Magistrate Burbidge, who on Nov. 8 adjourned trial of Loosely for two months, to permit RCAF. autherities to apply for a transfer | of the case to a military court, was advised that the Crown was op- posed to this disposition of the case. He was asked to restore it to the list immediately and to hear it in the ordinary way. But behind the request was the blunt assertion that if he dces not proceed in this way, consideration will be given to man- damus proceedings to compel him | to do so. | "The charges involve serious of- | fenses and must be tried in the civil | courts in the ordinary way," sald Mr. Conant, when asked about the case. "If the magistrate's disposi- tion of the case were left unchal- { lenged it would establish a very bad | precedent and might embarrass au- thorities in other parts of the Prov- | ince where there are large military | encampments. "It would be very bad for law en- | forcement if members of the CA. A. Langley, K.C, on Tuesday acquitted Stuart Graham, of Lakefield, on a charge of breaking and entering the home of Mrs. Cecilia Fleming, also of Lakefield, with intent to commit an indictable offence. Chief Constable W. Hendren, of Lakefield, stated that on investigat- ing a burglary at Mrs. Fleming's house he had found an overcoat and a half-empty bottle of whisky on the premises, and that he had ar- rested Graham after making inquir. ies as to the ownership of these articles. The officer added that Graham | had made a statement to him about the affair, but this was held by the mazisirate to be inadmissible. | in the) civil courts of Aircraftsman Harold | Attorney-General Conant in a | Evidence was given by Theodore: | Crawford that he had sold Graham a coat similar to that produced in | court, Somewhat similar was the testi- mony of an official from the Liquor Control Board store, who stated that while the accused's permit showed that he had purchased a bottle of whisky of the brand found by Chief Hendren in Mrs. Fleming's house, these was no way of saying that the ladles' fall and winter coats. When you arise in the morning do a few bending exercises slowly such as trving te touch the toes, knees straight, or simple tighten and relax your abdominal muscles 10 to 20 times. . Port Hope To Enforce Parking Regulations. Port Hope, Nov. 14--BEmphasizing that traffic by-laws must be obeyed, and parking regulations in partieu- lar, Council at fits regular meeting here authorized the police to levy a fine of one dollar upon violators of 2 parking by-laws. The fine is levied on the first offense, and may be settled out of court. It was pointed out that the Coun- cil is concerned with enforcing the traffic by-laws, and not in raising money by fining offenders. The fine is therefore nominal for the first offense. New signs have been erect- ed to designate the areas forbidden for purposes of parking, and 'With the areas plainly marked, the Coun- cil feel that there should be no ex- cuse for violation of the regulations. Woodstock, Ontario, was in the limelight, not only locally but of the whole Reginald Birchall was hanged for the brutal murder of his fellow Englishman, F. C. Benwell, The story of the crime and of the trial was told in this column in September, and It was noted that the case was a world sensation. That interest continued to the last moment of Birrnall's life. People country around in the hope of see- ing something even outside the walls of the county jail; boys, and some men, climbed trees and tele- graph poles and clambered on ad- jacent roofs in the hope of getting just a glimpse. But of course, they saw nothing. The execution was "private", at least officially, There were only a score or so reporters and a number of local folk who had "pull" and were able to get tickets of admis- sion. But they saw little. Birchall walked to the scaffold with a firm English-speaking | world, for it was the day when J. Karn's Drug Store FOR PROMPT DELIVERY Phone 78-79 NEXT P.
