Maple Leafs, Hawks Blast Red Wings 'The loss caused no change in New York's standing as Detroit Red Wings, tied with the Rangers for fourth place, took a 5-2 pasting from the cellar-dwelling Chicago Black Hawks in the only other match. For the Hawks, the victory mark- ed the first since Nov. 27. In that eight-game stretch, the only other point they picked up was in a score- less draw with the same Red Wings. The Hawks finally looked like a big league team as they opened up a two-goal lead in the first period, held it when each scored once in the second session, and outscored the Red Wings 2-1 in the final period. Bill Mosienko was the leading Chicago sharpshooter with two goals. Defenceman Johnny Mari- ucei, forward Max Bentley and rookie Ralph Nattrass each got one. For Detroit Pete Horeck and Ed- die Bruneteau did the scoring. Besides his own tally, Schmidt participated in both his linemates' goals at Boston to climb into fourth place among the league's individual marksmen with his 11 goals and 13 assists, Bauer started the Bruins off with a tally, but veteran Bryan Hextall gave the New Yorkers this one back' in the first period. Grey-haired Neil Colville New |Sian; York into a 2-1 lead in the second. but Dumart made it 2-2 at 7:10 of the third period. With 17 seconds to go, Schmidt whacked home Bauer's pass for the victory. Hope and Bing Crosby, who usually keep up a running fire of gags when they get together, seem to be stopped for once as interrupts their golf and conversation on the Inglewood By Geo. H. Campbell PORT NAPSHOTS Oshawa Generals vaulted into second place, one notch above the Galt Red Wings who were idle last night, when they took a well-earned 4-2 victory last night in Stratford over the Kroehlers, who definitely were playing to win. The Gens have made a much better showing since losing that game in Hamilton, proof of a couple of things, namely that they really don't want to be refused that trip to Brandon next month and secondly, that a little stern criticism and harsh comment never goes amiss, as long as the boys on the receiving end, whether merely Juniors or not, have sufficient intelligence to know that criticism is deserved and have sufficient ambition and "get" to go out and do something about it. That win right in Stratford last night stamps the Generals once more as strong contenders for O.H.A. honors, regardless of the fact that St. Mike s are still admitted, at this stage, to be the class of the league. Now it the Oshawa boys will just stick to business and not get too cocky about a couple of victories, they can still improve a great deal more yet. As a matter of fact, they can win right in Galt this Saturday night, it they watch their step. "> * +» * Last night at Stratford, the Generals played a sound, orthodox brand of hockey. The Curik-Cerisino-Blair line was again to the fore. After a scoreless period, Stratford took the lead and then within one minute, Oshawa moved in front 2-1. Curik tied it up on Blair's play then Blair scored with the help of Curik and Cerisino. After Stratford's Roth had tied it at 2-2 midway through the 3rd frame, Ike Hildebrand scored the winning goal on Bauer's pass and then Cerisino banged in Curik's rebound in the dying minutes of play to clinch it. Curik, with a goal and two assists, came up with his second good game of the season and perhaps now has found his stride. Samis and McKay again played well on defense while Crowdis was a standout in the nets. No injuries were sustained and the team will be in top shape for the go at Galt on Saturday, * * + * In the other O.H.A. Junior tilt last night, Marlboros won a 4-point decision up in Barrie. That puts the Dukes ahead of Barrie in the standing and sets the stage for Saturday's games, when Barrie visits St. Mike's and Windsor visit Marlboros for another 4-point tussle. While the Generals are leading Galt by two points, they'll have to win in Galt on Saturday night to stay ahead of the Red Wings. Galt has played a couple less games than Oshawa too. Galt goes to Stratford a week from tomorrow nignt with Stratford right back at Galt the following aight. In those two games, Galt will have a chance to retake 2nd place while Stratford will have a chance to get right back into the thick of the race for the top berths. Meanwhile, keep your eye on those fast- improving Marlies. Gen- erals were full value for their win, but were smiled on by Lady Luck on several occasions when Lou Crow- dis managed to get a small piece of his equirment on the flying disc as Krohelers closed in with what ap- peared to be certain goals. Both Miss Chances Both teams missed many good chances to score mainly because of the excellent checking of the de- fences. Smoothier finish of Generals apt greater accuracy with their ots rrovided the margin of victory. Lou Crowdlis, blond thatched Gen- eral cage tender, turned in a bril- liant effort in the Oshawa goal, and but for his fine playing Kroehlers would have made it even closer and might possibly have eked out a win, Kroehlers clearly outplayed the winners for minutes on end in the dying minutes of the game and re- peatedly closed in on the Oshawa goal, only to have Crowdis manage to get some corner of his equipment on the flying disc and deflect it into a corner. From start to finish, both teams went at each other with a will that brought sticks up early in the tilt end kept them up throughout. Re- feree "Red" Dunn sent only 10 to the sin bin but he might have made it twice as many. Two Quick Goals Generals came from behind to score their victory, counting twice within @ minute in the second Yer- iod, after a scoreless first session. Kroehlers went into the lead on a goal by Billy Flick. Wayne Ser- vice started the play and passed to Roth at the Generals blue line. Mickey hit the defence and relayed the disc to Flick who made no mis- take in drilling the rubber pept Crowdis, Only 23 seconds later, Generals roared back, Leo Curik converting Charlie Blair's pass as the former stood uncovered in front of McGratton, One minute later, the Generals went into the lead and were never headed. This time, Char- lie Blair got the pay-off, on a play which Roy Ceresino and Curik en- gineered. Blair got the puck at the Kroehler defence and let fly with a high hard one that had McGrat- ton beaten all the way. As the third period opened, both teams really turned on the speed and play swept from one end to the other with Kroehlers having a slight edge. Their efforts were fi- nally rewarded at the 12.44 mark when Mickey Roth took a pass from Wayne Service, after a face-off in the Generals' zone, and skated in front of the net to beat Crowdis with a backhand shot. Hildeb-and Does It With both teams going wide open, and both goals being threatened time and again, Generals finally got the break that won the game. Ike Hildebrand was the hero of the piece, being set up perfectly by Don Bauer, Bauer broke away at centre ice all alone but Hildebrand came up fast and took Bauer's pass through the Kroehler defence to coast in and flip the rubber by the helpless McGratton. It was one of the best goals of the night.
