His driving and ownership licenses were suspended under the ruling of the Department of Highways. hTe charge arose from the ac- cident on Thursday night when the car driven by Henderson sideswiped a heavily loaded transport, causing it to jacknife and overturn, block- ing the main highway. Damage to the transport was estimated in court at approximately $2000, and the ac- cused's car was badly smashed along the left side. Chief J. W. Elliott stated that the debris from the accident was at least three feet north of the white line on the Dundas Highway, in- |dicating that Henderson, who was | headed east, was over in the centre of the road. "Worst Possible Menace" "Drivers who for some reason or another come three or four feet over the white line are the worst kind of menace possible on a high- way, particularly, as here, at a subway," said Crown Attorney A. C. Hall. Henderson told the police that he had been blinded by approach. ing headlights and had not seen the transport, which was loaded with eight tons of steel. The col- lision sheared the front trailer spring, putting the trailer out of control and causing it to, jacknife just past the subway. "I see no reason why the max- imum penalty should not be im- posed," said Magistrate F. S. Ebbs in imposing the $50 fine. A second charge of reckless driving was with- (drawn, Henderson was represented by R. D, Humphreys, K.C. Too Much She staggered into her neighbor's house, "A drop of brandy," she gasped. Crulk- shank, of no listed address, was fined $100 and costs, or three months in the county jail, sen- tences to run concurrently. Evidence showed that the accus- ed, who pleaded guilty, had pur- chased permits on December 10 and 11 at Belleville under two Jarvis Street addresses, and then two more on December 13 in Whitby and Oshawa, giving different ad- dresses each time. Cruikshank said that he had been intoxicated when he bought the permits. He will serve the three month term. Merrickville Fire Damages Church Merrickville, Dec. 18--(CP)--Fire yesterday destroyed the Merrickville United Church steeple and did conk siderable damage to the belfry and minister's office. The blaze was be- lieved to have been caused by a spark from a chimney fire in a building about 90 feet away. Firemen said they were hindered by lack of equipment, some' of the town's hose and pumps having been left at Smith Falls Monday, where the Merrickville crew aided in bat- tling a $200,000 blaze which destroy=- ed the Kerfoot apartment and re- tail store building, Ret: the assistance, mem-« bers of the Smith Falls department helped in the final stages of putting out the United Church fire.
