~ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1946 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE LET'S ALL GO TO CHURCH REGULARLY Message of Love SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1946 By NEWMAN CAMPBELL (The International Uniform Les- son on the above topic for Dec. 22 is Luke 2:8-20; John 3:16; 1 Corin- thians 13; Ephesians 3: 14:21, te Memory "Verse being Luke 2:14, "Glory to God in the highest.") THIS LESSON can best be in- troduced by quoting from the love- ly story St. Luke tells us about the birth of Jesus. It is a story we tell or read over and over each Christ- mas, It is old, but ever new and thrilling, "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. "And lo, oH angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. "And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings. of great joy, which shall be to all people. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. "And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrap- ped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heav- enly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. "And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. "And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. "And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this Child. "And all they that heard it won- dered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. "But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. "Aad the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them." At this time of the year we should think of all the happy things that have come to the world in the com- ing of the Christ Child. Even the most sincere and earnest Christians, followers of Christ, are far from perfect, and the world is in a per- iod of unrest, uncertainty and suf- fering. But the spirit of Jesus, born at Bethlehem so long ago, is still at work making the world a better place, and giving everyone hope that His gospel will eventually pre- vail in spite of everything, and bring on earth peace, good will to- ward men." Message of Love Christ's message was one of love, and at this Christmas season, love and good will is always in evidence, even hard hearts softening. "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoso- ever believeth in Him should not perish, 'but have everlasting life." We also have Paul's great sermon on love in our lesson, in his first epistle to the Corinthians. "Though I speak with the tongues of men |- and of angels; and have not love, I am becoming as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal, "Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is mot puffed up. "Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; ; "Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but re- | joiceth in the truth. "Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. "Love never faileth; but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whefher there be know- ledge, it shall vanish away." "And mow abideth faith, hope, charity (or love), these three; but the greatest of these is love." Christ, in His life 'on earth, loved | The Golden Text : The angels and the shepherds. New Commander Salvation Army Arrives Dec. 16 Toronto, Dec. 14--Returning to the country where he spent seven of his boyhood years, Commission- er Charles Baugh, new Salvation Army Territorial Commander for Canada, is due in Toronto, Monday, December 16, according to Col. Arch. Layman, acting Commission- er and chief secretary for Canada. Owing to an injury suffered by Mrs. Baugh, who fell in her Lon- don home and broke a leg, Com- missioner Baugh's departure for Canada was delayed. The new Territorial Commander had hoped to be able to bring Mrs. Baugh with*him, but he was forced to let her remain in hospital. A great welcome has been plan- ned in Toronto, Territorial Head- quarters, for Commissioner Baugh. A public meeting will be held in the Toronto Temple the evening of De- cember 16 which will be attended by Salvationists and friends. Sev- eral well-known public figures have accepted invitations to take part. Commissioner Baugh's parents were Salvationists and they were in Canada during his boyhood, He spent his years from five to twelve in this country, attending school. Beginning his life work at London headquarters as an office boy in January, 1895, the new Territorial Commander went to British India as a missionary officer in 1915, re- maining until 1929. Returning to headquarters duty, he became Chief of the Staff in October, 1943. His appointment to the Canadian com- mand was: announced by General Albert Orsborn, CBE. Salvation Army world leader, coincidentally with the appointment of Commis- sioner Benjamin Orames, former Canadian Commander, to the post of international secretary for the British Dominions, the United States and South America.
