After being held to a single run in the first inning, Orono overcame Whitby's two-run lead in the second with a seven- run rally, and there was never any doubt as to the final outcome after that, Only in the fourth and the seventh were the visitors retired without a run crossing the plate. Whitby scored in all innings but the fourth, but they could not match the power of the more ex- perienced Orono team, and they were handed their worst beating of the season. Its port is justly famous for its beauty, and at night, with lamps 1it along its length, it is called "the string of pearlsV, During war years a blackout was imnosed along the coast, but the ligihts are once again blazing on the shoreline, and at tracting tourists from all countries. As to the city, it has a population of some two million, and is cosmo=« politan- in atmosphere. The houses are close together, and" there are few large gardens because the space available is small. The city is ex- panding in size, and its architec- ture is very modern, the houses be- ing mostly in white, grey or pale colors, with red tile roofs. The Gows live in Copacabana, a residential section near the beach. Mrs, Gow said that Brazilian women are very beautiful and very well groomed but refused to com- mit herself as to whether . were better looking or better - than Canadian girls. She also praised the work of the Canadian diplomatic staff in Brazil, saying that they assisted their fellow coun- trymen in every way possible, The work of the Department of Trade and Commerce's represent- atives in increasing trade between the two countries is very effective, according to this former Whitbyite. These representatives work in Bra- zil to find markets for Canadian goods and are meeting with con- siderable success there. Asked about the government of Brazil Mrs. Gow remarked that the elections there were more heated than here, and that activities be- came very intense just previous to the voting. But she said she was impressed by the fact that they didn't go in for name calling and mud slinging there as much as has been the habit here during elec- tions, Otherwise the differqnces were accounted for by the more volatile spirits of the Brazilians, The language problem didn't bother her long as she learned Portugese, the official language there, within six months, by taking lessons and getting assistance from her friends. Her Portugese is far from perfect, though, she said, but enough for the newspapers and for conversation, During the war years all foreign language ) were banned in Brazil, so she and her family had to know the langu- age, although they listened to BBC .hews broadcast to get the lat= est and most correct information. 'The present spell of cool weather surprised Mrs. Gow, as she said that in the Brazilian winter, which is now, a day like Friday would be considered a cold day, Golf is a year round sport down there, and the hot season lasts . for three months, for part of which time the Gows usually try to, get away to the mountains and cooler weather.
