By Paul J. Butman I left the house shortly after one od headed East in the Fain, When [ hit the wats font, 1 out, horns claxons almost cheerfully, Moving farther along, I inserted a coin in the turnstile and walked on through © the Zront of the boat. The bell Jeep n the his gh ih room ran, the vont Ro 8 elt from the wharf. When we were ut Swhile I started back throu e passen- ger section, With the bright lights and the dark shining it re- minded me of an Rd time bar room. I thought it was empty at first but when my eyes were ac- customed to the light again I saw that a girl was sitting at the other end. I walked through; she didn't look up and so I had a chance to see her. As I passed Huoveh on to the back end of the Flancing obliqu: uely toward boa yi I was startled! Her face looked familiar but I knew that I had never actually seen her be- fore. It may sound foolish, but in the years that I was away, I thought of home, of the many dif- ferent little things about home, but there was no girl, and so I had a girl, that she must be there dong I hadn't found her yet. I pictured her viv- idly and this girl sitting here with her eyes down, her head lowered, was that very girl. It seemed so funny to me, that, with all of my disappointments, sleeplessness and my Inability to reconcile myself to the drastic changes, I should leave my bed on a miserable night and walk in the rain to a ferry that I hadn't seen in years and then suddenly every- thing ng orderly. ere she was, the girl who laughed and talked and kissed me, and waited for me to come home, Just as I had pictured Der, young, wistfull, pretty. She chi nged her position now, knowing, I think that I was looking. I wondered what to do; if she was the girl, she would be. fright- ened by any approach that I would make, But I had to meet her, to know her somehow, The trip across would be short. It seemed unfair that this culmination of my dreams and thoughts should be | governed or maybe defeated by the avs of piopriety, was determined to speak; to a it now. I put a cigarette in my mouth and went in. My heart alms were moist. 1 stood before her. "Could I borrow a match?" After nervously going through her pocketbook she handed me a pack. I slowly lit the cigarette; my mind racing wildly. e blue puffs moved lazily in the air, "It's nice outside," I said, don't you come. out?" Maybe she stnsed my sincerity, certainly my nervousness. She looked up; she looked so long that I felt foolish, Then she smiled a little and sald, "It must be cold out there?" She' sounded a little scared Dut Triendly, and I felt more composed cold, refreshing," PAC Seemingly uncertain, she stood up. We went throu ugh the deors and leaned on the fling Duiside, "I couldn't sleep," I said, "so I came 'down to take a ride. I like the sound of the whistles on the river. Silly, isn't it?" "No," -she said, "it's nice." "When I was a kid," I went on, "I loved the sounds at night. They stirred my imagination. They meant adventure, big boats going to China, Spain--but I guess it's Ihe Jocal tralfic that makes all the noise." "You're disappoinied then?" she smiled. I looked direptty at her. "I was isappointeds, " I said, "but I like ter now." She tumed away and looked out into the river. Breaking the long silence I asked her, "You don't live here, do you?" She didn't look around to answer. "No, I've been working here as a cashier in a restaurant. It's only temporary; tomorrow is my last ay At that point we neared the dock and the boat slowly slipped in. The pilings groaned and moved and hon we hit the other- side she fell against me and I felt her softness and the warmth of her ed throt i I bp ou] EE a ing another cigarette in my mouth The water churned between the boat and the dock and the river grew between us, I asked her for a match .again. She smiled weakly and I lit up slowly, wondering what to do. We continued walking and when we were near the end I said, "Can I walk with you?" She said uncertainly, "I don't know . , ." still looking down, keeping slightly ahead of me. en the thought struck me; I didn't have another cent with me, I went all through my pockets and there was nothing there. I stopped but she kept walking, off the boat, She was further away now and the guard closed the gates. I was still checking my pockets uncon- selously .when I saw her turn her head sli ight lly to look back. It was furtive I saw it. I felt like jumpin, ob the boat then; I was crazy. called to her, just, "hey", loud and high. She stopped and turned around as the bell in the engine room ra The boat moved from the dock. I must have looked like a clown, my feet wide apart and my hands still frantically searching my pockets. I hollered, "What's your name?" Her face looked anxious and she seemed to go up on her toes as though to help me hear. I heard her voice, "Jane," she said. * The water churned between the boat and the dock and the river grew between us. I never felt so helpless, so miserable, She stood there small and far away now. hen the whistle blew, she turned and walked. Her pocket- book slipped from under her arm and dangled at the end of the strap, bouncing against her leg as ghe disappeared in the mist of the lock. dof walked toward home; cold, de- jected, disgusted with myself. I hated to go home; I hated the cold -- everything -- the rotten rules that had hindered me. It was because of this that I was too slow and lost the girl that I dreamed ~of--Jane. To think that for one fleeting portion of a life time I spoke to her and smiled with her and then only to watch, helpless as she was swallowed into the misty mouth of a ferry dock. There was no way that I could find her now. I gathered the loose end of my woollen scarf and trudged on I stopped, sick inside of me, and leaned against a lamp-post. I reached for a cigarette and crumpled the pack after placing the last one in my mouth. Dazed, I watched: the crumpled" paper flow away In the gutter water. 1 struck the match and dropped: the empty pack. It tossed around in the tiny rapids; caught in a vor- tex, it whirled crazily and was finally swept clear to a- shallow part. Suddenly it caught my eye, bright and shimmering in the water! There is no way to say how I felt when I saw the ad on the match cover. They were the matches she had given me. I stooped and read it over and over again. It read 'Since 1867 Book- ers Fine Foods, Walnut and Dock Streets.' Stepping into the water, I lifted it from the street as though it were a precious stone. Whirling around I walked faster and faster toward home. Faster, to though tomorrow would hurry 00.
