William P. Mulock, as postmaster- general, but he does not envy him the job. Sir William, interviewed yester- day at a summer resort near To- ronto, recalled his own term as postmaster-general in the Laurier Government from 1896 to 1905. He said he might have & job for his grandson. "I 'want him to look up a gift that was misplaced years ago. DODGE Pontiac, Mich, July 10 -- Mrs, Annie Laurine McDonald Dodge, $15-a-week switchboard operator of Gore Bay, Ont., before she met and married Daniel C. Dodge, heir to a motors fortune, will receive ap- proximately $2,500000 under a set- tlement of his estate. The agreement, approved by Pro- bate Judge Arthur E. Moore, of Oak. land County, settled all the 22-year- old widow's claims to the estate of young Dodge, who died 13 days af- ter they were married in August, 1938. Injured in a dynamite ex- plosion at his lodge on Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, Dodge fell from a motorboat which was carrying him to a hospital at Little Current, Ont., and drowned. Daniel Dodge's will, leaving his widow only a sum of $250,000 pro- vided in a pre-nuptial agreement and the Manitoulin Island Lodge, was contested. Today's settlement wrote an end to nearly two years of litigation. Dodge's estate was estimated at about $11,000,000, representing ac- cumulated income from a $40,000,- 000 trust fund set up by the late automobile magnate John P. Dodge for four of his children. Today's settlement provides that five per cent. of this estate be re- turned to the principal of the trust fund; that 47'. per cent. be divided among Daniel's three sisters -- Mrs, Wesson Seyburn, Mrs. Johnson; and that 47!2 per cent. be divided, three- fourths to Daniel's mother, Mrs. Mathilda R. Wilson who is the wid. ow of John F. Decdge, and one- fourth to Mrs. Daniel Dodge, her share under a Michigan law. Thus the young Canadian girl will receive from this. after federal and state tax are deducted, ap- proximately $1,070,000. In lieu of whetaver claims she might make 'op ber hushand's share of the trust Mrs. Daniel Dodge will receive a cash payment of $1.« 750.000, paid bv Daniel's three sis- 'ers. The agreement further pro- vides that her widow's allowance be Increased from $5000 to $7.500 monthly ard be made to cover a ~eriod of two years, the $189.000 thus renre<ented bhrineing her total inheritance to $2.500,000. Another suit involving the Dodge fortune still is pending In Wayne Coun'y (Detroit) Circuit Court, John Duval Dodge disinnerited son of John F. Dodge, is seeking to set acide his father's will and gain a $13,000,000 share of the elder Dodge's estate. | Had No Chae to Show Stuff in Ethiopian War-- Like Army and Airmen London, July 10. -- Informed sources assert that a desire of the Italian navy to achieve "glory" com- parable to that gained by Italy's army and er force in Ethiopia and Spain was a factor in Italian en- trance into the war. . They said the na'y had shown a definitely "pro-war" sititude for some time. These scurces said they believed Italy would be unable "at present" to replace submarines at the rate British forces are sinking them which is estimated generally to ex- ceed the rate of destruction of German submarines. They estimated 60 per cent. of all Italian naval personnel had been conscripted. These sources said the new 35,000-ton battleships Vittorio, Veneto and Littorio "prabably" had completed their trials," but suggest- ed that Italy might "prefer" to keep them out of action in the immediate future. The same sources estimated Italy's battleship strength at five ships, including the Vittoria, Veneto, the. Littorio and three 27,000-ton ves- sels which havé been reconstructed. They recalled that the Italian naval under-secretary, in a state- ment a month ago, had said that construction of two new cruisers was being delayed "in favor" of new destroyers and submarines. This action was interpreted her? as due to @ shortage of material. Italian ships are equipped with modern gunnery control and "there is no reason to suppose their firing would not be effective," it was stated. Italian naval morale was de- scribed as "undoubtedly higher" now then a few years ago. "Fascism," these sources "probably of the fighting service in a country like that"! While the Italian -air force and army returned hom» from Ethiopia and Spain "covered with medals and glory," the i hes had no chance to show worth, it was explained, and iy added to Italian dislike of British naval dominance in the Mediter- ranect), probably has fostered a more warlike feeling in the navy than in the other branches, sald improves the discipline, (EDR. TORUN FOR 3RD TERM EXPERTS AGREE Bankhead, Byrnes and Barkley Appear as Lead- ing Candidates Chicago, July 11 -- President Roosevelt well be a third-term can. didate, according to the best infor- mation available to political experts here to-day, five days before the Democratic national * convention meets to name a ticket. : Speaker William B, Bankhead. Alabama, is believed to have rall position in the contest for vice-pres- idential nomination, the only con- test of the convention. Sen. James F. Byrnes, South Carolina, and Sen. Alben W. Barkley, Kentucky, who will be permanent convention chair. men, are in the running. If this is to be a third-term cam- paign year, the political combination of Roosevelt-Garner-Farley which triumphed in 1932-36 is disrupted. Garner, a bitter and frequent critic of many New Deal policies, has opened Sherman Hotel headquar- ters, to seek the presidentiol nom- ination. Hint Farley Out James Farley arrived yesterday s'ill guarding the secrets imparted to him on Sunday at Hvde Park by Mr. Roosevelt. Farley's name will he nlaced in nomination for Presi. dent, and shortly afier the conven- tion he plans to retire from the cabinet and from chairmanship of the national committee to take over the New York Yankees and olher business interests. Ahout the only thing which eouvld keep Farley in politics would be nomination ¢f Cordell Hull for pres. ident snd himself far vice-president, a combination for which he cum- naigned cautiously until he and others became convinced some weeks 270 that Mr. Roosevelt would run again. Whether Farley changed his mind about that since Sunday has not besn revealed. Stratezcy May Hit Back Scme political veterent believe | Mr, Rozs2velt may have embarrassed himeelf somewhat bv the situa'ion now established within the Demo- cratic party. His silence torpedred other candidates, Some of them, in. cluding Farley, Sen. Burton K. Wheeler, of Montana, and Federal Securi'y Administrator Pavl V. Me- Nutt have said as much in public or private, M-~st other aspirants having been engulfed bv the Roosevelt mystery, some practicel Mr. Recsevelt is in a position in which he must accept a third term nomination because of the difficulty of building up some other candidate to adequate presidential nronortions. Some nersons holding this view sug- ~est that Mr. Roosevel: might like to retira now but mey find himeelf unable to do so because of his own strategy. The possibility that he will advise the conventicn that he does not de- sire renomination and still submit to a draft of delegates uncertain where else to turn, is a facthr in all speculation here regarding next week's developments.
