. NEWS OF WHITBY AND THE SURROUNDING DISTRICT Pullet Lays 18 Eggs In 9 Days Stouffville, Aug. 10--Out on the mink ranch of Mr. A. D. Huckerby, 6th Concession, Markham, théte is but one pullet on the place, given to the children by a neighbor when just hatched so the lonely Leghorn biddie, with no playmates of her kind to distract teention, threw her full energy into laying eggs. Not just pullet eggs, but grade A hen eggs, and what she did the last month may constitute a Canadian record. In nine days the little mite of a bird between three and four months laid 18 eggs. Just an old ofl barrel lying in the orchard with a bit of straw inside was sufficient inspira- tion to perform her marvelous feat in, Records indicate that two eggs a day have been produced on occa~ sion, according to poultry experts, but they are rare, and hens making such a record law in the morning and again in the afternoon, Now this little "biddie" doesn't take all day to do her job. When she enters the nest, both eggs are laid immed- fately, and she walks out without even a cackle. She believes in hid- ing her light under a bushel and is as quiet as a mouse, after produc ing two eggs. One might expect her to cackle or even crow as some hens have been known to do, India To Aid Flying Clubs New Delhi, Aug, 13--(CP)--Ailr- craft and engines have been loaned and assistance in preparation of landing grounds, hangars and work- shops is being given by the govern- ment of India to flying clubs in India. A mechanical weed cutter, which uses a gasoline engine to drag a cable through' the water, is operat- ing in the vicinity of the Port Perry dock. Town employees, working un- | der direction of a government sup- ervisor, are reaping a heavy harvest of slimy green plant growth, Before the war it was customary to cut weeds each summer, but this practise had to be abandoned dur ing the war years. Workmen are now busy cutting down the head start which the weeds achieved while cutting operations were sus- pended. Residents and municipal officials of Port Perry are anxious to pre- serve the town's fine reputation as a quiet family summer resort, and are engaged in further beautification of the attractive little community. . Os- ubka-Morawski, has one of the toughest government jobs in Europe today as he battles for his country's reconstruction and internal security but he's never too busy to see the foreign press. . Affable and hard-hitting in ex- pressing his convictions, the premier has always left the door open for foreign correspondents to approach him--in marked contrast to some other members of the provisional regime. ~ A press conference with Osubka- Morawski never falls to produce news. If he has none of his own to hand out--and he usually has-- then a question or two often pro- duces the best story of the day. He knows the answers and he unhesi- tatingly gives them. He always speaks in his native language, although he knows others, and usually he speaks so clearly that anyone who has even a little knowledge of Polish doesn't have much trouble getting the cardinal points» The premier usually holds his press conferences in the long, space fous palace In Krakowski Przed- miesoju, near the Hotel Bristol and almost within a stone's throw of the Vistula. J He's always ready for anything and doesn't require that questions be submitted in advance. SOUTH --- Phone Whitby 524 one reason why the answers he gives often make frontpage news, The premier is keenly alert to in- ternational developments and. keeps a close eye on what happegs par- ticularly in the United States, cog- nizant of the deep attachment of Poles for that country. He frequently sees United States Ambassador 'Arthur Bliss Lane and all other envoys and keeps up to the minute on what's doing where and why. After he has submitted himself to a barrage of questions from 20 or 30 foreign correspondents that sometimes lasts as much as two hours, and when he knows he has satisfied the thirst for news, the premier usually 'asks the newsmen into an adjoining palace room for a glass of wine, Among his own people, the prem- {fer has a reputation for straight- speaking, unquestioned honesty and hard work. He has gained the respect of cor- respapdentts to whom he says "You do not always have to say nice things about Poland. Just tell the truth. And come and see me when you want to know something." That's in marked contrast to President Boleslaw Bierut. He sel- dom sees the foreign press. Consul's Secretary Wants to Be Model Montreal, Aug. 13.--(CP)--To be & model is the ambition of green- eyed, titian-haired Montrealer Dor- is Quinn, private secretary of a vice-consul in the local office of | the Consulate General of the Uni- ted States. "Two years ago the Board sent us a letter asking us to set aside the funds to provide for school extens- ions", commented Mayor McCallum with Ald. Davis concurring. City in Same Boat "They are all taxpayers on the Board of Education so they have a right to lay plans", His Worship continued. "We are going alread without the city's consent on plans to spend a million and a quarter for a sewage disposa plant and trunk sewers. It is the same thing in this case, The Board still has to pay its architect, Las wteek we had a man sit here and tells us that our sewage disposal system would be outstanding in the Dominion, The school would have been out- standing in thte Dominion, too". At the request of Council, Cfty Treasurer Blackburn was called to the meeting and explained that an officer of the Department of Muni- cipal Affalirs had stated that no legal procedure was necessary. The Board will pay the bill and at the end of the year fhe Council will meet its request to@ay this amount over to thte board. This amount will be carried as an advance on next year's levy for educational purposes. If the school is proceeded with it could be added to the cost | of the school and capitolized. The remark was interposed by Ald, W, J, Lock that t*2 &£)~ d| could not have gone to the public before it had its plans and incur- red the architect's fees. Ald, Davis pointed to the fact that Sault Ste. Marie is going ahead with the erection of two schools similar to the school pro-' posed here; while another was go- ing up in East York. i It was stated by Ald. Cay that the story might be different in East York where a large percentage of the cost was born by the Depart- | ment while Sault Ste, Marie was & highly industrialized centre. AS.
