H, htbourne in Whitby Police Court on Wednesday morn. 8 On a second charge, of offering to sell his car at a price higher than the W.P.T.B, ceiling price, he was found not gullty. The two charges were laid by tne Wartime Prices and Trade Board allegedly as the result of informa« tioin discovered by two W.P.T.B, in- vestigators, A. W. 8B, Greer, K.C. acted for the defence and Allin F. Annis, K.C. prosecuted for W.P.T.B, Sold For Proper Price The evidence showed that the car, a 19046 Dodge, had been sold to E. Murrell, of Bowmanville, on the afternoon of May 31, and bought from R, M. McManus, a Colborne dealer, on April 4 of the same year, According to the testimony of Mur- rell, Pretty had operated a tax! business In Ajax and was'selling it, and had also sold the car, for the proper price, Defence claimed that the regula- tion concerning resale had not been sufficiently publicized, and that it did not apply to cars obtained with. out a priority. Offered $2100, Evidence given on the second charge by W.P.T.B. Investigators was that acting on information they had approached Pretty in the late afternoon of May 31 and made him an offer of $2100. for the car, some $800 over the ceiling. Accord- ing to the investigators he said "I think I would, (take it) but there's a catch in it, I can't deliver it for two weeks as I have to go to Wind- sor, Cross examination brought out that the investigators had said dur- ing the conversation that they were from Montreal, buying cars, and on their way to Toronto, and that these statements were false, They stated that shortly after the meet- ing Pretty came to them and sald, "I've changed my mind." On Tuesday night Newcastle scored their second win from the Whitby girls as they again came from behind with a couple of big innings and won the game, 26-14. Willams' rink from Port Hope carried off top honors in the men's trebles tournament held at the Whitby Men's Bowling Club greens yesterday, In' spite of ex- cellent weather, there were only six rinks entered, four frcm the home club and one from Aurora and Port Hope, M. Members o* Whitevale Church Had Very En- joyable Outing (Edith Parks, Correspondent) Whitevale, Aug. 14.--First Baptist Church held a very enjoyable picnic 'at Lynbrook Park on Saturday last. After an afterncon of swimming and informal entertainment on swings and slides the picnicess, sixty in number seated themselves down to a fine supper. Although there was a shower, the spirits of the crowd were 'not in the least dampened, and the races and games were enjoyed alter supper. To con- clude the day, there was a baseball game, dnd a sing song to the ac- companiment of a guitar. Miss Jean Fleming and Miss Myrtle Gorrell of Toronto enter- tained on Friday last, in honor of Mrs, K. CO. Donnelly of Whitevale who celebrated her birthday.
