H. CAMPBELL, BY Gro. H. CameseLL, Sports Editor Editor Before going song with the business of writing a column for today's issue, we would like to make an appeal to the Osh- awa sport readers, especially those who have any old hockey boots and skates kicking around their cellar or attic, not in use (the boots and skates we mean). * + + The Knights of Columbus Cana- dian Army Huts are collecting sec- ond-hand boots and hockey skates to be distributed through their Army Huts to the soldiers (regard- less of creed) in training this win- ter 'at such camps as Petawawa, Camp Borden, North Bay, Fort William, Brockville and Chatham. Any person who has a set of hoc- key bcots or skates to give to this cause, is asked to call Albert Love, at 1320 or 2743J and arrangement will be made to have the "donation" picked up. * + + The University of Mlinesota Gophers, undefeated U. S. foot- ball team, have closed their sea- son and will make no trip to the Rose Bowl this year, nor will they play any post-season games. * + + Lew Jenkins, US. boxing cham- pion, is going to do some fighting | in the U.S, Army. > + % Even though the Oshawa "Generals" are not carded yet, we note that the S.P.A. hockey series is moving along nicely. * There were two home" victories chalked up in the N.HL. last night. Toronto Leafs won a very nice game in New York over the Broadway Blues. Rangers were no match for the fast-step- ping Leafs. Gordie Drillon rapped home a couple of goals, one of them in his old-style, rink-length rushes. 8yl Apps was also to the fore while | the Goldup-Langelle-Marker line | continues to play smart hockey, > P+ Leafs are quite & potent pack of pucksters when playing away from home, * + 0 In the other N.HL. night, Jack Portland, game who came back to Canadiens, via Boston-Chi- | eago, chalked up a nifty revenge tally in the third period to give Dick | Irvin's Canadiens a 3-2 victory over | the Bruins, right in Boston. That must have been a tough pill for the Big Bad Bears to swallow on thelr own ice and it stamps the Canucks 83 a real threat in this year's race. * * Right now, Toronto Leafs (how we hate to admit it, eh?) look to be easily the best team in the league and the rest are pretty even, with Rangers, Chi- cago, Boston, Detroit, Canadiens and Amerks coming in that or- der. Watch they don't finish in much the same order, too! * bb Oshawa Generals have an exhi- bition game this week. They are going up to Owen Sound on Friday night to play the Intermediate team up there. It should be a valu- able workout for the Motor City kids and give them a chance to whip into shape for their S.P.A. game which is expected to be next weex. de BB Here at home, the local puck fans are awaiting Friday night because Niagara Falls Brights are coming. Brights have one of the fastest team in the Sen- ior O.H.A. race and their visit here Friday should be one of the best hockey games of the schedule, before New Year's, LAR BR There are three OH.A. senior games on the books for tonight-- and they'll likely be played unless the snowstorm blocks the roads so that some of the teams are unable to reach their destinations. BACHELOR CIGARS 100% Havana Filler "away-from-. last | Oshawa GM-Men have the longest trip ahead of them since they are slated to drop in on Dr. Jerry Laflamme's London Streamliners, A win for the GM-Men tonight 1 London will keep them tied for third place in the standing and set the stage for a grand attendance at the game here Friday night. * + + Other games tonight will find the Saints visiting Brights in Niagara Falls while Port Colborne Sailors will go to Toronto to meet Marl- boros. The Marlies should get their first home-ice victory tonight. * + + Oshawa hockey fans wio at- tended the game here Monday night and then went home to listen to their radio, were ra- ther surprised to hear Rex Stimers broadcasting the same game but still only in the mid- dle of the third period. Raci- dentally, some of the plays de- scribed by Rexie from his long- distance view in St. Catharines were not even vaguely remem- bered by the fans who actually saw the game played here He almost had his Saints winning the game--but then, why not, it isn't so long ago stace he was afraid Oshawa wouldn't finish out the schedule, * +P Balmy Beach are girding up their battle uniforms to clash with Ot- tawa Rough Riders. It seems a shame that the Balmies, who have been rugby's underdogs in Ontario and Toronto for years, will now have another handicap to their gate receipts, just when they finally get in the playoffs, where the "gravy lies." (CP)--One of the most important of a variety of factors that are keeping Toronto Maple Leafs at the top of the Na- tional Hockey league their ability to win on the road. When Leafs beat Rangers 4-2 here last night to stretch their margin of leadership to four points over Detroit, it was the fifth con- secutive time the Leafs have won on the road this season.
