Catharines Athletics, newly-crown- ed Dominion champions for the fifth time in the last nine vears. The Athletics made it look easy last t as they polished off New Westminster Salmonbellies for their third straight victory over the west~ ern title holders to win the $5,000 solid-gold Mann Cup. Probably half the 7,726 fans in attendance at Maple Leaf Gardens came from all parts of "lacrosse mad Niagara Peninsula to enjoy the "kill" of their perennial favorites who outscored the westerners 40-26 on the round. Nobody in the know claimed it was a great club which was crowned last night but coach Jack Wood of the vanquished Salmonbellies figur- ed the champions were superior to the St, Catharines team which downed New Westminster two years 280. Victory established eastern supre- macy over the west in Canada's national game 15-11 in the history of the Mann Cup and 8-4 since the sport moved indoors as boxla in 1933, Since the days field lacrosse folded a western team has never won the trophy in the east. When their mighty atom -- Ike Hilderbrand--failed to explode, the westerners lacked necessary scoring punch to match the goal-hungry A's, Little Ike doped out the cause of the downfall closely when he praised goalie Doug Favell as the finest he'd ever faced and confessed he'd never been tailed so closely by checks, Voted outstanding player of the series by sports writers, Favell who sharpened his eye with a three-year Navy stint as "lookout" was pre- sented with the Mike Kelly Mem- orial Medal. He blocked 35 shots, a couple of them with his face, in last night's duel compared with 22 saves for Bill Scuby in the coast nets. For one of St. Catharines' all-time jgreate.=yaste (Wandy) McMahon-- ast night's tilt marked the end of the lacrosse road. The 32-year-old winger who has played on seven Mann Cup clubs, in announcing his retirement, admitted "the going is getting a bit tough." Two other members of the club who have played on seven cham- plonship squads' -- Captain Joe Cheevers and Roy Morton--expres- sed no immediate intention of hanging up their sticks. The ex- perience these veterans provided the squad, well sprinkled with young- sters, played a major role in the A's success, In the final tilt the Saints were behind but once--when the 'Bellies scored the opener, They beat the westerners to the draw on almost very faceoff and as throughout the series, their passes were smoother, their shots sharper. They were Yortny champions all down the line. eups: - ST. CATHARINES--Goal, Favell; Defence, FP. Madsen, Cove; Rover, Jack McMahon; Centre, Cheevers; Forward, Urquhart, Morton; Subs. Myers, T. Officials--Gus Madsen, St. Cath- arines and Joe Murphy, Toronto, Salmonbellies Take Defeat In Casual Style By GERRY LOUGHEED Canadian Press Staff Writer Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Oct. 5--(CP)--Except for the Mann Cup, emblematic of Lacrosse supre- macy, resting on top of a St. Cath- arines, Ont, Athletics' Locker, the dressing room atmosphere last night of the Athletics and the los- ing New Westminster Salmonbel- lies was almost identical. An ob- server could scarcely tell the A's had won the championship after a hard-fought 11-7 battle, There wasn't the expected shout- ing and cheers as the winners filed in--only a few back slaps from team rooters. The players theim- selves took the victory--their fifth in Mann Cup play--in their stride. The man probably most responsible for the triumph came in last, drip. ping perspiration, He was 24-year- old Doug Favell who played an outstanding game in the nets. "The whole team played a wonderful game," he splurted, "and my de- fence was really in there" He tossed his own efforts off with a shrug. - Coach George Cleverly of the A's admitted he crossed his fingers the Bellies edged within one of his team during the last with the score:8-7. "I figur- d we would got some more goals-- . The New Westminister played a fine game," he add- "But our team had more acocur- ooting In the clinches." From the coach of the Bellies, Jack Wood, came no excuse, "They played smarter ball than we did and tonight they were the better team. "My boys were missing some of their normal fire but those Athle- tics weré deadly in on the finish and a fine team---I'd say they were better than when they beat us two years ago. Louis, Oct. 5--(AP)--Boston's fence-busting Red Sox, with Ted Williams definitely back in the lineup, are ranked top heavy favor- ites to whip the newly-crowned Na- tional League champions from St. Louis in the 43rd world series open- ing tomorrow at Sportsman's Park' Despite the Cardinals stretch drive that overcame a 7% game Brooklyn lead and finally carried them past the Dodgers to the flag in the first tie play-off in baseball history, The odd makers remain Loyal to the home run power in the Sox Bats, particularly in Willams' ability to hit for distance. Boston is a 7 to 20 choice to take the ser- fes and 13 to 20 to take the first game. For manager Eddie Dyer of the Cardinals who has been riding the baseball hot seat since the "experts" last spring picked him to coast home 15 games in front, the rcte of an underdog is a welcome change. The Freshman skipper honestly believes his Red Birds have a real chance to upset the mighty Sox and he is banking on his southpaw pitching to do the trick, with that in mind, "Skip" Dyer plans to open with lefthanders Howie Pollet and Harry Brecheen and followed with Murry Dickson at Boston, Tex Hughson is expect ed to be Joe Cronin's choice al- though it may not be definite up to game time. Dave Ferriss and Hickey Harris are the other possi- | Collls bilities. Cronin, despite his 12-game etige | sos over Detroit at the finish, is not taking the Cardinals lightly. The Irish Skipper from San Francisco, who like Dyer won a pennant, in his first year as a big league man- ager with Washington in 1933, isn't | Pro sure about his opening day pitcher. | Solis He prefers to walt uatil after to-| ga day's workout and perhaps until game time. Both clubs have planned to lim- |r ber up at Sportsman's Park today although both are familiar with every nook and cranny of the field. M ST. MIKE'S NIP. ARGO JUNIORS Toronto, Oct. 5 -- (CP) -- Hockey star Ed Sandford let Téronto St. Michael's College to an upset 11-10 victory over Toronto Argonauts last night in a Junior Big Four football game. Sandford threw a touch- down pass to Colin Sinclair in the first quarter and then scored a maj- | W, or himself late in the third on a twisting run durin off two tacklers, eluded four more and then charged over the goalline dragging two Argo linemen with him. Ben Wolit's convert of Sand- ford's touchdown provided the margin of victory. Argo scorers were Arnlé Stocks with a touch- down, Paul Vanent! with a field goal, Tom Sherrington with a con- | gasy A: a vert and Al Murphy with a single. which he shook | I PORT =. NAPSHOTS comptes Following the Junior Interscholastic rugby game at Alexandra | Hewitt Park, this afternoon, at 2.00 o'clock, the first game of the O.A8.A. Inter. | paito: "A" Southern Ontario finals will be played, with Sarnia Polyners visiting the Oshawa Robson Leather, Tuesday, with the 3rd game, if necessary, booked for Thursday. Sault Ed Ste. Marie will visit the winners for the All-Ontario series with the first Rivett game at Sarnia or Oshawa next Saturday and the 2nd game on Monday (Thanksgiving Day) afternoon early and should a 3rd game be necessary, it will be played on Monday afternoon also, 4.00 o'clock. course the local "Tannery" team has to dispose of Sarnia's good Inter, "A" team if they hope to get a berth in the All-Ontario finals. Sarnia ousted Stratford, Chatham and Port Colborne all in two-straight series while Robson Leather did the same with Peterboro, Belleville, Barrie and New Toronto. Both teams are undefeated in their O.AS.A. playoft games, so this should be a good battle here today--and a new experience for somebody, likely Sarnia, * + + 9» It's hard to tell what is going to happen in a final series when you haven't:seen both teams, but while Sarnia Polyners must have something pretty good to win all their rounds in two-straight, we still think they will méet their matoh in the Oshawa "Tannery" team. The Leathermen are playing smart ball right now and while most of the players are seeking their Ontario championship--they have a lot of will-to-win and they have the ability in a well-balanced team, strong defensively with top-notch pitching and plenty of dangerous hitting power, to achieve their aim. Of course, Sarnia boys likely have the same idea and it wouldn't surprise us very much if this series went the full three but we'll have a better fdea on that after we see them this oon, in their first game. * ¢ + They cleaned up the Mann Cup series last night at Maple Leaf Gardens, with the St. Catharines Athletics winning the Dominion senior lacrosse title in three-straight games, New Westminster Salmonbellies Just didn't have enough size, speed and ability to cope with the Ontario standard-bearers, 'Winning Dominion lacrosse titles is getting to an ordinary thing for St. Kitts and Joe vers, who played his first senior lacrosse here in Oshawa before going to Orillia and thence to St. Kitts, must have about six or seven Canadian gold medals by now. "Ike" Hildebrand will have to shake loose from his check and do a lot more scoring in Junior hockey than he did in this lacrosse series. Branded as the leading scorer in the B.C. lacrosse loop, Ike was watched like a hae and didn't get much chance to run loose or flash that sizzling shot of his. * + + 9 | And the World Series opens tomorrow. St. Louis Cards and Boston Red Sox clash in the famous fall serious and it should be one of these exciting classics that produces a lot of surprises, the usual "goat" or two and of course a couple of heroes" The Sox, with their fine pitohmg staff and flock of dangerous hitters, are regarded as a mortal cinch in most baseball "hot stove leagues" but the Cards have been in a lot of these World Series affairs and they may pull off a surprise or two. At least, we can listen to something else besides "soap operas" for a few days, * > + SPORT SHORTS: --Oshawa Leglon plays up in Hamilton at Wood- lands Park this afternoon in the first game of the O.A8.A.
