© WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1946 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE BEAUTY FOR YOU-- > Scalp Care, Lustrous Tresse BY HELEN JAMESON Hair gets 'washed and hair gets dressed, a ritual which makes for pleasing appearance. That is as it should be. A smart coiffure is a ) worth-while contribution to the ~~ feminine composition. But there are hygienic duties that should not be sidestepped. When the old thatch has a mournful or sullen look when shafts are dull and tresses won't stay put, get after the scalp. Those silky threads aren't getting enough of the groceries that are normally distributed by the blood streams. By using plenty of friction during the shampoo, this fortnightly rite will serve as a scalp treatment. Don't just rub in the suds; pummel * the scalp as hard as you can. Give han and scalp a thorough overhaul- ing. Use melted soap, Apply it three times with plenty of elbow grease, following each application with a prolonged rinsing with fairly hot water, Use a bath spray for the purpose; it does a better job than the shower because the water floods every portion of the scalp area. A mild current is not effective; turn the faucet full on and let 'er rip. We doubt very much if the aver- age teen-ager gets her hair free of soap scum, If the hair is properly rinsed it will feel soft and silky, every shaft will be separated from its neighbor. It won't do to take a lovely halo for granted, to fancy that it may not thin out or change in character. It should have as careful attention as that which is given to the com- plexion, 'Well-cared-for tresses are less likely to whiten than those that are neglected. Brushing is invigorating if it is brisk and thorough. It brings a gloss, gives the topknot character. Many women never brush their hair; that is a mistake. The bristles should touch the scalp, pass through each strand with a rolling motion, Massage is a stimulating agent. . On the night before the shampoo, heat some mineral oil. Part the hair at various places; trickle the oil along the partings with a medi Keeping fingers stationary, do wide circles with the thumbs cine dropper or a small oil can un- til it is well distributed. Spread out fingers and thumbs and go at it. Keep the fingers stationary; do wide circles with the thumbs. Work diligently along the temples and forward hair line; it is at the tem- ples that thinning first shows up. Wrap the head in a towel and go to bed, For the oil treatment to be really effective, the lubricant should remain on the scalp for hours. It is believed by many hair spe- clalists that the balanced diet pro- motes a luxuriant growth of hair. Stands to reason that the hair, like other parts of the body, needs a variety of food elements. "Elizabeth" Aids - Tired Housewives London, Nov. 26--(CP) -- Brain- child of three demobbed officers of the British women's services, "Send for Elizabeth," is proving a boon to tired housewives, and bachelors distraught with house- hold worries. To earn a living Annette and Ma- ry Birtwhistle and Mrs. Mona Cor- bauld, founded Auxiliary Household Services, and called it "Elizabeth" for short. For 3§ 6d. (65 cents) an hour they do housework for any- body--but they won't "queue for ca- viare, comb poodles or arrange flow- ers." "It's time housewives had a break," said Mrs. Courbauld. "They have queued and cooked, washed and sewn single-handed long . We three are ready to give them the break they need and de- => serve." And that goes, too, for business women and bachelors with toe-less socks and frayed cuffs. RE PEELING "Spare the knife and save time and health, "advises the nutrition division of the Department of Na- tional Health and Welfare, in a note to homemakers on the preparation of vegetables. If skins are left on, the vitamins and minerals are Te- , and don't escape into cook- water. The health authorities suggest the eating of vegetable in order to get the best of their food value. They remind cooks that thorough scrubbing of the skins is essential to health. Can it be bought Canada?" A\ Duck Press is a wooden con- trap that shapes a cooked duck to good cutting shape, somewhat as the boiled hams are shaped. They're Old Country and 1 haven't been able to find a Canadian shop that stocks them, x & x "What is a Croissant? What is 8 Case Knife?" Croissant means crescent. Rt was the favorite rich flake pastry bread of Vienna, Paris, and the Riviera. It's an interesting story. When the Turks besieged Vienna in 1688, they burrowed below the walls to lay a mine. Three small bakers' boys heard the noise, hurried out like well. floured ghosts to warn the garri- son. For their reward, the bakery was given the exclusive right to make the breakfast rolls in the shape of the Turkish crescent. A Case Knife is an ordinary steel or silver knife used to cut shortening, level cup ingredients. * & x "What advice would you give |e 55-year-old woman who wants her skin to look fresh, clear, and, 7 may as well be frank, atirac- tive?" And who blames you? In the morning, clean your skin with cold cream, sponge off the eream residue with a pad wet with water, then astringent. Then put on what make-up you like, a foundation cream, rouge if you want to, and powder. At night, clean and lubricate your face be- fore sleeping. But the most important thing, and the cheapest for any skin, {s cleanliness. Our cosmetic girl will be glad to help a 55-year old look 55 years young. x ¥ & Is there any known cure for bunions?" Is surgery always suc. cessful?" Bunions are caused by the big 'toe being twisted so that the hinge and the sac in which fit operates become inflamed, some- times infected. Loose shoes, lo- (tions, and plasters will help, but will not cure. Surgery has been '98% successful, costs approxi. 'mately $75 for both feet, means 10 days in hospital, then walking with a lift for some time. Aah. Jamblyns. Each week in this column we will try to answer the questions you send in.
