In Handy Fashion, Takes Over Second Place In Loop Race - ' Clapp Holds Mayfairs To Only 3 Hits In Fine Pitching Performance -- Turner Makes Sensational Catch -- Poor Fielding and Costly Errors Make It Bad Night For May- fairs--Legion Hits Keeler Hard : Legionna! on o. place in the local Inter. "A" softball race when they trounced Mayfair Lanes 8-2 last night at Alexandra Park. Powerful work at the plate, or rather, timely work since the hits were more valuable in their place than they were because of length, was the deciding factor in the win for Legion, plus a brilliant 3-hit pitching performance by Graham Clapp. took over undisputed Clapp Allows 3 Hits Clapp had Mayfairs practically eanng of his hand, and that despite thre€ walks he issued and a few errors made by his mates. May- fairs didn't get a man on base after the first inning, until the 6th, when they scored their tWo runs. Doug. Keeler opened by striking out but Walker drew a walk. Turner sing- Sammy Stark Takes Top Spot In Batting Race -- "Bill" Harmer, official scorer of the Oshawa City & District Softball Association's Intermediate "A" League, has issued his latest statis- tics, which show that Sammy Stark has been hitting the ball at a ter- rific clip in the past two weeks, to take over top spot in the batting race, replacing his team-mate, Eddie Reigle, also of Robson Leather, who has slipped back into second slot. Billy Taylor and Andy McMullen of Legionnaires and Wes, Keeler of Mayfairs are others high in the .300 "Taffy" Mayne of Legionnaires with five wins and no losses and Al. Hiller of Robson Leather Tan- nery, with four wins in four starts, are both pitching 1000 in the pitch- er's race. Mayne has had 39 strike- outs too. Doug. Keeler singled, scoring Walker and an error by Normoyle allowed Turner to come romping home. Monaghan singled to open the 7th but was caught going to 2nd. In the 8th, W. Keeler walked with two out but he never yeached 2nd. In the 9th inning, Monaghan walked with one out, went to 2nd on a passed ball and to 3rd on an infield out as pinch-hitter Batten grounded to Taylor but D. Keeler grounded out and the game was over. Clapp's fine hurling made May- fairs look very ordinary at the plate, but at the same, time, credit for al- lowing only 3 hits must be 'shared with his mates. MecInally and Barnes both collected a lot of out- field drives while in the infield, Taylor vas a standout. Legion Hits Hard Legion hit Keeler hard and often. They didn't score until the 4th, al- though they threatened in the first with two hits by Taylor and Mec- Mullen, both coming after there were two out, Davies walked in the 2nd and' Weatherup singled and McInally walked to fill the bases but Keeler fanned Clapp, forced Barnes and Normoyle to pop up, to the in- field. In the 4th, Legion broke out with their first runs, four in a bunch on only two hits. With one out, Wed- therup was safe on a two-base error throw by W. Keeler. McInally then singled, scoring Weatherup. Clapp hit into left and Turner errored on the play. Then Barnes popped out but Normoyle singled to put Clapp on 3rd and he stole 2nd. With two runners in position, Walker threw wildly to 3rd and both scored. In the 6th inning, Legionnaires collected four hits for three more runs, - Barnes opened with a single but was forced at 2nd. Taylor was safe on an error by Kewin and then McMullen, Wilson and Davies all connected for hits. Wilson got his valuable blow through the middle of the infield, with the bases loaded. In the 7th the winners got their final run, after there were two out, on a hit into right by Normoyle on which Monaghan errored. Normoyle, McMullen and Mac- Inally each got two hits off Keeler and the other six got five hits among them. Turners catch to rob Taylor of a sure homer in the 3rd inning, was the fielding gem of the season. MAYFAIR LANES -- Turner, If; Fair, cf; W. Brooklin- Dodgers Defeat Harmony In Tight Battle (By J. Bond) Brooklin, July 2.--Brooklin Dodg- ers on Tuesday night outscored but didn't outfight the fast-travelling "Millionaires" from Harmony by 11 to 8. The game was featured by poorly called plays by the plate um=- pire and by the great work of the outfielders. Harmony took a commanding lead of 8-1 at the end of the fourth on some solid hitting by Loreno, Saunders and Robinson while Brooklin's . lone run was a freak homer by Browne when Terwilligar lost the ball in the long grass. After Harmony had scored 3 runs in the fourth with none out, Browne, Brooklin's ace, took over and held Harmony scoreless for the rest of the game although a hit and a walk in the ninth put Harmony To-Nite .
