INNORTH ONTARIO Swastika Will be Known as Windston Henceforth Toronto, Dec. 11.--With an eye on boosting Ontario's tourist trade and at the same time honoring Bri. tain's Prime Minister," the Provin- cial Highways Department is chang« ing the name of Swastika, rallway { junction five miles from Kirkland Lake, to Winston. This announcement was made at Queen's Park yesterday by Hon. T. B. McQuesten, Minister of High- ways. It is expeoted the railway will change its station board sign at Swastika to conform with the | new name and an application will be made to Ottawa to change the name of the postoffice to Winston. "While the swastika, long before | Hitler, was a symbol of good for- tune, it now bears a bad odor," said Mr. McQuesten. "In view of events, this country might well pay tribute to the man who is leading the En- pire against the fortes which are flaunting the swastika, not as a symbol of well-being and good luck, but as one of evil to civilization and mankind." The Ontario Government intends to spend considerable money in an effort to attract increasing numbers of United States tourists to the Province, and it is felt that these visitors would not associate the name Swastika with anything but Hitler and the Nazis, and might be affronted by seeing the name in their travels north, having no know- ledge of its history in the commun- ity. It has already been indicated te the Highways Department that a change of name would be advisable. Canadian Legion branches in North. ern Ontario and other patrictic bodies have written the Government urging a change. The department's attention to the matter was directed recently in plans to open a highway office at Swastika. Residents Opposed Swastika (Winston), Dec. 11--The people who live in this little railway junction, five miles from Kirk- land Lake, have no more regard for Hitler and his Nazis than any other Canadians, but they are very much opposed to changing the name of Swastika to Winston, as decided upon by the Ontario Department of Highways. The fact that Swastika is not an incorporated village leaves the resi- dents without a say in the matter. They appreciate the fact that in re- naming it Winston, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the Highways Department {is honoring the famous statesman, but they point out, somewhat plaintively, that their village has borne the name of Swastika for more than thirty years--long before the Nazi party was created. Last September a meeting was held here to discuss the question of changing the name. Sentiment of the residents was strongly op- posed. "Swastika," they said, is a name which has significance in the North and it would remain as such long after Hitler and his followers had been swept away. Reeve R. J. Carter of Teck Town- ship, which takes in Swastika, thought the action of the Govern- ment was "high-handed; to say the least." WHERE COMFORT FATAL Birmingham -- (CP) -- Following an inquest after two people died of fumes from a ccke brazier, the coroner warned thempublic not to set up improvised h€ating apparat- uses in air raid shelters, THE OLD HOME TOWN - By STANLEY MAW! CALL OFF YER CAT | WANT To TAKE REX HUNTIN' HONEY USED FOR YULE DECORATING T0 HELP BOMBED Whitby Merchants Decide To Forego Christmas Trimmings Whitby, Ontario, December 11.-- A fine patriotic gesture was made by the Whitby Better Business As- sociation at a meeting held on Mon. day evening in the Co-operative Hall, when it was decided that in- stead of spending Association funds for decorating the streets with trees and lights for Christmas, a donation of $50.00 be made to the British War Victims' Fund, for wrich subscrip- tions are being taken by the Gazette and Chronicle on behalf of the To- ronto Evening Telegram. The Association also decided to make a call on every busines and professional man in the town seek- ing a contribution to the Fund which is giving timely aid to the brave men, women' and children of Britain suffering from" Hun bomb- ings. Many have lost the savings of a lifetime, their homes, business, etc, and are relying on those of their comrades in other parts of Britain and the Empire to help them. The Toronto Evening Tele- gram to date through its columns has collected over $100,000, and has made prompt remittances to Brit- ain. The Association 'a month or two ago sent $25.00 to the British War in addition to the $50.00 just voted, a large sum will go from Whitby as a Ohristmas gift to this worthy cause. President A. J. Bell presided over a well' attended meeting. The As- sociation might have decided to spend money on something which would have bfought them more Christmas business, but it was the feeling of all present that the War Victim's Fund had first claim and that the Association should give every assistance to it. Canvassers were named to ap- proach every business and profes- sional place in town, including the factories, and this will be doze this week so that the mogey can be for- warded as quickly as possible. The Association decided to an- nounce through an advertisement, to be donated by the Gazetle and Chronicle, its decision to help Brit- ain's needy Instead of going into street decorations for Christmas. The next meeting of the Associa- tion will be held early in January; it was decided. PULPS, COMICS OUT OFF DEC. 16. The intention is to per- mit florists to bring in stocks for the Christmas trade and after that the ban will apply. The Department of Finance is daily being asked to rule on who pays the 25 per cent excise tax on household appliances, luxury goods and motor cars, ordered but not delivered before nounced. The ruling is that the tax applies on any order not actually delivered by the As far as the department is con- | cerned, the question of who pays the tax depends on the' contract under which it was sold. Frequent changes in taxes in recent years have led to an escalator clause In many prepared contracts which passes on to the purchaser new taxes imposed prior to delivery.
