NEWS OF WHITBY AND THE SURROUNDING DISTR Ie WOLVES' PLAYOFFS TEE OFF TONIGHT Take On North Oshawa In Two Out of Three Series By NEIL MacCARL Whitby Wolves will start their way down the playoff trail tonight when they begin the best of three series with North Oshawa in the "O" series of the Oshawa and Dis trict Junior Softball League. The Wolves finished out the regular season by winning four of their last five games, including victories over Aces and Pete's Place, the front runners in the league, and look fo be in top form to meet North Osh- awa, In the three regular games that these teams played, the Wolves won two, and probably would have taken the other if théy had not been shorthanded with two of their best players on holidays. In addition the | Miss Wolves finished the season with an even .500 percentage and nine wins and an equal number of losses, as compared with North Oshawa's sea- son record of six wins and twelve losses. Samanski To Pitch Wally Samanski will do the hurl- ing for the Wolves in the all im- portant first game tonight, and he probably will 0 d by Martin for the visitors. er the season, Samanskl has earned a reputation of being one of the best hurlers in the league, and if he is In top form he should have no \trouble with the visitors, He hurled both the games that the Wolves won, and he completely dominated the North Oshawa batters. On the other hand the Wolves had very little trouble with the slants of Martin, and they pounded him for 17 runs in their first meeting. Ross continues to pace the Wolves at the plate with a near .400 aver- age but the team as a whole has improved their batting in the last two weeks of the season, and Sun- din especially has pounded the ball at a furious pace. Cobourg Kiwanis Jrs. Defeat Whitby Here To Grab Off Second Spot ® Ld Cobourg Lads Hit Quantrill Hard In Closing Stages To 'Snatch Valuable Vic- tory Over Whitby Rotary -- Kellough Hurls Finé Game For Visitors -- Campbell Clips 4 Hits For Perfect Average (By NEIL MacCARL) Whitby Rotary lost their chance to move into third place in the Lakeshore Junior League Saturday night, when they fell victims to Cobourg Kiwanis by a 7-5 count. The loss for the locals, their sev- enth of the season leaves them with an uphill fight if they are to wind up in the third spot to clinch a play off berth, and Co- bourg's win moved them into sec ond place ahead of Bowmanville, The visitors scored once in the sixth to break the 3-3 tie, and they added three more in the seventh for good measure, when they got to Quantrill for five hits, including a long three-bagger by Quigley, and then they weathered out a two run Whitby rally in the last half of the same inning to take a 7-5 win, Kellough Hurls Well Kellough, who had lost out in a 2-1 pitcher's duel to Quantrill, last Saturday, was the winner this time as the tables were turned. The Co- bourg ace gave up eight hits in go- ing the distance, but he kept them well scattered and limited Whitby to five runs, while at the same time his mates broke Quantrill's spell over them, and they belted him for 13 hits including two damaging triples, and made them good for seven runs, in sharp contrast to their two hits and one run last week, Kellough also bested Quan- trill in strikeouts by nine to eight. Centre fielder Campbell was the big gun in the Cobourg attack, with a perfect night at the plate, bang- ing out. four singles in the same number of tries, and batting in two runs. Quigley proved his right to bat in the cleanup spot by driving in three runs with a single and a triple. Jamieson hit Quantrill squarely getting a pair of singles and a three bagger, and Hogan also made a pair of hits. Rae and Har- gen shared half of Whitby's eight Cobourg got off to a fast start : collecting three runs in the .first two innings, Jamieson drove in the first run of the game when he fol- lowed Hogan's single with a long triple, and he crossed the plate on Quigley's safety, making it 2-0 for the visitors. Whitby got one run back their half of the first when Rae opened with a double and scored on Harden's single. In the second frame Cobourg again went | two runs out front as Shorey came through with a single scoring Campbell who also had singled, and advanced on two stolen bases. Whitby evened things up in the fourth frame as Williams contrib uted a double after Gates got on by an error, and McCloskey beat out an infield hit. However Wil- liams was thrown out trying to get to third base when Shorey dropped a third strike, Winners Finish Cobourg again took the lead in the sixth by pushing across a lone tally on an infield error and Camp- bells third single. Kellough bore down in the sixth to protect his slim margin and he retired all three men to face him on strikes, In the seventh Quantrill really got in trouble as Hogan led off with a hit, D. Goody fanned, but Jamieson kept the rally going with another single, and then Quigley contrib uted a timely triple that cashed fo ANNTRnnnnnnnnnnnmmnninnm both runners, He was thrown out at the plate In trying to score on McMillan's fielder's choice, but F. Goody added another single and Campbell maintained his perfect average by clouting his fourth hit and driving in McMillan with their final run, Whitby made a last inning bid and got two runs as Lowe and Har- den got successive singles and scor- ed on F. Goody's error, The loss tor Whitby now means that the locals must winn all their remaining games if they are to have more than a mathematical chance of\finishing in the playoffs, Whitbys record now stands at nine wins against seven losses, while Co- bourg in the second spot have nine wins and just four losses. The next home game for the Ro- tary boys will be against Oshawa Hunters on Wednesday night in the local ball yard, and Whitby will be striving to keep their playoff hopes alive and gain revenge for two 'Local Lads Win At Shamrock A.C.
