His adventures, alto- gether unique and memorable, will Biltmore Theatre. thrill everyone who attends the RAF Youth Of Winnipeg Made Squadron Leader For Heroism In Albania One Time Barnstorm- er Describes Attack on Enemy Ship and Fight With 5 Planes Cairo, Dec. 24--Alfred Llewellyn Bocking, 24-year-old former Winni- peg barnstormer, has helped to write a brilliant passage in the Royal Air Force's history of the war by his exploits in the Albanian skies. He has just been promoted squadron leader in recognition of his achieve- ments, which include the bombing and crippling of an Italian destroyer in Santi Quarana harbor. The airman is the son cf Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Pocking, 291 Simcoe street, Winnipeg.. The father is em- ployed in the registration depart- ment of the Winnipeg post office. He joined the R.AF. in 1935 and was decorated with the Distinguish- ed Flying Cross for action in Pales- tine. Born in Belfast, Ireland, Bocking came to Winnipeg with his parents at the age of 11 menths. He re- ceived his education at the Norwood public school, and after studying at Wesley College left to join the R.AF. During his student days he passed his private flying test at the age of 16 and received his commer- cial license a few days before his eighteenth birthday. He is well known in Winnipeg flying circles. He studied flying under Connie Johanneson. Another brother, Stan- ley, is now a member of the R.CAF. Defies Worst Weather This is, in brief, the background of a great flyer who has played a leading role in the R.AF. action to gain and hold mastery of the skies over Albania. He has taken part in bombing attacks on shipping docks at Valcna harbor--the civef objec- tive of the Greek drive--and has machine-gunned Italian troops in snow-covered mountain passes. Dur- ing the worst Balkan weather, often in sub-zero temperatures, he and his mates have performed prodigious feats. Squadron Leader Bocking was one of the first to bomb Koritza, and aided greatly in paving the way for the capture of the town by the Greeks, I spent sever hours with this praise pilot to-day. He described the bombing of the Italian destroyer in Santi Quaranta harbor. He told me: "I went over, flying high, and drepped to 14,000 feet. I could see Italian' fighters at & distance, but they did not see me. AS we were about to go into a dive I called up the rest of the crew by telephone and sald: "This is the moment I dislike most." Crew All Cheerful. "The observer answered, chuck- ling: 4 "Well, I think this is the best part of the trip. "They all laughed when I said: 'Here goes.' "We dived to 500 feet and dropped the bombs. They fell on the stern and disabled the destrcyer. We made a second run through pom- pom and other anti-aircraft fire and turned around the masts, ma- chine-guning the crew." During another bombing raid, the Winnipeg flyer's plane was attack- ed by five Italian fighters, armed with machine-guns and two cannon "I thought it was all up," Boeck- ing said. 'The bullets flew all around as we had the window of the cockpit open, and tracer and in- cendiary bullets were flying past. We smelled something burning and thought the ship was afire, but the sergeant observer, sitting as cool as you like beside me, prodded me and indicated the smell came {rom Italian shell tracers. Almost Went Down "I admired the observer's calm, especially when he grimaced and held his nose, and then delicately closed the window tight, as if to keep out both the smell and bullets. I'll say it's grand to fly with such men." The Italian planes chased them to the Greek lines, "That was one time we almost went down on our bellies. We were flying so low," he said. "Then as the Italians funked the fight, we soared over the snow-white moun- tains." My interview with Bocking oc- curred under remarkable circum- stances, aboard one of Britain's largest "flying battleships," over the Mediterranean during a patrol. We played cards as we headed toward Crete from the shores of Greece. The game was suddenly in- terrupted by the crackle of the guns on our ships. It was only a false alarm.
