NOISE ANNOYING ONLY WHEN LOUD Experts Finds Efficiency Unimpaired on Sound Especially Musical London, -- Ingenioys experiments which have been conducted to test the effect of noise upon daily work show that human efficiency is dis- 4urbed by noise less than is com- monly supposed. More than 80 Cambridge undergraduates were re- quired to carry out manual and mental tasks under conditions of varying degrees of noise, compared with conditions of silence. The investigators find little evid- ence for the wide-spread opinion that noise directly diminished effi- ciency, All they can find is that noise tends to be disliked, particu- larly by people vio are not very much med to it. Only undergraduate believed one kinds of work easier; the others said that, while it made the condi tions of work more pleasant, it also made concentrated mental effort lifficult. . Two conclusions were regarded as established--"Loud noise is in gen- eral prejudicial to sfciency, and its harmfulness is roughly proportional to the difficulty of the work involv- ed. Nevertheless, the psychological and physiological effects due direct- ly to noise have been, and constant. (89b) Shoe Repairing YOU WANT THE BEST IN SHOE repairing. Shoes called for and delivered.
