2 THE TIMES-GAZETTE Thursday, i (0) 8" ? rf] H. NAPSHOTS _Comvi Seplember 5, 1046 Ar ' to Alexandra Park tomorrow night, providing the ~ a A en wn be bright and shiny but also warm-- the | Local Sport Fans Get i 2 H i Harmony Millionaires learned last night that you cannot afford to play a bad game or have an "off night" in the playoffs so they are in the discard now and Belleville Goodmans go on as Eastern Ontario zone champs, to try for the O.AS8.A, Junior "A" crown again, They won it last season as the Belleville "Squires". Don Boyle, who acts as if he thinks he's a lot better than he really is, was still too good for the Harmony boys last night--because they helped him out by swinging at bad pitches, high and outside slants which they cpuldn't have reached with an extra foot on their bat. At that Boyle was nicked for 9 hits and "Bunny" Maeson gave up only 11 to Belleville and had 9 strikeouts to Boyle's 8. Maeson descrved a better fate but his mates were bad, They appeared nervous and jittery, They did some very dumb base running in spots, especially after they reached 3rd base, to throw away at least six runs. They ran when they should have stayed and stayed when they should have run, In addition, the Oshawa outfield was not as alert as usual while they were very weak and shaky at 3rd base and behind the plate. Errors and bad throws and bad judgment in these two spots made it easy for Belleville to stage a B-run rally in the 6th and break up a 3-3 tie, That cinched the game right there. Actually, if the Millionaires had played the spirited, wide-awake brand of ball with which they ousted Brooklin, North Oshawa, Pete's Place and then Peterboro, they would have won last night's game and forced a 3rd contest, Belleville may retain the Ontario title this year but we doubt it, On last night's display, they too looked like a very ordinary Junior softball team with Green, their catcher, being a standout per- former, They are also strong at lst and 3rd with pitcher Boyle of course, their big threat--but after that, they didn't look any better last night than the Harmony team, most of whom have one or two more years in Junior ranks, The Millionaires have done mighty well and Oshawa and Harmony fans should be still proud of "Dutch" Ose borne's good team. Nobis Robson Leather "Tannery" played what Bellevile softball fans SPORT SHORTS----The softball wars are thinning out the ranks of champlonship contenders, Here in Oshawa, our Robson Leather "Tan- nery" team appears headed for the Inter, "A" semi-finals at least and perhaps the coveted Ontario title, for they should oust Belleville now, after having won the first game . . « The Oshawa Juveniles are out and so are the local Juniors, Fittings and Harmony respectively having lost their Eastern Ontario final rounds to Kingston and Belleville , , . Oshawa Legion, Inter, "AA" entry, are sone champs and now await word from the O.AS.A. as to further playoff action .. . Casino Tigers walloped the Cedardale Lions Tuesday night at Cowan's Park and that climaxed the season for the Tigers, They lost only one game all season in about 32 or more, to win the Kinsmen's League title , , . And speaking of softball playoffs, we understand that there is to be a meeting tonight of the Legion softball officials, to decide whether or not that first game between Peterboro and Oshawa wil] stand as played. Mgr, Foley informs us the meeting is tonight but frankly, we doubt that a meeting will even be held, let alone the protest upheld. Why? Well, we'll let the Legion boys in on something--Peterboro played the first game of their next round with Campbellford on Tues day night and won 19-3. The return game is in Campbellford tonight and Pembroke is playing a semi-final round game in Peterboro on Saturday night. . » LJ » DIAMOND DUST--Shortly after we went to press on Tuesday, . "Ab" Walker phoned to say the Oshawa-Belleville Junior game would not be played in Peterboro on Wednesday as expected, The Peterboro diamond was busy, However, these two good Junior ball will meet In a sudden-death tilt down in Peterboro on Saturday 3.00 o'clock, for the right to go to Ottawa in the next fully expect the Oshawa B'Nal B'Rith team to oust Belle- in this 3rd game for on what we saw here Labor Day, are much the better team, more balance, power and pitching !
