When they had finished James spoke, declaring that God "did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His hame." He , | concluded his remarks by declar- na Charta of the Cissiatian cul The cha 8 g "certain apie who came to Antioch, where Paul and had such success in preaching to those of Jewish plood, and insisting t unless the oe onverts would themselves obey the old te of AM My they belong to the church, or This rite differentiated from all other peoples, men felt it was necessary the Old Testament mandate, was a serious matter and the dissension in the young church. and Barnabas had converted tiles and they felt it was necessary for them to virtually saved, for the elders at SEETESEER ' ing 2g 1 iH rgumen church fathers, for there be two denominations, Jewish, the other Gentile, The BER 8% and Samaria, the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great Joy unto all the brethren." Church Received Them Arrived in Jerusalem, "they were Tecaived of the church, and of the postles and elders, and they de- pe oa all things that God had done with them." Certain of the Pharisees who be- lieved presented their case, and the apostles and elders gathered to consider the matter. Peter upheld Paul and Barnabas, saying that God had decided that the Gentiles should hear the gospel, and "God, which knoweth the hearts, bare ing, "Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornification, and from things strangled, and from blood." After this "pleased. it the apos- tles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely Judas, sur- named Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren." They wrote letters, as James had suggested, telling the Gentlles, "Forasmuch as we have heard that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, sub- verting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law; unto whom we gave no such com- mandment: "It seemed good to us, being as- sembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our be- loved Barnabas and Paul. Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have gent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth." Then they stated the rules that they had all agreed upon as nec- essary for Gentiles to obey as well as Jews, and which have been mentioned before in this lesson, "For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these nec- essary things." The four were then dismissed and proceeded to Antioch, where they gathered and read the letter, and there was great rejoicing. Judas and Silas, being prophets also, "exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them." After they had tarried awhile Ju- das went away, but Silas stayed with Pau] and Barnabas, who, having won their point and saved the church from division, "contin- ued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also." ALL WELCOME Air Force Hero At Salvation 7 Army on Sunday Great interest has been arousel over the visit of Captain Walter Dinsdale to the local Salvation Army Corps this coming Sunday. Captain Dinsdale, who is on his way to France to assume Salvation Army responsibilities there, has just been discharged from the Royal Air Force, where he served with one of the famous Spitfire squadrons as a |° Flight Lieutenant, During the hec- tic days of the "Buzz" bombs, his squadron was detailed to devise ways and means of combating that manace, and to Captain Dinsdale goes the credit for being the first pilot to manoeuvre his plane so that his wing' deflected that of the aer- ial bomb and sent it back over the | channel to wreck death and de- struction to those who originally discharged it. For this feat, he was decorated by the king with the Dis- tinguished Flying Cross. Captain Dinsdale is the son of the late Corps Sergeant Major of the Salvation Army Corps at Brandon, Manitoba; who sat in the Manitoba Legislalative Assembly as the mem- ber for Brandon for many years. After graduation from the Univer- sity of Manitoba he was appointed to the faculty, and remained there until he entered the Salvation Army Training College, and be- came an officer, CEDARDALE UNITED CHURCH W.
