St. Kitts Mayor Honorarium Up St. Catharines, Dec. 18. --(CP)-- City council last night voted to ing crease the annual honororium paid the mayor of St. Catharines to $2,- 500, effective in 1947. The honorarium paid this year and for some years previously, has been $1,500. The original propesal was to increase the honorarium to $2,000, effective this year, but af- ter consideration, the honorarium was increased $1,000, payable nex! year. HORN Correspondent Hampton, Dec. 14--The attend- ance at the Young People's Union on Friday night was somewhat smaller than usual. The President was in the chair and opened the meeting with the hymn "I Need Thee Precious Jesus" followed by prayer. A short business session followed in which several items were discussed and committees ap- pointed in charge of various details regarding the Christmas concert, and other activities. Audrey Kersey conducted the worship service which opened with a Christmas hymn "There's a Song in ThenAir", Muriel Crawford read the Scripture lesson, Luke 4, 16-21. Madlyn Wilcox presented the devo- tional topics which contained help- ful thoughts. Yvonne Williams ded in prayer. Harold Quarry presided for the program in the absence of the Vice President. A Christmas hymn was sung. Ted Kersey gave a reading; Annabelle Adcock and Jean Kersey sang a duet, "A White Christmas"; Mrs, Harold Salter presented some interesting stories of Life and Christmas in a mining town Flin- Flon, -in Manitoba, also of Christ- mas in Madrad, India; Madlyn Wil- cox favored with a piano solo and an appropriate closing hymn was sung followed by the Mizpah bene- diction. CHARLES WHITE Correspondent Thornton's Corners, Dec. 16.--The monthly meeting of the Home and School Association was held Wed- nesday evening, December 11 in the school. The president, Mrs. Mollon, conducted the meeting which open- ed with all singing Home an School theme song, During the business it was point- ed out that recreational equipment was needed badly for the school children. So it was decided to hold dances every two weeks, the first one to be held January 10, and the proceeds of these dances to go to- ward rink and other equipment. Program committee for the dances was appointed, Chas. White, Mrs. Doug Lander and Miss Erma Hall. Mrs. Pipher took charge for the program. Several Christmas carols were. sung. Orma Flemming was soloist for the evening and render ed three numbers "Danny Boy", "Old Lamplighter" and "White Christmas" accompanied at the pi- ano by Mrs. Fisher, Rev. H. F. Davidson gave a very educational and interesting address using as his subject "Making De- mocracy Work", He toki a little of the government cf Italy, West Afri- ca, North Africa and England as he found it in his travels as chap- lain during the war. He brought out these special points: To make de- mocracy work we must know how things are being done, must sub- mit and then co-operate and must have sense of responsibility. Dr. Cornett emphasized that the value of a life of service was taught by Christ who practised service to His fellow-men more than any other man. He maintained the value of human life is gauged by the service men render to others, Continuing, Dr. Cornett referred to the great work which had been done for crippled children in this community by the late Leonardd Richer who for many years served as chairman of the Rotary Club's Crippled Children's Committee. He said that he had gxeyipiifieq in the highest degree a life tevoted to the service of others, He felt sure that Mr, Richer's spirit was with this particular gathering. The program included & puppet show presented by John Lin; im- personations and ventriloquism by Connie Laidlaw and dance numbers by the Carrol sisters.
