S. Ebbs in| of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. A charge of intoxication was also set over to the same date. Otis Campbell, charged with in- remand when Chief Constable J. W. Vasselesky, who was arrested in the vicinity a short time later, was charged with the assault. JIMMY O'HARA INJURED IN AUTOMOBILE CRASH Baltimore, Sept. p6. -- James F. O'Hara Jr., 35, part owner of the Bowle Race Track and prominent in racing circles, was injured seri- ously last night in a collision be- tween his automobile and a trolley. At the hospital where O'Hara was taken, physicians said he suffered broken ribs, facial lacerations and a possible broken nose and wrist. Children Taught To Sing Again Away From Air Raid Terrors (Continued from Page 6) centration centres, could not return under the new Spanish government. Were they to return they would not only be punished but would be ob- liged to give up their cultural ideals. We decided to remain with them in France and continue just as we had begun in Spain. Work continued for the Spanish children in France from February to September 1939. During this time additional children were taken from the concentration cen- tres into the sanctuaries just as quickly as support could be found for them. War In Europe In September, 1939, war broke out in Europe. The gates of our sanc- tuaries were then opened to all chil- dren in France who might suffer as a result of the war. Soon children of many nationalities came in -- Polish, Belgian, Dutch and children from Northern France. These gates were to know no nationality bounds. It was now necessary to have more than just a Spanish staff. A staff of refugees willingly came to Lelp. They too, were victims of war and persecution and had come to France as a haven. Teachers, doc- tors, nurses, artists and domestic workers. All happy to be of service to the children in exchange for bed and board for themselves. Each group of children had a staff speak- ing the language common to that group of children. We then were confronted with the religious ques- tion. It was a simple one to answer. Each child was to attend the ser- vices of his own faith in the neigh- borhood. Later it became more prac- tical to have all the different ser- vices held at the colonies, Keep Holidays Traditional holidays were observed by each group, but all groups par- took of them. Large trucks were sent around to collect the children to join the celebrations. Most celebra- tions were held at the main house in Biarritz. With great joy all the children watched the Spanish child- ren dance and heard the Polish chil- dren sing their songs. At the height of activities, when all houses had been fully equipped and things were going well -- the German invasion of France began. Our work could not go on. Biarritz and the vicinity came under Ger- man domination. Food and cloth- ing for the children would still be welcome, but the cultural life must be forgotten. No longer would the children be permitted to sing their folk songs. If we were to continue it was to be with a guard of Ger- man soldiers around our open gates. For this reason work in France was given up. Seek English Ald Realizing that Biarritz was a port city and would be taken over by the Germans, our staff cabled to Eng- land while there was still time. "Would they give sanctuary to the children?" It was a hazardous trip across the Channel. Refugees by the thousands were fleeing France. Ail boarded boats under gunfire and bombardments. Many boats were sunk. Somehow, the same Provi- dence that guided us across the bor- der into France guided the boats with our children and staff to Eng- land. None of the children or adults who left France were lost. All ar- rived in England safely. There had been time for only very few arrangements to be made. It took many days before the distress- ed, war torn group found each other, as all had not been able to take the same boat. For a while they were sheltered in Canterberry Hall, Cart- wright Gardens in London, until & permanent place could be found. After a few days, with the co-opera- tion of the London County Council, British Women's Volunteer Servics and the International Commision, new sanctuaries were found. An old estate known as the Woodberry Down estates, situated in a suburb of London, was taken over. 8.0.8. to America Cables arrived in America again. Beds, blankets, pots, pans, dishes, medical supplies and clothing were needed again. All could be purchas- ed in England if the funds could be raised. The warm response from Americans was unfailing and the money was cabled within a few days. The gates of the sanctuaries swing wide again, open to all chil- dren in Englard who fled their homelands to escape war and per- secution -- Polish, Spanish, Dutch, Belgian, French and now British children. For the third time in the short history of the Foster Parents' Plan great pots steam in large old kitch- ens, rows of dishes line kitchea walls. Dormitories with two and three deck beds have warm cover- lets. School rooms have benches and desks again. As the war continues these will be needed in ever increas ing numbers. Children Sing Again You can once again hear the chil dren sing. Yes, you can hear thems daily and many times during the night when all are welcomed by mir raid alarms. The children go on une daunted clinging to their songs de~ termined that they shall not become | echoes. All eyes turn to America, it is only America that can help now. If you could but see these trusting eyes you would not fail them. STRANGER THAN-- Winnipeg, Sept. 26.--Prairie golf- ers have doffed their hats to C. J. Scott, latest member of the hole-in- one fraternity. It was just a 120-yard hele but... Scott has just one leg, plays on crutches and uses a one-handed swing.
