PAGE TWO ~ o THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1932 GAY WRAPPINGS ADD GLAMOR TO CHRISTMAS GIFTS First Appearance of Pack- ages as Important as Presents Half the fun of Christmas lies in the zest of opening gayly dec- orated packages that are go in- viting you just can't wait to get your fingers on them. This year the wrappings, rib- bons, stickers, tags, boxes and . other package businesses run . such a riot of color and' variety "that, with an early selection you can make your Christmas gifts the most attractive of the lot. Old-Fashioned A ere New papers have definite old- fashioned atmosphere to their ' designs. Hand-blocked effects are ; the last word in Christmas wrap- pings. It may be a fine print, like . a pretty, gay red calico, made of | * minute Scotties, but the effect will | * blocks, sometimes with | | be hand-blocked. It may be sil- houetted figures, Victorian in flav- + or, but they too are designed in silvery , and black waving lines and | stripes for a border. Then there | are the blocked designs which use all the traditional Christmas | things, lined off in squares, Christmas trees, Santa Claus, holly wreaths, Yuletide candles, and so forth. A darling little paper of this blocked sort has sapphire blue figures against silver with white broken stripes between, featur- ' f+ Ing a formalized little tree in one square, alternating with Santa 5 b | | mas green and white, A { Christmas gift wrapping. Claus, a wee figure tripping along ! » in his sleeping togs, and a de- mure little lass curtsying. Embossed papers are in high favor this year, rather conserva- tive in color, favoring the Christ- ! or old- + fashioned hollyberry red. These ' features have blocked designs, {| too, one of them being an old- ! English coach in squares, with : holly wreaths in between, and | pine cones. } Two Main Colors There are fewer red, green and , white papers than formerly. All seem to prefer two main colors f and use gold or silver, just to | give more glamor. One new pa- '| per uses russet colored red with an apricot tan, the color combin- | ation the Prince of Wales report- ! edly is using this year in his This , paper has a formalized Victorian , design, a church in one square, | three Christmas trees in another, ! and a quaint figure of an old- , fashioned man in tall hat and sideburns leading two hoop- ' skirted ladies along. There are many quaint little calico designed papers. Perhaps the prettiest of all are those that ! use diminutive shapes of snow- t flakes to spot the solid red, blue | or other colored back. t Don't Spare Paper ¢ If you are giving some bulky thing that is hard to tie up, don't . be stingy with your paper. Use a |. whole big roll cf it, gathey all the | ends together at the top, slash \' them to make fringe and sprinkle | stars over the whole thing. i. If you are givinz jams or jel- i, lies or other home-made delica- cies, you can tie them up to look br like little flower pots, with tricky candy trees made of gummieg on top of them for bowers. If you get your wrappings early enough i to get a good selection and take I your time to it, the littlest gad- zet that yon send may take on + such attractiveness that it ends t up by being one of the nicest E gifts received. Remember, first appearances of ¢ your Christmas gifts are just as important as the gifts themselves. Christmas in Ireland For the visitor there are two I% ways of spending Christmas in Ireland --- alone or as one of a crowd, Anyone in search of a rest can find a beach, a lake or ' 2 mountain valley to which he will be the only visitor. Put he will not be lonely for, in Ireland, the solitary stranger, if e>mpan- fonable, is adopted by the peo- { rle and made free of their pleas- | ant society at once. For those {.who prefer to be in the midst of ! typical Christmas enjoyment in fthe best modern hotel spirit, * Bundoran in Donegal, Pun loag- # haire (Kingston) 'in Dublin, . Rosslare Harbor in Wexford, | Glengarift in Cork, Killarney in § Kerry, are some of the places 4 where there is plenty of life and Smovement at Christmas with [8 zolf, hunting and fine walking [country at the door. 5 A visit to one of the Islandg of Ireland at Christmas is a de- light as yet too little known. You Scan travel in an easy way from Dublin. to Achill and across the fibridge to the island in the At- [Wantic. In that little island, 16 hy 11 miles, there are cliffs, mountains and silver sand heaches unspoiled by any artifi- fality. There are half a dozen omfortable little hotels surprise ngly modern in such an old- 9 the poet sang. All you need are a raincoat and a pair of stout boots as a life preserver against the drizzle. That ocra- sional drizzle keeps Ireland the "Emerald Isle." It Is worth while going '0 Con® nemara or Glengariff, or indeed anywhere in Ireland, for a glimpse of that vivid green in which the land shines 'at Christ- mas. Judging by the landscape, it might be spring there all the time. Only for the shortened day you could hardly te'l the sea- son. Best of all there is little or no fog in Ireland. On the Kerry coast there are oniy seven foggy dayg in the year. The absence of frost makes hunting possible every day, and the sport costs only half as. much as elsewhere. At Christmas, above all, Ireland is the happy hunting ground. In the "real" Irish parts oi the country, where the ancient lane guage is still spoken along with English, that is in Donegal, parts of Connemara, Kerry and white-washed farmhouses, Cork, and in a few other places. one will see the old setting for Christmas unchanged. On Christmas night a lighted candle will burn in every window of fhe The farmers' children will be trying to count how many candlelights they can see from their own home. A larger candle will he set in a sod of turf or turnip for holder. This will be the Christmas candle to burn every night until the New Year. Cuns and saucers will be laid upon the table, between meals for wander- ing souls from purgatory who may visit their old homes, All of this older life of Ire- land co-existing in the mids: of and with the mew modern life, is one of 'the delightful discov eries for the Christmas visitor who moves a little out of beaten tracks.
