PAGE EIGHT THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 194¢ ' PORT :.. ) NAPSHOTS Convics Oshawa Generals managed to defeat Stratford Kroehlers here on Saturday night but it was just by the skin-of-their-teeth, you might say. Kroehlers trotted out a big and effective line in the threesome of Whar- ton, Mickoski and Robertson and their performance indicated quite clearly that the Kroehlers are going to be mighty tough to beat hefcre the season is over, We also like the hard-working efforts of young Mitchell, their 16-year-old defenseman (No. 3) who went to Stratford from Port Dal- housie, He showed willingness to mix it with all comers when it came to battling for a loose puck and his blocking was effective. According to Stratford srcibe, "Chick" Appel, George Robertson, star of last year's Memorial Cup Winnipeg Monarchs, hasn't been going too well yet but he certainly was effective against the Generals on Saturday night alhough ot that, we thought Mickoski was the hardest worker of all, LJ Ld L 4 &® Joe Primeau's undefeated St. Mike's will visit Oshawa on Wed. nesday night, after chalking up another easy win on Saturday after- noon, Up in Galt, they are already figuring that this year's "Irish" will eclipse that 18-game winning. string established by last year's Red Wings, Some fans are hoping that the visit to Oshawa this Wed- nesday might prove a stumbling block to St. Mike's but while we fully expect our Generals to give the Students a real battle for the honors, we can not forget that th h always play ptionally well on Oshawa ice and on what we saw Saturday night, the Generals aro not quite ready to hand St. Mike's their first defeat of the -eason, For one thing, the forwards are not passing the puck enough, the right-wingers: especially. They seem to be on hand to get a pass O.K. but they then elect to try the rest of the way all alone, instead of. putting variety into the attack, by making return passes once in a» while, McCauley's weakness in the nets in the second period gave 'the Generals a couple of easy tallies on Saturday night and Stratford got one off Curik's body that Crowdis couldn't see. Those soft tallies had a big bearing on the game, for the visitors were definitely better than Oshawa in the third period. : + # + * Referee Kennie Holmeshaw didn't hesitate when the boys started out early with the rough stuff, high sticks, slashing, boarding etc. A 7.man parade to the penalty box quickly quelled the smouldering fire and the two teams stuck to their knitting after that, Don Bauer was very effec- tive for the Generals. He played good hockey, both on the attack and with his checking. Phil Samis continues to stand out as one of Oshawa's best, when he wants to play hockey and leave the elbows and high-sticks |) out of his checking. His speedy rushes were a constant threat. Crowdis | was in good form and had to be, for the visitors pressed hard in the third | period. The Generals haven't yet started to flash much in the line of ; plays, once they get past the red line. Back in their own end, they bring the puck out with some semblance of organized system but' after that, they show little passing skill except during brief "ganging acts" at which they do seem to have improved greatly in recent weeks. KA + LJ * Other Junior hockey results of the week-end were much as ex- pected. 86 Mike's and Galt both won their games at the Gardens on Saturday afternoon. After. being held to a surprise tie 2-2 right in their own ice Friday night by St. Catharines, the Barrie Flyers went back to St. Kitts on Saturday night and thumped the Falcons to cling to second place. Marlboros won over Windsor Spitfires but the homes. ters made a better showing than usual at that. Young Rangers go to Hamilton tonight to play for 4 points and tomorrow, Galt and St. Kitts are at it, in St, Catharines. LJ + * * The N.H.L. results of the week-end all fade into insignificance in the face of that terrific 11-0 lacing the Leafs handed Chicago Black Hawks, Bill Ezinicki, the 22-minute penalty victim of the game in Chicago earli- er in the week, scored three goals on Saturday night. Maybe he received a "pep talk" eh? Paul Bibeault, told Wes McKnight on Saturday night's interview, that one of his worst nights in goal was against Canadiens in Stanley Cup playoffs a few seasons back. He must have a new "record" now! There were some other N.H:L. surprises t00, but they aren's worthy of any special mention here. f LJ L LJ W Harold Luke of Oshawa was again named President of the On- tario Minor Hockey Association, at the 13th annual meeting of that up-and-coming hockey organization, held this last week-end in Torone to. This group usually keep their president in twp terms, which is an excellent idea, as long as they keep picking competent men, as they have in been doing in recent years. A presid ina 1 organi tion such as a hockey group, usually just gets to know the ropes when they make a change. In two years, he has a chance to make his own personal and valued contribution. The O.M.H.A. is much larger than ever and getting stronger each season, > LJ * ye Toronto Argos won the Dominion rugby championship again on Sa- turday. Winnipeg Blue bombers started out well but once the passes started to fly, it was all over. Krol and Copeland were terrific and when they reversed proceedings and had Copeland toss one to Krol, it was as nice a play as we've seen. Krol faked two steps to his own right, then swung to the left, looked up and the ball was waiting for his hands. Copeland threw it deliberately to Krol's left, when the two steps to the right were being made. Argos' passing was sensational throughout. Their play in the final quarter that should have netted a touchdown was one of the longest seen at Varsity Stadium. Bombers had the fans with them, in their bid to avoid a shutout. It was also one of the cleanest Dominion finals we've ever witnessed. Argos had the power all down the line to protect their forward passes and that is definitely their big weapon. +> * oo TONIGHT, there's an Intermediate "A" O.H.A, game at the Oshawa Arena and local puck fans who have started to show increasing interest in the local "Legionnaires" will be on hand to take in this contest. St. Catharines' "Moose" will be the visiting opposition and while the Legion boys handed St. Kitts quite a licking her last Monday night, things should be differy:t tonight, On Friday, Brantford Redmen come to Oshawa and the Legion players say that Brantford has the team to beat for group championship laurels. Junior "A" loop would be a very close race indeed. Arrayed nine points or so behind the unbeat- en Irish are five earnest young teams separated by a single point in their battle for second place. As the Collegians play up to Sat- urday's form -- they whipped Ham- liton Szabos 12-2 at Maple Leaf Gardens without noticeable strain-- opposing coaches would be best em- ployed praying for soft ice or a breakdown of train connections the next.time Joe Primeau's boys hit a brisk battle in progress for the number two spot. Barrie in Second Spot In sole possession at the moment are Barrie Flyers, by virtue of an { 8-3 victory over the Falcons in St. Catharines. Tied for third place a point behind them are Stratford Kroehlers, Oshawa Generals, Toron- to Marlboros and Galt Red Wings. The winless Falcons, who tied the Flyers in Barrie Friday night, prov- ed just as troublesome Saturday be- fore they folded before a five-goal onslaught in overtime. The Flyers had to pull their goaltender to tie the score with six seconds of regu- lation time remaining. ,Murray Fife, who got the all-im- portant tying marker, paced the winners' attack with three goals. Favero added two for Barrie and St. Plerre, Alkens and Barrett got the others. Mann, Twaddle and Wood blinked the light for the Falcons. Easy for Irish Ed Harrison and Warren Winslow were three-goal men for the Irish as they coasted to victory over Hamilton. Fleming Mackell and Migay got two apiece and Les Cos- tello and Benny Wait added the others. Pierre Cadeux and Bill Wy- synski counted for the Szabos. Galt Takes Y. Rangers In the other half of the twin bill at Toronto, Galt Red Wings got their piece of third place the easy way with a four-point victory over Toronto Young Rangers by a 6-2 score. The Rangers, spotting Galt three goals as the final period open- ed, rallied strongly with scores by Gord Cruikshank and Wally Sam- anski, but the Red Wings promptly sank three more to sew it up. Bill Scott scored two of the Galt goals. Bert Giesbrecht, Ron Cooney, Jim Uniac and Fred Glover got the others, An overtime goal by Johnny Mil- liard broke up the week-end's clos- est tussle at Oshawa, giving the Generals a 5-4 win over Stratford Kroehlers, The goal, Milliard's second, finished off a neat passing play with Don Bauer and Ike Hil- debrand. Bauer, Eric Pogue and Phil Samis were the other Oshawa goal-getters in a game that saw the Generals pile up a 4-1 lead early in the sec- ond period only to have the Kroeh- lers tie it up on goals by George Robertson, Wayne Service and Nick Mickoskl, Len Wharton got the other Stratford goal in the opening period. Marlies Take Windsor In Windsor the winless Sptifires bowed to Marlboros 8-3 in another four-point game. A two-goal per- formance by Gord Haidy, the mark- ers coming within 20 seconds of each other, was about all Windsor fans had to enthuse about, though Earl Keyes gave Spitfires a 1-0 lead briefly in the first period before the Dukes began to roll. Bob Hassard was Marlboros' big scorer with three goals. Timgren, Formio, Kent, Maladinov and Church counted the others. One Game Tonight Young Rangers visit Hamilton in a battle for seventh place in to- night's only game. z Big game of the week, of course, is the visit of Joe Primeau's "St. Mike's" to Oshawa Arena this Wed- nesday night, where they'll clash with the Generals in what many hockey fans feel is one of the few chances remaining to put a stop to the long winning stréak. being -es- tablished by the "Irish", ' their town. Results By HARRY ECCLES What looked like a collapse of the Chicago Black Hawks featured the week-end National Hockey League games. While the joint pace-setters, Toronto Maple I.eafs Oanadiens, were lengthening their lead, the Hawks sank deeper in the cellat after two thumping defeats. The Hawks looked like a minor- league outfiit at Toronto Saturday an 11-0 defeat in which the Leafs rang up 27 scoring points, Cana- diens kept even with Leafs by wal- loping Detroit 4-1 at Montreal, And on Sunday the Hawks lost on their own ice to the New Vn: | Rangers, but it wasn't nearly so bad Rangers won a 2-1 [last five minutes, In the other Sunday game the Bruins came from behind to gain a 3-3 tie with Detroit Red Wings at Boston, Result is that Toronto and Mont- real today, with 21 points each, have a three point margin over Boston, and Detroit is anotner point back in fourth place. Detroit is three points ahead of Rangers, and Rangers are three points ahead of body. The little girl in the blue seats thought it was a swell rame at To- ronto Saturday night as the red goal light flashed on and off like a Christmas tree. She was probably the only one who thought so. The Leafs scored twice in the first per- fod, five times in the second and four times in the third frame. Eric Pogue dribbled a shot into the net off goalie McCauley"s pads right from the faceoff in the mid- dle canto and about 7 minutes later, McCauley moved out of his net to make a one-handed, casual catch. of a shot fired from the left boards, by Phil Samis. The puck wouldn't have been "on'/ the net it it had continued {its regular course but McCauley"s attempt to catch it resulted in the puck car- oning off. the heel of his hand, into the net. That made jt 4-1 for Oshawa and proved much needed for the Stratford team had much the better of the play in the 3rd period. Wharton, husky winger, popped the first goal of the game past C-owdis from close quarters and thirty seconds later, this ace line of Stratford's should have had another, for Mickoski fired one that Crowdis didn't see but it ca- romed off a skate and missed the net by inches, Wharton, Mickoskl and Robert. son formed the best line on h ice. All on the large size, they 1.ade use of their weight and speed and were very effective, es- pecially in the last half of the game. The only trouble was that Coach White used his No. 1 Strat- ford line so mugh trying to pull 0'. a win in the 3rd period that they were too tired to be effect- ive in the all important overtime session, Two Quick Goals A little more than a minute af- ter Wharton had opened the sco- ring, Milliard deflected a goal- mouth pass by Don Bauer and then Bauer snared the puck from the face-off, moved in and fired a hot shot past McCauley to put the Generals in front 2-1. The first period ended that way then came the two Oshawa tallies early in the second stanza.
