Athletic Activities The sports activities av University of Toronto, Ajax Division, are head- ed by Buff Horton, With the possible exception of swimming, athletes can find training and keen competition in their specialty, The campus boasts a quarter mile cinder track, three hockey cushions also used fo» lacrosse, six clay tennis courts, two soccer fields, three by fields, 4 baseball diamonds, basketball court and ten bowling alleys. Intra-mural competition is foster- ed, and one highly successful field day has already been held, In addi- tion to rugby games between the schools, this year will see an Ajax team entered in the O.R.F.U. Food Service Department One very important department in the Ajax 'Division is the Food Services, which this year is man- aged by Miss D, MacLeod, Toronto University graduate in Home Econ- omics, ' To feed a greatly increased stud- ent body, the cafeteria has been en- larged to accommodate 1080 persons at one sitting, one of the largest restaurant in Canada, Last year the cafeteria seated 750 persons, and the feat of increasing its capa- and engineering. One wall of the building, easily 200 feet long, was removed intact and moved suffici- ently to add two bays to the interi- or, It was merely a matter then of adding more roof and extending the walls, uires 130 per- sons, bakers, cooks, butchers, wait- resses and cleaners: to staff the es- tablishment, A complete bake shop provides bread rolls, pastry and ples, The butcher shop, does its own buying and butchering. The staff is made up of persons living in the village or in residence, The atttactive quarters provided for those living in residence and the provisions made for their entertain- ment, has attracted many young women to the food services depart- ment, Student Residences Due to the increased enrolment it has been necessary to utilize all available residences, including those in the west area. In all there will be thirty-two residences, one of which is for women students, with a total accommodation of 2200. Eleven of these residences are lo- cated in what is know as Western uare, Bach residence is comfort ably furnished and contains study rooms, a common room and kite chenette, Mr, R. H, ig Bg visor of residences stated t atutle ents from many countries and all parts of Canada had already ap- ied for accommodation. Every ef ort is being made to see that all students living in residence benefit in every way from their University life at Ajax, Transportation The problem of transportation to be found where the. physical plant is spread over a large area is one that requires careful study and planning. The buildings at Ajax division are scattered over an area totalling 446 acres, cross hatched by sidewalks and roads. For the con- venience of the students, transpor- tation is provided to and from the lecture room and to the cafeteria. Six tractor-trailer transports do the work supplemented by the com- muters' buses which deliver their passengers to centres close to the classrooms. Recreation Facilities While recreation facilities were being expanded for the student body, attention was paid to the needs of the faculty and the em- ployees of the University, The EGGS WANTE SHIP DIRECT TO DOMINION STORES LTD. 832 OLD WESTON RD. These great events are sponsored each year by the local Kiwanis Club to promote the interests of all the children and youth in the community , . . This season's Rally will take place in the Oshawa Arena on Wednesday evening, Sept. 25. Faculty Club will have quarters in Arbor Lodge, where a lounge room, billlard rcom and a table tennis room have been made, using part of the west wing ef the building. The Employees' Recreation Club have been using their headquarters for some time, The club-rooms are complete with a dancing floor, card rooms, a billiard fom and a snack bar, This organiZation administers its own affairs, holding dances, shows and with a Ded bowling league. Harry Brock is the chair- man of the Employees' Recreation Council, Medical Accommodation The 'physical well-being of the students and employees Is given Proper attention by the medical staff under the direction of Dr. Mac- Kenzie. A 24 bed hospital provides proper hospitalization for the more serious cases, In addition to the medical services this year, is the well equipped Dentist's Office. Dr. E. R. Humphrey, newly released after four years of service with the Can- adian Dental Corps, is in charge of service, It is evident to anyone who had seen Defence Industries, that a tre- mendous amount of planning and development work was needed to make the transition from a shell Sing Plan to a University in such a short time. While the remodel- ling of the buildings was the great est single undertaking, many other factors added to the burden and the problems faced by those re- sponsible were many, Playing flelds are an important feature of any complete University, snd those at Ajax are well planned and located,» A certain amount of landscaping has added to the ape pearance of the place, and removed a nakedness noticeable in its origi- nal state. In effect, University of Toronto, Ajax Division is complete, a little primitive in tions of the exterior aspect, as might be expect- ed from its location, but neverthe- less a comfortable place to live. Marked Success (Continued from Page 9) said, "but we were able to accept all who were qualified." Superintendent J, Shortreed had considerable to say regarding the change-over from plant to school. "The. sympathetic assistance of firms and individuals" he raid, made our job much easier than it might have been, The contractors, tradesmen and labourers all seem- ed to find pleasure in being asso- ciated with the plan to aid the re- turned men, and their work showed it. Supply houses performed mir acles of procurement so that we would not lack supplies, and what they were unable to supply, we were gble to improvise or invent. It seemed more of a community ef- fort)" he said, "than a normal con tracting job," It is agreed by visi« tha , The bullding cost the Board $1,400. "It looks to me as though a high- er priority had stepped in," Mr, Morphy commented in explaining that Mayor McCallum had been of very great assistance to the board in the seguring of the bulld- ing. He pointed to the fact that His Worship had made numerous trips to Ottawa not only on behalf of the Hospital Board but also in the interests of the city. . In a report to Council at fits meeting on Monday night, His Wor- ship explained the situation fully. His disappointment over the turn of events was apparent as he talked to The Times-Gazette yesterday. He has spent a great deal of time try- ing to secure some of the buildings for the city and is still hopeful that three of them will be turned over to "".e city. . ANCIENT AUTO (Continued from Page 1) 1037 until early this summer. At that time Mr, Long needed an auto, but after observing the headaches connected with obtaining a prior. ity for a new model and a hasty glance at the prices quoted for us- ed cars he suddenly remembered the McLaughlin-Buick. He brought her out from storage, tore her down, cleaned. the valves and pistons and gave the motor a complete overhaul, THE TIMES-GAZETTE Saturday, Septembér 21, 1046 13 A tribute to the car's dependabil- ity and Mr, Long's skill as a me- chanic is the fact that the car runs almost as smoothly as if' she just came off the line, Only- two weeks ago Mr, Long completed a 200 mile trip up north and he reports that the car did =0t give him a minute's trouble. His sole worry is the tire problem. The wooden spoke 25-inch rim wheels carry a 33x4 tire and they are harder to get these days than a white shirt or a box of soap flakes. Can Do 55 M.P.H. Mr, Long gave a Times-Gazette reporter a trip around the city yes- terday and it can be truthfully stated that the car lives up to eve erything the owner claims for her, Maybe this should be whispered, but the old girl can do 55 miles an hour without working up a sweat. For the benefit of local police, the test was not made on Oshawa streets, Mr. Long returns to Batawa today to resume his duties as a machine shop inspector in the Bata Shoe ompany of Canada Limited, where e has been employed for the past seven years. He made the trip to Oshawa last Monday to visit his brother-in-law, Bert Hiles, at 117 Simcoe Street South, Accompany= ing him on the trip are his wife, Anita, and four children, Bonnie, 4; Joan, 3 and 2-year-old twins, Paul and Patricia.
